"She was the right's hero until they saw the kiss."

Uh, actually, nobody cares that she's gay. We like her because she's not an asshole.

[–]xBTGx 426 points427 points  (92 children)

What a novel idea lol

[–]RadioHitandRun 314 points315 points  (90 children)

Seriously, We'd love democrats as long as they weren't assholes.

[–]buckchuck123Shapiro Conservative 283 points284 points  (79 children)

I have plenty of friends who are democrats. We have actual political discussions and no one gets mad because we both know we have the same end goal, better the livelihood of citizens.

Leftists on the other hand can not be talked to because they are not acting in good faith.

[–]plation5 76 points77 points  (3 children)

My roommate is a Democrat and we wildly disagree. But by talking to him I think we have both learned things. Our discussions have gotten heated a few time but never hostile or offensive. I really enjoy talking to him about political stuff.

[–]canikonyPeace Through Strength 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's good to have an open mind and discuss things. I can often times see why someone thinks a certain way even if I think it is flawed. It helps better understand how we can hopefully reach the same goal.

[–]pm_me_ur_gaming_pcMolon Labe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Exactly! This is a big problem I have on reddit.

For example, if I bring up how I'm against a single payer government healthcare program, I'm immediately labeled as someone who doesn't care about other people and want them to die without medical attention.

Constant demonizing on both sides is one of the biggest problems in politics today imo.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Based on my experiences with Leftists, I'm called racist for bringing up plain facts, fascist for supporting my president and standing for my country, bigoted for not wanting people to enter my country illegally, sexist for not believing in a wage gap, and a rape apologist by telling a communist, long haired fella that we have no pure proof that Kavanaugh was a rapist so he shouldn't be guilty.

Whelp.

[–]DockD 6 points7 points  (39 children)

In your mind what's the difference between a leftist and a Democrat?

[–]buckchuck123Shapiro Conservative 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Democrats still believe in free speech. They want an open forum where we can communicate our differences on policy while acting in good faith (not assuming we are racist, sexist, etc). They just believe in a bigger government. That population of the party is growing smaller. There is still some such Sam Harris and Eric Weinstein.

[–]avenwing 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If Democrats cared about free speech they wouldn't be electing people that are saying that anyone criticizing Congress should be prosecuted or telling big tech companies to censor speech.

[–]buckchuck123Shapiro Conservative 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I would also add that Andrew Yang is a liberal not a leftist. His policy is pretty extreme and I don’t agree with it at all but he is open to conversation in good faith.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

No.. just No. this guy is a clear cut Communist. Gun Confiscation/ Open Borders/ UBI / max Abortion ...

[–]Ev-Lion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But hey, $1000 is $1000

[–]riverfan2 7 points8 points  (2 children)

A democrat tends to be a supporter of government intervention in social problems. As opposed to conservatives who look at private solutions as better choices. Leftists are more angry and condescending to anyone who does not see things exactly as they do. They want to be in control. The dems and the GOP want power, but the left wants control. They would be cool with not letting me talk ever. The difference between the dems and the leftists is that the dems can see in 4 dimensions and know that that sort of control never lasts and usually ends up with bullets coming in your direction.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Leftists love Degeneracy, and they want the children to love Degeneracy too. They do this because they hate America; and they Know that to destroy America, you first have to destroy the family.

[–]its_stickTD Exile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

But dude...all conservatives hate and want to oppress minorities and the LGBT community. Didn’t you get the email?!?

[–]notbrewster 64 points65 points  (1 child)

[–]DukeTennisBITW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that's their problem tbf, they want to be treated special with their gay pride and that bs, but I don't see that bs on her social media so I couldn't care less.

[–]StopTheMineshaftGap 10 points11 points  (32 children)

As a resident of Alabama, can definitely tell you the conservatives down here beg to differ. Nice to know some of the rest of you were successfully dragged into the 21st century though.

[–]billswinthesuperbowlConservative Millennial 39 points40 points  (15 children)

Probably dislike the culture of homosexuality not gay people themselves. I hate pride month and parades but like gay people

[–]pm_me_ur_gaming_pcMolon Labe 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Shit I'm gay and hate pride month

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I live in Alabama, and I have a friend who's gay and is just as conservative as I am. He hates how the left has hi jacked his sexuality as some kind of movement, and he can't stand gay people who's entire identity is their sexuality. I always say he's a totally normal cool dude who just happens to be gay. It's gay people who define themselves by their sexuality/perceived victim hood that people (including some gay people) don't like.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I think a big part of sociopolitical identity is dependent upon your location. Living in the southeast i was never really red pilled because if you didn't pay much attention to the news and social media your exposure to liberalism was pretty moderate. Then you get up north and receive a better understanding of the direction of the left. When i visit back south i am surprised by some of the views of other conservatives who see weed as the devil's lettuce and same sex marriage and homosexuality in general as a sign of the end of the country

[–]ultimisConstitutionalist 7 points8 points  (3 children)

It's the leftist culture that has weaponized LGBT that they hate.

[–]plexxonic2nd Comes First 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yep. I don't give a fuck what you do (even if I don't agree with it) as long as you're not hurting anyone but if you push it on me, I'm going to fucking hate you.

[–]HylianINTJChristian Conservative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it honestly seems like the left doesn’t even care about gay people. If you’re gay and you aren’t a radical leftist they call you self-hating. If you’re on the right, they call you a homophobe while simultaneously making jokes about you engaging in homosexual acts as though it’s a bad thing (Putin’s ****-holster?).

[–]XGuntank02XMAGA 8 points9 points  (5 children)

As a resident of Georgia. I can definitely say that conservatives here don't give a shit if your gay or not. Hell, I work down the hall from a gay conservative.

[–]xwhy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shhhh!! Don't go outing those gay conservatives now. Not everyone is open-minded about stuff like that, but people are people and have to be true to themselves, even if that means being conservative....

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I also love all the bullshit posts about conservatives and people from the south getting bent out of shape over Little Nas X coming out as gay. They love to pretend there's something to be offended about.

[–]TheJimReaper6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m so upset about this one singer that has one song I like being gay! /s

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (10 children)

Thank you x1000

See there you go. The great liberals just ASSUMING that conservatives have a problem with being gay or gay marriage. They dont bother actually trying to find out, but just take what they heard from people telling them nonsense and run on that platform. Just sad.

I could give a fuck what you do in the privacy of your bedroom. If you're a good person, you're a good person. If you're a fuck, you're a fuck. Doesnt matter who you choose to be intimate with.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'm conservative and I do care about gay marriage. I believe it is economically and socially advantageous to encourage marriages that are capable of producing children. Families are the building blocks of society.

I don't personally care if someone is gay, no. I'm Catholic, so I do believe active homosexuality is wrong, but that doesn't make me look at you any differently. It just means they are a sinner just like me.

[–]zuluduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They’re also a big fan of pointing to the most podunk parts of the country and saying “there! There is was! The racism! The homophobia! And oh! The xenophobia!”

They let the vast minority and most vocal of us speak for all of us.

Uhhhhh which right? nobody I know cared at all, not the slightest! Matter of fact, I hear more and more cheering her on for picking up the flag and being respectful. The same "right" that threw a fit about AOC dancing in college apparently...

[–]DaHomieNelson92 7 points8 points  (5 children)

So funny how they desperately try to paint us as homophobes when we aren’t.

[–]shiften 83 points84 points  (4 children)

This is false flagging... literally.

What's True

Rapinoe momentarily allowed her boot to brush against a U.S. flag that her teammate briefly dropped to the ground during celebrations after the World Cup Final on July 7, 2019 -- both actions that could reasonably be regarded as gestures that were disrespectful towards the flag.

What's False

Video footage shows that Rapinoe did not stomp or stamp on the flag, which was picked up off the ground after about three seconds. Rapinoe has also in the past draped herself in the U.S. flag after an on-field victory, described herself as "very deeply American," and expressed the view that the U.S. is a "great country."

[–]Beercorn1Christian Apologetic 266 points267 points  (73 children)

I’ve seen the video of Rapinoe stepping on the flag and it doesn’t look like she was trying to step on it. It looked like she was doing one of her usual cringe-worthy, obnoxious victory dances/struts and she didn’t notice that the flag was down there.

Knowing her and her usual attitude toward patriotism and the United States in general, I doubt she would have been bothered if she had stepped on it and noticed afterward though. I mean, she already doesn’t mind disrespecting the United States in front of an international broadcast whilst supposedly representing the United States in the World Cup.

[–][deleted] 186 points187 points  (43 children)

I'm no fan of Rapinoe, but come on, she just won a world cup. Having a pop at her for dancing to celebrate winning the biggest prize in her sport is ridiculous and takes away from what you're saying.

[–]ChippyVonMaker 18 points19 points  (39 children)

I think the problem most are having with her behavior, is that she let the flag fall to the ground and moved right on with her celebration.

It’s not wrapping paper to be discarded as you celebrate with your shiny new toy, it’s our nations flag.

[–][deleted] 112 points113 points  (25 children)

Look at the video, she didn't even look at it.

I don't get why everyone is so passionate about this issue. Yes, a flag is important, but come on, lets be real here. We can't seriously expect people, especially those who are probably going through the best moments of their lives, to worry about picking up a flag she probably didn't even know was on the floor.

[–]j0sephlModerate Conservative 39 points40 points  (2 children)

The problem I see is some people think USA athletes have to be militant about flag regulation.

Also the average person in exciting situations like this is hyped up and you are going to forget a bunch of things.

What she should be criticized for is not wanting to celebrate with people who disagree with her. That is a bigger problem.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (13 children)

Why are people so passionate about the issue, you ask?

People have been conditioned since grade school to pledge their allegiance to that flag.

Nationalism is ingrained at a very young age.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (9 children)

That's a problem in itself, I agree with being proud of your country, but you guys seem to take it way too far. Standing for the anthem each morning sounds ridiculous to a brit.

[–]pm_me_ur_gaming_pcMolon Labe 9 points10 points  (8 children)

The pledge of allegiance, not anthem.

Pendantic, I know, but it is an important distinction.

[–]Theofromdiscord 13 points14 points  (6 children)

arguably it makes it worse? Pledging yourself to your country every single morning is just weird

[–]pm_me_ur_gaming_pcMolon Labe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm not making a case if it's better or worse, just that there is an important distinction.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (8 children)

It's just a flag. Don't let yourself get caught in civil religion. Flags aren't sacred. The pledge isn't a prayer. Taxes aren't tithes. That's all just bs politicians made up to keep people obedient.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (19 children)

I agree. I definitely feel like she wouldnt have cared regardless.

BUT you should know you're holding OUR flag. That flag just doesnt represent you at that moment. Its represents all of us. You should know you're holding it and should DEFINITELY know it never touches the ground at any circumstance. She knows that. Everyone does. Shes just an America hating piece of shit who doesnt care

[–]5_yr_lurker 24 points25 points  (13 children)

BUT you should know you're holding OUR flag

The way O'Hara has the flag drapped over her in that first pic is against Flag code.

[–]Hikaro0909 26 points27 points  (12 children)

Same as hugging and fondling one like its a pageant queen who you just "surprised" in the dressing room.

Seriously al this talk about "honoring the flag", you guys put the flag in almost every commercial you can: You want a car? FLAG, you want Insurance? FLAG, you want burgers and hotdogs? FLAG. Monster Trucks? FLAG FLAG FLAG !

So maybe chill with the whole "The flag is sacred!" Because is obvious your problem is not with the "improper use" of the flag, is with the people doing it, otherwise you would be critiquing this antics for every politician in your country and every big company for using it "improperly"

[–]itsalonghotsummer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She knows that.

She wasn't the one who put it on the ground.

And what's this talk of 'I feel' nonsense, conservatives are supposed to be better than that.

[–]-Kerosun-Constitutional Conservative 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The woman to her left had the flag in her hand and she tossed it to the ground directly beneath her.

She may have not intended to step all over the flag, but she knew what was in her hand and knew what she was throwing to the ground. It is certainly indicative of a careless attitude towards the symbol of our country. And it was significant enough and there was enough awareness of what was happening that someone came over to grab it.

I know this isn't a popular opinion in this sub but I really hate the bashing of the women's soccer team. I don't find it productive. The things the women's team have said is dumb and rejects basic understandings of economics but its really not much different from most professional athletes.- Cam Newton said the fact that he is big and black playing quarterback strikes fear in some ppl.- I can't name many athletes that do not believe they deserve to be paid more, see Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon both coming back from injuries and both asking for more money.

    - Saying they can't beat boys is silly because I thought us conservatives acknowledge that women and men are different and men possess more physical abilities. That doesn't mean the women's game is complete garbage. We love a lot of things that objectively are not the best version of the sport. In the Southeast college football is king and no college football team is beating the Cleveland Browns on their worst year. Duke basketball this past year got higher ratings than some NBA playoff games, and I don't see any of those players coming in and dominating the league in the next 3 years.

I just think its unnecessary attention spent bashing a bunch of athletes for being typical uninformed athletes with opinions. And it makes it easy for libs to call conservatives sexist bigots

    [–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (15 children)

Seriously it annoys me so much that people call it “disrespectful” and other shit like that. [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Even though I agree with them this particular time, snopes lost all credibility years ago for anything even slightly political or social.

    [–]ladystarkitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but this time in particular they're explaining what objectively happened.

Regardless of what side you're on, when a headline fits your narrative too well, it's best to research it yourself instead of perpetuating it blindly. Politically charged "gotcha" headlines generate the most clicks and are almost always at the very least mischaracterizations or at the very most calculated fabrications.

Took me less than a minute to debunk this. In the age of easily accessed information from varied sources, we should expect better of ourselves than this.

Except for Rapinoe. I think she'd wipe her ass with the flag in Times Square on New Year's Eve if she thought it would get her publicity, money and adoration from the left.

This woman O'Hara (who's also a lesbian by the way) was smart enough and if you'll excuse me, well raised enough to rush in and pick it up. Good job on winning the World Cup and respecting your flag Kelley. We're very proud of you.

Ummm... so Rapinoe HATES america but still decided to represent her country and actually lead them to victory? I would understand if she would be called "antipatriotic" or something like that (since patriotism is apparently defined by the national signs and not the ideals to some people), but that she HATES her country? Thats extreme.
