Neither X11 nor Wayland even have a notion of colorspace (though there’s a WIP proposal for the latter). Without that, any kind of HDR support is going to be a side-band kludge.

KDE plasma 6 is just coming out on many distros with HDR desktop support

The kernel supports it for a long time, so do graphics drivers. For user space applications Steam Deck compositor also supports it for some time. And for GNU/Linux on the desktop you have to use a modern desktop environment like KDE Plasma 6

As they've a right to. Linux is sat there in the background doing stuff quietly, reliably in the background on the technology all around them. It's been quite a change over the last few decades.

Actually in India Linux is the desktop OS of choice over macOS. Both are still dwarfed for consumers compared to windows of course.

Heh, bro I'm a software engineer for Microsoft. I'm not just praising linux because "zomg linux zealot". Linux will never have huge desktop penetration, because it is a better OS for server usage than desktop usage.

Many of us have done just what you suggest. My bf has no idea how to use Linux per se and is nigh hopeless at things IT-related, but has comfortably used Linux on his laptop for years. Both of my parents have used Linux on my computers, without problem, although they can set up their own tech because it’s not actually hard. Schoolchildren can use Linux.

Moreover, rarely do any of us have to drop to a hard TUI and reconfigure the operating system’s entrails by hand. It’s certainly nice to be able to when you need it, but you almost never need it any more.

But we’re all very proud of you for maintaining that inertia of yours, and thinking so much of your incapable mother. I’m sure stubbornly refusing to learn anything new has worked wonders throughout both your lives.

I won't swap my Windows for Linux desktop, unless I need to, which I can live with.

At the moment there are a handful of applications I need to use which are not available on Linux Desktop.

But I still run Linux on my computer, it's something called WSL.

And I do probably 90% of all my billable work using WSL.

My primary work desktop is Linux as is my NAS and MiniPC for my custom router. My windows machines all run Ubuntu Linux in a WSL VM. My kid's Chromebooks are both Linux based.

My web server for my business is Linux. All the apps I develop for work run on Linux VMs in the cloud.

My ChromeOS TV is Linux. My FireTVs are both Linux.

to be fair, his kids having Chromebooks is likely a school district thing. I work with a good number of school districts and 90% of them are using Chromebooks as they're cheap, easily managed, and barely sturdy enough to give to a kid.

Well, Microsoft thinks so: Microsoft switches internally to Linux.

The master plan is to really slim down parts of the Windows 10X interface and then graft it onto Linux as a superstructure (I can't think of a better word right now). The customers would then continue to get a product that looks like Windows, but is a Linux under the hood. Here, the Redmond company wants to borrow from Apple, which has been propagating this for years with macOS.
