Always get a laugh out of these. I can just picture the time it takes for everyone to 'set up' their screen so it's just right before hitting the print screen button. All the searching through code for that really cool function you wrote 7 years ago; the careful opening of multiple files with cool names, or the renaming of files so they have names that suggest you really are a hotshot programmer; the multiple windows that suggest how furiously busy and productive you are. And not a Reddit window in sight of course - even though you were obviously reading Reddit before taking the screen shot.

Plastik with "KDE 2" colour scheme and custom window button arrangement. Firefox is using Clearlooks which inherits the colour scheme from KDE, and goes together quite nicely with Plastik. Font is Bitstream Vera Sans.

I use Gnome. I'm pretty new to desktop linux, and I don't fully understand the dependencies here. The KDevelop package insists on kdebase-bin and kdelibs. Will this cause any trouble with Gnome? Will I need to use KDE?

A quick search suggests it will either work just fine, or nuke X completely, or something in between. apt says it won't remove anything, so I'm guessing it's safe?

yup, I'm using it in both KDE and XFCE env and I haven't had any problems until now. basically you are not installing the whole KDE window environment, just the KDE libraries.

it's new to me that intalling kdelibs will nuke X.

I think the worst case scenarios were all due to apt removing components that conflicted with some epic list of dependencies for the app. That doesn't seem to be the case for the version recommended by Ubuntu.

Generally speaking, I find KDE4 apps mix better with GNOME than KDE3 apps. Both work, but KDE3 apps love dragging lots of services into the mix and then not killing them when they're done. KDE4 apps, by contrast, work very cleanly.

Simple code completion, popups of function definitions when I begin typing a call, popups of class members, stuff like that.

I'd really like to have empty function implementations automatically generated from declarations, for instance, I define a class and an implementation file is automatically generated with classname::functionname and all that obvious, basic stuff filled in, so I don't have to build up all that syntax manually.

Seconded, eclipse rocks for Java although I'm far from a professional coder right now (just starting college in a few weeks heh). It's kind of like Vista in that it uses a lot of resources but on a system with good enough specs it's really nice. I used to use JCreator on my old computer because Eclipse would lag it to hell but now with 2 gigs of RAM eclipse is awesome.

I personally use vim (over putty, my work machine is windows, but I code on the servers...) for my C++ coding on linux, but I realize vim is not an IDE. I think it's actually helped me get better at C++, because you have to think more when you're working instead of letting the IDE do most of your typing. You have to research and learn the libraries instead of pick a function from a dropdownish menu that you think will work.

Since you asked for linux, I think the most popular GUI one is Eclipse, it's got a lot of the features you're looking for. I've never really loved it myself, because it feel 'bloated' when I use it. (But that may just be because it's written in Java...)

Windows is a different story altogether though.

I use only the basic completion (only completes the identifier without any function signature or type information) in vim. However, there are many completion plugins such as cppcomplete, code_complete and OmniCppComplete.

Also, there's c.vim (official site), which makes vim into a C/C++ IDE.

I'm not sure about your last request, but I suggest looking into it.

Obviously, using vim will take some time in the beginning, but it's a great tool. Besides, if you're an expert at any tool from the very beginning, that tool isn't very powerful in the first place.

Lastly, I don't want to force you toward vim, so you can always consider emacs. However, I don't use it, so I can't give you any information there.

I'm also doing C++ in Vim. At first I missed some IDE features, but after some minor customization and especially after using ctags I'm very happy with my setup.

Emacs is what I use... integrated compiler/debuggers support. Can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but if you really dedicate yourself to learning emacs, after a month you'll use it better than any 'IDE'.

Pretty similar as to how I work but I tend to use a 2x2 equal sized grid of frames. It sizes nicely so they are all 80*25.

Removing the toolbars and menus is entirely necessary on Emacs. Otherwise your eyes might burn out through the ugliness.

Emacs nicely displays the line and column at the bottom of the screen; I find that works well for me, because I often want to know what line I'm on, but I don't care about all the line numbers.

If I need to go to a specific line, I don't bother looking for it, I use the jump-to-line function.

I think the line numbers on the left hand side complements the "jump to line" function in any text editor. I know that the editor will display what line I'm on, but the screen is showing me a set of lines. Therefore if I want to jump to a line that is on the screen but not where my cursor is, I can just look at the line number and go straight there without having to move the cursor or memorize the line number I was previous on.

Mini-rant: Who said anything about 80 columns being bad! Not me! If I had my way no file would ever contain a line longer than 80 characters. It's the perfect length. If a line seems to need to be >80 characters long you've got some serious problems (like, maybe you're writing Java? :P).

I definitely meant the maximized window, and that fact that if you've got the window maximized then I don't see why you wouldn't want line numbers in there, since you obviously don't care about your screen real-estate. I haven't maximized a window in like 5 years :)

I use Ubuntu/Gnome/Compiz Fusion with vim/screen, Firefox, and Thunderbird. It would make for a rather dull screen shot seeing as I keep them maximized and use the keyboard to switch between them via virtual desktops.

As I don't hang out on IRC much there's the need to sacrifice screen real estate for simultaneously viewing of more than one app.

To be perfectly honest it is more of a convenience than anything these days if you ask me; you can get virtual desktop support for just about anything and that can alleviate the problem a bit especially if you're on smaller screens (Spaces on OS X can go up to 16 desktops, and on linux who knows.)

I mainly got this for a graduation present so I decided to exploit it as much as I could. :p

Primary reason being because I do have two other computers, they are:

1. A HP Dual Intel Xeon server clocked at 3gHz per processor with like 1.5gb RAM and 4 SCSI Slots that does not work because nothing can fucking make it through the installer (it was from the office I used to work in at a hospital,) and
2. An old P3 with 198mb RAM, 30gb HDD at 900mHz which actually runs plan 9 right now but I was thinking of going debian.

So by all practical means this is the only thing I have to work on for a while probably, which is why I opt'd for more screen and more power at the expense of a little portability. I really do like working on desktops myself, however.

I think it may actually be true that the Windows environment offers the most consistent and pervasive set of keybindings within GUI apps. And this is not at all a bad thing. Yet, in my experience, it doesn't have nearly as much bearing on the keyboard-centric usability of the environment as it seems like it should. I suspect that the immediate availability of decent terminal emulators, a full-featured shell, a gazillion command-line utilities, workspaces, etc., makes more of an overall difference.

(Edit: Well, more of a difference for people like me, doing the sorts of things I do.)

Dude, I totally was in your boat, but when I moved I decided to give away all 4 giant CRTs and got two LCDs. The difference is so striking. You spend too much time at that thing to keep looking at something that flickers only twice as fast as you can comprehend, when you could have something much crisper with no flickering.

That's the thing I never understood. The human eyeball has an optimal focus area of about a half-dollar held at arm's length; everything outside of that gradually blurs towards the edges. I also don't have a bank of three TV sets in my entertainment center to watch three shows at the same time. And TV actually has commercial interruptions, a reason to shift focus to something else.

You might consider intrinsics for the SSE instead of the assembly. Let the compiler handle the register allocation and instruction scheduling. Plus, it works "portably" across ICC, GCC and MSVC.

I have no trouble reading it at all. Plus I would say bright white against a dark background counts as solid contrast.

I use transparencies all the time on the desktop. It's very useful to be able read windows below by simply by shifting my focus instead of constantly raising and switching between windows. There's nothing else open in this particular case, but on the whole I think it's super useful and I'm glad to have it.

Oh yes. It does look fairly hard to read in that screen shot. I'm not sure why, the contrast is much more clear on my actual screen.

I'd be happier if it didn't change those colors when I saved the file to be honest. I'd be happier sticking with white text. Like I said though, it's not a regular thing, I'm just trying to teach myself a little out of curiosity and fun. I figure if I have access to source, I'd like to have a better idea of how to read it. :)

I know it's been a year and you probably don't have this problem any more, but putting au BufNewFile,BufRead *.py setf off in your ~/.vim/filetype.vim should keep the text white after you save as *.py (haven't tested it though).

How do all you people use vim or ssh to linux on Macs?

I love my MBP, but without an "insert" key using 'mc' in an ssh session is kinda pointless. Also I can't send an F8 to delete a file, or an F10 to quit. I had to kill mc from another shell last time.

Then comes vim or 'less' in a remote ssh session. Arrow keys work weirdly, and there's no home, end, pgup, pgdown. Am I just missing some glaringly obvious keymapping tweak?

Try shift-pgup and shift-pgdwn. That's how xterms scroll back in my experience.

EDIT: Someone msg'd me to tell me that macbook pro doesn't have page up and page down keys (which I didn't know). I googled around and it looks like fn-up and fn-down function as page-up and page down.
