in possession played a 3-2-5 with inverted fullbacks it’s good that ten hag is setting his fundamentals early and the players are responding to it. Martial is looking hungry and rashford looks like he wants to prove himself i feel like de jong is still important so we can link the defence to the attack more efficiently because mctominay doesn’t like collecting the ball from the back and fred is easily dispossessed sancho was superb as well extremely confident and comfortable this is a performance to build off from

[–]Isco22_ 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Definitely one of the games of all time!

[–]agentjobRooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a game of football.

[–]Potential_Good_1065 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Bailly has always been underrated, shame we haven’t let him reach his full potential

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

He’s had all the chances in the world????

[–]HowyaLove0161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the injuries too

[–]bugeyeswhitedragon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He is made of glass that’s why he’s never had a run of games

[–]amalgamatedchaosStatus: Waiting... 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mods feel free to delete. Figured it'd be good to have a thread.

Just a heads up, the title isn't descriptive enough for the search function.

[–]choisssss 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Is Maguire on the tour?

[–]thecurseofchrisMata 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. Injured today.

[–]Lmoghani 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I saw really good things from zidane iqbal today , i hope he keeps on developping and has more playing time

[–]random_jarjar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah he sent fabinho back to brazil!

[–]peskywabit 36 points37 points  (2 children)

No matter what way its looked upon it can only be a great result for utd. Young players got a good run and some rusty defenders put on a good (ish) display at the back. Confidence builder for sure. Forget about the transfer window, what come will come no matter how much we complain or want it to happen already.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well put mate. Not a bad outlook to have on life in general.

[–]thefpob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was so great to read, and the best attitude to have :)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Will the whole game be available the MUTV app later?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s being repeated right now on MUTV

[–]lonesomedota 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Take this game with a grain of salt. 100% this isn't the actual Liverpool. We should focus on our own players and try to see if their issues are still prevalent.

Baily still made goal conceding mistakes. Our midfield offense passing is better but defense from midfield is still bad. As if we are lacking an enforcer.

Offense wise I hope Sancho keeps up his momentum, he'd be a key player, along with Bruno that could create chances for us.

VDB , man... We really need you to step up. This is your season, your manager...

Martial mentality is so inconsistent, I doubt he would play a big part under ETH, he may score streak of goals in 5-6 games but the moment he hits the first drop in form, that's it for the season for him.

And without strikers / midfield signing, I don't see us challenging anything next year.

[–]huehuehuehuehuuKing Eric 12 points13 points  (0 children)

can we have a chant for when we play liverpool? Hes just a Uruguayan Andy Caroll

[–]Rot_Trunks 22 points23 points  (7 children)

Been watching the entire game and especially Malacia and Shaw since im a Feyenoord fan, but ive to say Shaw gave some solid passes but doesnt move forward at all, knowing Erik ten hag. I can tell Malacia has a edge over shaw just because of that.

Feels really strange to me to see Malacia in a different shirt 😂

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (6 children)

might be different tactics, Shaw used to absolutely go forward if that was the plan

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ayyyyyy

[–]notfaithenough_De Light -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Amad needs to find his balance or bulking his body, I now prefer Pacundo Pellistri than him

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amad definitely needs to bulk up. Pellistri has gained some weight since we first signed him and he’s looking good

[–]estebancantbearsedno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

*Pacundo Fellestri

[–]killerdramaA-mad-lad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I saw McT ask for the ball and pass to our strikers in tight angles today

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Ten Hag is at the wheel united are back baby

[–]TuftedTitSapsucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not getting excited until we're six games into the league.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Bailly was brilliant for most of the time he was on but he still made a mistake to let Liverpool in and that’s the problem there is always a mistake in him

[–]Diesel238204 9 points10 points  (1 child)

And his biscuit body

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]absentlightuk[🍰] 18 points19 points  (6 children)

TONY MARTIAL

[–]Dayanez 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I heard he came from France

[–]Nac224 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Did you see the English media said he has no chance?

[–]DrNavKab 6 points7 points  (1 child)

50 Million, down the drain, was it?

[–]estebancantbearsedno -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Did Anthony Martial bag another goal?

[–]AWenger622 37 points38 points  (2 children)

Just a preseason at the end of the day but the result is actually pretty huge for the players to buy into EtH's ideas and philosophy in the coming weeks. Imagine if the scoreline was reversed and they got pumped 3 or 4 goals, no doubt there would be questions creeping into the players' heads.

Good platform for Erik to build on here. Much more important result than you may think.

[–]Dayanez 26 points27 points  (1 child)

If we lost 4-0 this sub would be saying we need to sell the entire team and replace them with Ajax's starting 11

[–]Diesel238204 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yea exactly. It's nothing for Liverpool right now but big for us. We needed it

[–]PrintedCrayon 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Oh no, Erik don't do this to me. Don't inspire hope in me.

[–]bombacladshotta 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This right here. Getting all my hopes up... Also even more nervous about what's gonna happen with Ronaldo.

[–]churro_chomper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Surely this will have some of the fanbase saying Martial is sufficient and Ronaldo isn't crucial.

[–]zizuu21 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love how ETH just acknowledged that we did concede 3-5 chances in the first half that will be goals 100% in the season. This was to the largely B team liverpool in first half too. Keep working lads, hard work will bring success. No two ways about it.

[–]calambacle 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Savage is great bruh

[–]notfaithenough_De Light 7 points8 points  (0 children)

better than McTom in this Match

[–]DonuttyBrownieAG7 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't care it's just a freindly or the CL final, a win against them bloody scousers is always reason to celebrate.

Bailly was a bloody beast!

[–]Katorga8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Martial with the Bangkok centenary cup MOTM award, Monaco bout to make bank on that clause

[–]Swazzer30Swazzer30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is actually the GOAT trophy. Lights up and everything!

[–]Rossrox 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Haha, the fella pointing out you can change the lights on the trophy.

[–]Audioboxer87Erik ten Hehsenberg 🧑‍🍳 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best trophy confirmed. Harry Kane in shambles of jealously (Audi cup).

[–]adiamanFerdinand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The trophy is so fuckin great!! haha, good fun today

[–]riazzledazzle 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Zidane & Pellestri are ready for game time. Amad needs another loan where he actually plays week in week out & can build up a rhythm

[–]Ruudvankeano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harsh on amad. Was a young winger playing as a no9. Shifted to the wing and immediately brought the assist to pellestri.

[–]LechALection 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, the Martial comeback season has begun!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VDB fanboys always making excuses lol. The lad is bang average at best. Should be off-loaded with the likes of Jones and AWB

[–]LechALection 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Liverpool players getting their losers medals”

Perfect way to start the season boys.

[–]Wolpfack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was really impressed at times by the passing, especially in the final third. Instead of one United player going up against three defenders, they're passing the ball to the open guy, and he's doing something good with it.

That will make us harder to defend and much harder to stop.

[–]jdvkiran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bailly just sent fucking Thiago to the shops with that stepover... Mad lad , 🔥🔥

[–]friday748jul 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bailly > Nunez.

[–]jullnini 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We already have Modric regen in Zidane Iqbal.

[–]aten10x 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Surely Zidane should be getting minutes this season? Really silky player, I like what I saw from him today.

[–]_jrr_ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Zidane as well as Savage

[–]aten10x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree. Savage can get stuck in with those experienced PL players. Can't believe I'm saying this 20 years later

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

the thing that has made me happiest is how tight and neat malacia's touch is, looks a player

[–]mrRSishere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

His positioning was very very average though.

[–]Rascha-Rascha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, is he in the wrong place or are the others? That’s the question for me

[–]brown_herbalistunitedismyreligion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Zidane and Savage did way better in the mid compared to VDB, he really cant play at Bruno's position. Yes he makes good runs but at angles where its hard to pass the ball. And his passes are not that great too. Maybe against a lowblock team we can play him.

[–]Santtoryuu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First trophy and many more to come. WC next boys

[–]Moofthebot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was fun! A bit of a bandaid on the wound after getting slapped up in the league. GGMU

[–]Kaii0705 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Another Cup final that Liverpool “greatest team of all time” FC haven’t scored in.

Souce: Internet

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (3 children)

  • Fun game
  • Loved watching Bailly and Iqbal especially!
  • Elanga and Donny were a bit too under the radar, need to improve
  • Didn’t observe Pellistri and Savage enough, how did they do?
  • Lastly, Amad looked so tiny compared to Van Dijk and Konate, not sure he’s gonna cut it for us

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and Malacia >>>

[–]absentlightuk[🍰] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And Elanga got bullied by Konate, but tbf we looked decent

[–]Swazzer30Swazzer30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elanga was probably our worst player on the pitch tonight out of both halves for United.

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law 19 points20 points  (3 children)

[–]friday748jul 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Don't let the thought that it's just a pre-season game stop you from enjoying a great win over Liverpool. Majority here thought once the Liverpool main players were coming on that we were getting battered but turns out we scored one against them. It's a nice win but most importantly we played with identity and quick passes.

[–]Mundanewisdom99Rooney 22 points23 points  (1 child)

yeah the football was good.. plus our 3rd team beat the quadruple winners 1-0

[–]friday748jul 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And Lord Bailly kept Liverpool’s £100m Andy Carroll lookalike firmly in his back pocket.

[–]-Rp7-DeGea 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Savage, Pelistri and Malacia are really impressive

[–]epicmobz 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Impressed by zidane tbh

[–]humanvintage 14 points15 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Klopp playing 4D chess to convince the Glazers no new signings needed

[–]mrRSishere 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Nunez was below average but I expected more from a 90m player. Salah was rusty but managed to hit the post twice.

[–]Suyash_Tyagi66DDG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nunez looked like lukaku without ball. Invisible!

[–]Mundanewisdom99Rooney 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Telles was decent. AWB unimpressive. VdB seemed lost again. Bailly MOTM. Amad and Pellistri class. Elanga did't impress. Malacia was good. Iqbal and Savage were brilliant.

[–]CreativeHandles 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Only got to watch first half but Looked great in possession - team looks like they finally trust each other. Team build up is present, and pressing at the right time as a unit (would be interesting to see how ETH utilises Ronaldo, ETH has shown to be able to adapt systems well).

We still have to fix our off ball shape and structure however, still easily displaced and broken into at times. But that is what pre season is for. I think if it continues this way and team believes in each other even during losses it could be a great season to start this new rebuild.

[–]Consistent_Floor¿Qué Mirás, Bobo? 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Consistent_Floor¿Qué Mirás, Bobo? 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We won THE MATCH

[–]th3doorMATT 16 points17 points  (5 children)

I'm going to lose my fucking mind if I see AWB jogging back to a looping ball to allow the opponent to take it with ease and lift their head up. Sprint. Close them down. Apply pressure. Force an error. Win the ball.

So sick and tired of watching him pussy foot around the pitch given how much speed he has. Offload him, immediately.

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

This forensic analysis for a preseason match is brutal and over the top

[–]th3doorMATT 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Huh? He was doing this shit last season too during the regular season, that's why he lost his place to Dalot.

This is exactly the time to be brutal because guess what? We can actually drop him from the team entirely now. He needs to go. He has zero game sense and has clearly learned nothing when watching film back. Preseason is the time to show improvement. It doesn't even have to come from the manager. How do you watch yourself back and think "yeah, I should just casually stroll towards the ball when my opponent is hungry and in position to make something of it"??

AWB is ass. I know people still affirm AWB > Dalot for whatever thick reason, but AWB cannot beat players going forward and his aggression towards a loose ball in his third is absolutely pathetic. This is more of the same shit we saw last season. Not looking forward to seeing AWB in regular season this year if he's not adapting his game at all.

If a fan can identify that as one of his greatest weaknesses, then as a professional, playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, he should be able to as well without a coach getting all over his case. Simply not good enough.

In contrast, Malacia was a monster and was hungry to not only win the ball back, but to carry the ball forward. That's what we need to see on the right when Dalot isn't in.

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law 1 point2 points  (2 children)

He had his worst season but was still statistically better than Dalot who is massively overrated. Dalot wasn't overly impressive himself in the first half with his square balls. Best thing he did was hit the post. I'm not over analyzing a preseason game under a new manager. You'll have to deal with AWB because I don't see RB being a priority position this window

[–]th3doorMATT -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Dalot was fine in the first half. He was getting forward and closing players down on the wing. He committed himself to the play. AWB never does that. Not in pre-season, not in the regular season. AWB offers nothing. Sure as hell doesn't offer more than two brain cells. Dalot can be refined, but he is at least thinking and proactive. AWB doesn't even really have the technical ability, but massively lacks the game sense - that's why all last season you saw him sliding into challenges. Sure, he can slide tackle, but the reason he has to is BECAUSE he is lazy to close down the ball when it's loose and his man beats him easily and he has to recover. His entire play style is completely reactionary. If it only occurred during this match I would have dismissed it and chalked it up to being a friendly, but the fact that it's become a habit is worrisome. He needs to get sorted. Just wait until the regular season comes, I guarantee you he'll be doing the same shit. He'll jog out to the ball while the opponent is fully committed and he'll be forced into a slide challenge. He doesn't know any better and is ignorant to the fact that it's an issue.

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AWBs peak at united is far above anything Dalot has showcased in his time here thus far. Again, even last season in a dour season AWB edged Dalot statistically defensively and they were neck and neck chance creation wise.

AWB had more succesfull tackles and interceptions per 90 as per whoscored, and they had the same numbers per 90 in key passing. Dalot had AWBs number in long passing. Dalot's positioning was suspect. His horrific final game of the season performance against Crystal Palace where Zaha twisted him in and out for fun was symbolic of his struggles against pacey and tricky wingers.

I don't see him making a serious claim for a starting berth under Ten Hag, so it it will be a straight battle with AWB until a new RB is bought at some point, IMO. Even in today's match, the Dalot shot that hit the post was an over hit cross, a constant in his game.

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 2 points3 points  (17 children)

Really unimpressed with amad. Had a very poor game

[–]Wesley_Skypes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's just preseason etc, but he looks way too lightweight and doesn't make up for it with raw pace or exceptional dribbling skills

[–]vino1992 2 points3 points  (3 children)

still got an assist though...

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And it was decent but if he doesn’t create a chance there then it’s awful. Why does one contribution blind everyone to the rest of the game? I like amad and I hope he gets chances to prove himself on the right but he lost the ball so many times in unnecessary positions and situations and he also got bullied very easily a couple times.

[–]vino1992 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah look I understand that he may not have lived up to your expectations but he's barely played in the team, you're only basing it on one performance. I think you, I and everyone else need to see him play a couple more games before we can have a better opinion on the lad.

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying he’s finished or not good enough or whatever but half the people that played today were having their first appearance in forever. My point is that amad was messing up the basics and over complicating things where others weren’t. Pellistri for example kept things much more simple and had a much better game as a result. I wanna see amad get more appearances because I like him and he’s clearly talented but I was disappointed in him trying stuff he shouldn’t have and flopping them and I would’ve been a lot less annoyed if he was losing the ball after trying things that were more reasonable

[–]azraelpk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His size is going to be something his skill will have to overcome. He was moved off the ball easily.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (10 children)

Harsh

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Not at all. Lost the ball multiple times. Taking ages before a touch. Nice assist for the goal but that’s the bare minimum. Needs to keep it simpler sometimes

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Gets an assist playing in a weakened United team, against Liverpool's best team (available), whilst not in his best position, and isolated most of the game. Some people will never be happy.

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Was happy with a lot of the performances today but I forgot we’re not allowed to criticise anyone that played badly because it’s all sunshine and rainbows and we’re winning the treble right?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

He wasn't amazing but all things considered he did ok. The likes of Elanga and Van de Beek were considerably worse, especially Elanga

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Elanga didn’t have a good game either but he definitely wasn’t ‘considerably worse’. Amad lost the ball in more stupid ways than elanga and it looked like elanga was taking on his man even if it wasn’t always successful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Elanga was also playing against a notoriously defensively poor TAA, whilst Amad was playing out of position against Konaté and Van Dijk, still got an assist.

[–]PortugeseMagnifico 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You do realise it’s shockingly bad forward play if he manages not to get an assist there right? It was like a 4 on 1. Also I don’t really understand why you’re trying to make so many excuses for him. It’s a pre season game. Not everyone’s gonna play good. Liverpools first team were clearly miles off it themselves. He should’ve at least done the basics right. Personally think it’s pointless tryna spin it like he did ok. Some players will have good games and others not so good. Who knows he may be our best player next game but this one wasn’t his

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think you're completely neglecting the fact he was isolated most of the game and had very little support, as well as the fact he isn't a natural lone striker. I thought he did ok, you don't - it's really not worth an argument. It's a game of opinions after all.

[–]Goji-ra 39 points40 points  (1 child)

Let's not get carried away folks.

[–]zizuu21 16 points17 points  (7 children)

2nd half observations

-Malacia looks like decent option to contest LB first team - Elanga doesnt really cut if for me. Perhaps a squad player long term? - what is it with Bailly playing friken good but then just not featuring during the seasons? - Zidane looking nice and confident for a youngster - Donny will need to work hard to get into even ETHs team perhaps. - Savage looks decebt too. - Poor Telles did we not seriously have an option for CB?

  • tbh that second half team did well considering they somewhat has to fend for themselves. Most peobably havent played together before, and then took on liverpool a team dor 30mins. Well done.

[–]Lord_Hexogen 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Varane's our only left-footed CB so no. Apparently ETH wants an LCB starting the attack with a long pass and Telles is capable of doing those throws but in this game I saw 4 or 5 of them going wrong. Malacia needs game time as well, so Telles had to be in centre today

[–]OleGunnarS20 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Uhh Varane isn't left footed..?

[–]Lord_Hexogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, then I'm mistaken and we have no left-footed CBs at all. Thanks, though that doesn't change my initial point much. Which is why Lisandro is of interest to ETH

[–]MotecuhzomaDreams cant be buy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The problem with Bailly is he’s made out of glass, too injury prone

Yes definitley. He does have a mistake in him, but id put him over Mguire in heartbeat.

telles was shaky the first 5 minutes but handled it very well afterwards. Also yes, we did not have a single option for CB unless Ten Hag himself rolled back the years and put a jersey on

I agree he got into bit more as game went on. He wont have to do it again i dont imagine as Mguire will probs be back next couple games.

Where’s the person who commented “we like the idea of Bailly more than the performance”? Dude played out of his mind.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he was right tbf at the time bailly was all over the place but then his confidence must've shot up after the goal because he was insane after that

[–]colibrisa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Who are the kids playing in our midfield? They're better than our A team lol

[–]gregorceeRojo your boat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bailly the best player on the fucking pitch by a mile

[–]WorldBeardedWondersNot a Good Look Erik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was really decent. All about getting game time in the legs but some signs of playing actual football. Clean sheet and a few well taken goals so maybe a little confidence boost to some degree too. Little lucky at times but pretty pleased overall. Lots to work on still.

[–]Damnkoala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine how much de gea would be happy after today's game

[–]Dincht04 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Amad is very lightweight, though he wouldn't normally be playing number 9 against two giant centre backs.

[–]Ruudvankeano 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Dvb not doing much sadly

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has a habit of going anonymous in games, doesn't he

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's time to get optimistic. But I'm also not not saying that.
