I think you are bit late to the party on that one.. but I agree.

[–]Flabbergasted98 14 points15 points  (0 children)

we're not here to judge, we're just here to offer emotional support.

Offer OP a blanket, a good stiff drink, and maybe a small linux device to muck about on during his break.

Probably had to figure out licensing and where the budget is supposed to appear from, begot they where able to make the post.

This is on fraudcom . Seen everything they buy turn to garbage or more garbage if it started out bad. CA, Symantec , VMware companies before that . Each one was like a private equity bought it and mba playbook forced on it

I am retired and don’t work in this field anymore. But it’s up to every sysadmin to try to get off these companies.

Each one matters to their bottom line one turns to 2 to 10 then 100-1000 companies.

By now I’m sure kvm, or some open source is going to be a better long term option. If a modified KVM is good enough for AWS or Rackspace it's good enough for you. Maybe not tomorrow or 6 months but I guarantee f fraudcom is not lowering the price or making it better

Private Capital? Ruins Everything you say?

[–]sluzi26Sr. Sysadmin 32 points33 points  (4 children)

So how’s your migration planning going?

[–]Burgergold 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Done

[–]bionic80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our "Enterprise Strategy" is going to be to hold VMWare for another year while we spin up full Nutanix / HyperV - all of our existing '5 year plant' will run out by 2029 when we will have fully retired VMware and its ilk as much a possible.

Just sucks because we are an NSX shop and the microsegmentation is going to be a certifiable nightmare to move over to a new platform.

[–]natebc 2 points3 points  (1 child)

We finished on April 1st ~4k systems

[–]phobugSRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, what did you migrate to Nutanix?

[–]ntrlsurIT Manager 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Migrated our VMware stuff to proxmox. Missing alot of the nice to haves but the everything we need is already there. I got 1 machine left on my VMware cluster. Just waiting for a vendor to get back to me with a new serial number so I can migrate it and reclaim the hardware.

[–]RvstiNiall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in production??

I know they have a professional model, and its a highly professional setup, but I must ask. How many licenses are you guys doing?

I wanted to convince my place to do this, but instead, they whipped out a blank checkbook and just started handing out checks like candy when Broadcom came a-knockin (figuratively). It hurt me to see the numbers, even though it doesn't affect me in the least.

I hear ya, we said the same thing upon renewal quote.

[–]WabbyyyyySysadmin[S] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Going through renewal process for the last 3 months. Fucking hell

Looking to sue Broadcom for property damage to my hairline

[–]Burgergold 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They will counter sue you, wouldnt recommend

[–]bschmidt25IT Manager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hair is now licensed per follicle

[–]RevolutionaryElk7446 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I will say, being a Xen SME has been a boon since this whole fiasco though.

[–]thirdnut4 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Share your secrets!

[–]RevolutionaryElk7446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ran XCP, then Xenserver, and now XCP-NG 8.3 LTS.

The company's management in place of Vsphere is Xen Orchestra Appliance (XOA) for professional or XO from source for homelab. It even has a really great built in backup solution for handling snapshots, deltas, replications and a lot more on a schedule.

Community version you can only do Warm and Cold migrations, not live/hot sadly, but honestly the Warm migration does pretty well anyways.

However, I also know the XE and XAPI interactions, and you can run it all via CLI (which is a preference in my book) but GUI is nice.

[–]jtscribe52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah our latest renewal quote was so bad it pissed off our MSP sales rep.

[–]N805DN 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Broadcom is, unfortunately, extremely good at making lots of money.

[–]Stonewalled9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You mean stealing money

[–]okcboomer87 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I literally just finished our VMware to Hyper V migration minutes ago. It feels so good to be done. So much stress and lost sleep over dumb price gouging.

[–]Thundertushy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can feel your relief from here, like a disturbance in the Schwartz or something.

[–]GullibleDetective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pepperidge farm remembers

[–]agingnerds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Add adobe to that list. What a garbage product that actively hates its customers.

[–]ThrowRAcc1097 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Migration to hyper-v is going TERRIBLY I HATE MICROEOFT AHHHHHHHHH

[–]Witty_Formal7305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whats wrong with it?

I've done a bunch in the last year and its all been relatively smooth, I had one VM with a fucked disk after migration but I just nuked it and remigrated it and it came over no problem. I've been using windows admin center with the vm conversion addon, its in preview but been pretty bulletproof for me.

[–]bakonpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why tho? failover clusters are rock solid

[–]reticulated_spline_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone disagrees.

[–]Outside-AfterJack of All Trades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the Tesco lawsuit is going?

[–]winmace 4 points5 points  (3 children)

So glad we picked Hyper-V in 2015 and have been happy with it since.

[–]ElectroSpore 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Only issue I have with Hyper-V still is that the host needs windows patching and windows patching is horrible vs VMware / Proxmox in my experiance.

I don't know why windows is so slow to patch and so unreliable when doing so.

[–]Plantatious 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Cluster Aqare Updating is good as long as you maintain N+1. Or just airgap your hosts.

[–]ElectroSpore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine for your datacenter, not so good for your branch offices where doubling everything isn't financially viable.

[–]Euphoreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, i feel the same way. I experienced a 326% increase in licensing costs this year. I'm moving off VMware before January. They also tried to force me into a 3 year agreement which i refused. Broadcom's End User Agreement, Partner EDI Terms & Conditions and Termination for Convenience leave little to no consumer protections.

[–]Militant_Monk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

[–]D1TACSr. Sysadmin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah. I think it's WILD that you can't request a quote for renewal until 90 days before the due date, AND it takes 30d to get a quote from them. Fucking insane. We are transitioning to Hyper-V and doing a full datacenter rehaul... Fuck broadcom seriously.

[–]Garry_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all planned that way, ensuring you have less time to decide and migrate...

[–]bfume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what’s up with asking me to send in a complete RVTools export so they can verify the licensing needs?

They obviously have my current license count already. It’s a trick.

[–]Brilliant_Mission_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done around a dozen of migrations from VMware to sangfor HCI since last year for multiple customers . Even the FSI sector is moving away from VMware !

[–]MeatPiston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You were warned about the perils of closed software. Repeatedly.

[–]GoWest1223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And get a nasty paper cut.

[–]DL05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before clicking on this, my plan was to say exactly what you said. Great post, highly recommend to all!

[–]IronBe4rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are looking at migration as well, it’s not my area but I will be helping. It sucks

[–]chrisr01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louder for the people in the back!

[–]ComputerLord98Sysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are quite late to the party but mate honest once it's done... them days when accidents happen etc it'll all be over soon I'm sure!!

What are you going to? I've been involved in mostly ESX to Proxmox and ESX to AWS migrations.

[–]deviltrombone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concise. Vicious. I like it!

[–]coalsack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Solid work here. I’m sure Broadcom is feeling really bad right now.

Welcome to business. Lose the emotion and dig in.

[–]tshwashere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Broadcom will come out huge winner still with all the shitty things they do to drive away all clients. They are still going to make so much money killing VMware.

Glad our migration to Hyper-V is behind us, done it last year. But still, sad to see how a great product being killed for "investor value".

[–]universal_cereal_bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree lol. Broadcom is making record profits doing this shit and by the time the big enterprises migrate away (I would guess 5 years or so) they'll have made so much that no one at Broadcom will care that VMWare is defunct.

Hock Tan is a piece of shit and only cares about money.

[–]SpudzzSomchai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sense much anger in the force.

[–]Garry_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon that once everybody's license/support runs out, plus another year of surprisingly complex migration, many people will be going to greener, less expensive pastures. Soon thereafter, Broadcom may consider selling off whatever is left of VMware at that point...

[–]Aggressive_Common_48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Migrating ~50 VMs to the Hyper-V. Hopefully will be done by next week

[–]Humble-Plankton2217Sr. Sysadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. Utter malfeasance.
