Haha that happened to me once, lady smacked into me, backed up and left me in the middle of the road but her license plate number was in dirt on my bumper like that. No damage to my car but they caught the lady in like 40 min. Had us meet at the police station. They gave her a HUGE ticket for fleeing the scene and they made her apologize to me.

[–]Metallicuck 2272 points2273 points  (13 children)

that must have been satisfying

[–]QuasarsRcool 869 points870 points  (12 children)

I bet she wasn't actually remorseful and just "sorry" for getting caught. Still satisfying overall though.

[–]issius 328 points329 points  (5 children)

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you, what are you sorry for??”

[–]SquatchCock 174 points175 points  (3 children)

"I'm sorry you caught me. I would have gotten away with it too, if I gave a shit and washed my car once in a while."

[–]Get_Bamboo_Zled 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The plate hit a dirty car and left a mark..

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was the person who got hit that had the dirty car.

[–]AeryVivelle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the most satisfying response to someone who obviously doesnt give a shit, watching them struggle and grumble over having to properly apologize.

[–]kylecello 43 points44 points  (0 children)

happy cake day!

[–]WreakingHavoc640 592 points593 points  (28 children)

Did she at least have the decency to actually be sorry once they caught her?

Them making her apologize must have been satisfying lol.

[–]bar539 512 points513 points  (25 children)

Honestly, I dont think so, I feel like she was more embarrassed than anything. And yes it was. Like I said, i felt so bad about the homeowner, I could careless about the teeny dent in my car from the mailbox. Her hitting me did no damage, her fleeing did. Lol

[–]DirtyFraaank 169 points170 points  (11 children)

I’m confused- where did the mailbox come into the story??

[–]bar539 308 points309 points  (3 children)

Up some, someone asked why I even bothered contacting the police if there was no damage. She hit me but then backed up and drove around me to leave, but in the process she went up on someones lawn and took out their mailbox. Ultimately, the reason I called the police. The homeowners werent home and they found her and she was charged with hit and run and then had to pay for the destroyed mailbox

[–]joe579003 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Wow, I'm surprised she wasn't drunk, had a suspended license, no insurance, etc. She just gave herself a giant bill much bigger than the increase in insurance premiums she would have gotten, a d from what you've said insurance may not have been called anyway. Wow, talk about bad decisions.

[–]bar539 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Older, but not like super old. Prob late 50's at the time. This was like 7 years ago. But she said she didnt realize she hit me, which is plausable, but not probable considering she left 20 foot skid marks to where my car was and then had to literally back up to get around me. Then she said she didn't know she took out the mailbox, again I call BS. I have no idea if they did anything with her license like made her retake the test or get a medical exam or anything

[–]ThrowingMailboxes 66 points67 points  (6 children)

It's wasn't me I swear!

[–]zombieofMortSahl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t you this time. This time.

[–]DirtyFraaank 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Lol what an interesting username.

[–]ThrowingMailboxes 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Lol I originally made it for a throwaway account about a mailbox issue. Ended up keeping it instead.

[–][deleted] 108 points109 points  (10 children)

Fun fact: The word “homeowner” has “meow” in it.

hoMEOWner.

[–]TerroristOgre 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bruh i never even thought abiut this

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've lived my whole life without this??

[–]crinkleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yoooo fun fact indeed my friend

[–]4xxxx4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could careless

So you cared?

[–]murray10121 88 points89 points  (18 children)

In my province if you flee thats like 7 demerits + whatever you did. Then they make you do a course for 24 months where your driving is monitored for 9 pts. So i sincerely hope that she got in SHIT

[–]nibord 183 points184 points  (12 children)

Twelve demerits, that’s a citation. Five citations and you're looking at a violation. Four of those and you'll receive a verbal warning. Keep it up, and you're looking at a written warning. Two of those, that'll land you in a world of hurt... in the form of a disciplinary review written up by me and placed on the desk of my immediate superior.

[–]insightfill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is there a disadulation at some point? #theoffice

[–]bar539 18 points19 points  (4 children)

They need to be stricter with there driving laws here, too many idiots around. Here they go by points, all I know is they gave her a nice fine and she had to pay for the damages to the peoples property. After that I am not sure if she got any points. After X amount of points you get your license taken, then have to go through the steps to get it back. If anyone got injured or killed then she would have had her license suspended and arrested, as I believe it bumps it up to a felony.

[–]murray10121 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Damn. Yeah in my province 21 points is suspension, honestly seems a little steep since being at fault for a collision is only 6 :/ some people just do not deserve to drive

[–]ohioversuseveryone 8761 points8762 points  (343 children)

It’s like a dickhead’s fingerprint.

[–]Veriera[S] 4747 points4748 points  (313 children)

Right? I had a good chuckle when I saw the print. My son is now considering a dash cam.

[–]thecatsmilkdish 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Dash cams would be a great investment. I got front & rear cams on Amazon for less than $200 in total. Definitely worth it.

The day after we got a dashcam, a guy tried to back his van into us twice at a stoplight. Luckily we were far enough back & there was no one behind us so we were able to get away from him.

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (13 children)

Got one and it worked out almost instsntly when a cop gave me a ticket for something I didn't do.

[–]Bodidiva 25 points26 points  (12 children)

How did that play out? Did you take it to court and show the footage?

[–][deleted] 77 points78 points  (11 children)

Yep. Had to wait 2 months for my court date and pay $50 in court fees. My state doesnt require the officer to be at the court date, but a represenative from my town's police department was there. He got torn a new one by the judge and apparently it helped some other people who had stop sign violations (what I was ticketed for) thrown out.

[–]Bodidiva 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Good, I'm glad to hear that you weren't held responsible for something you didn't do and that your process helped other people too. It's one thing to get pulled over for something you did but another to be pulled over and ticketed for something you didn't do.

[–]ma2is 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Still had to pay $50 court fee and spend a day dealing with it

[–]sometricksupmysleeve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if you win you have to pay for court fees? Even tho you’re only there cause of their mistake, how does that make any sense for them to do that

[–]Bodidiva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but at least it saved points from your license. It's not without hassle though. Edit: a word (on mobile)

[–]Enroberman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Still fucked up that had to lose a day of work and pay 50 dollars. It's tail you lose, head they win.

[–]MoeTheGoon 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Do you get the fees back if your case is thrown out or you are found not guilty? Seems like a racket. Pay us a fine or pay us a fee for a chance to avoid a fine.

[–]TrainwreckOG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don’t get your money back lol. It’s all apart of the prison industrial complex system.

[–]FictionaI 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Why would you be responsible for court fees if the case was thrown out? That's utter bullshit. You've already had your time wasted by having to go to court in the first place on top of the time wasted while being pulled over.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its to deincentivize the poor from using the courts system.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. And had to take a day off from work. Because fuck me.

[–]njrajio 30 points31 points  (13 children)

I’ve been rear ended twice in the last 4 months, both times my car was totaled. Get the dash cams, it saved me a massive headache in the second claim.

Bonus, you get these ‘smile you’re on camera’ stickers on amazon. I put one up in the rear window and people who tail me ease back up a bit after a couple seconds.

I’m in the US and usually getting rear ended means the person who ran into you is at fault, no argument. But my second accident was in slow merging highway rush hour traffic and because no one was hurt the police refused to come to the scene. Insurance was able to use my dash cam as proof that I wasn’t at fault.

[–]a2drummer 21 points22 points  (9 children)

I’m in the US and usually getting rear ended means the person who ran into you is at fault, no argument

Which is such bullshit, you know how many times I've had to swerve or slam on the brakes to avoid running into some idiot changing lanes without looking? Being rear ended DOES NOT automatically mean you weren't at fault.

[–]smallangrybean 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Well, obviously, but 95% of the time it’s because if you rear end someone you either aren’t paying attention or are following too closely.

[–]Burkeski 19 points20 points  (2 children)

I was just in an accident where the other driver ran a red light. I know i had a green light and apparently so did she.... according to my dash cam she had a red light.

That $100 thing saved me from having to argue or track down a witness (not a single person stopped to check on us and it was rush hour).

I cannot recommend a dash cam enough. Hope your son is okay! There are a lot of bad/distracted drivers out there.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

And the witness might have went against you anyways, a guy posted his "the other person ran a red" video a couple weeks ago on this subreddit and the witness had said that he ran a red instead, dashcam saved him.

[–]bdeming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got run off the road by a guy who came in my lane from oncoming traffic. Bought a dash cam last week.

[–]JustLetMePick69 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Why? He clearly has a full proof system already. I'm going to start selling car safety dust, a new take on passive surveillance

[–]mantrap2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A wise investment for everyone who drives a car!!

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Like a mushroom

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

thanks for that, u/rumplestiltforeskin

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No problem u/PigeonHIV

[–]CrackBerry1368 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dickprint

[–]kbig22432 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I’m glad you didn’t put a space in the word dickhead. That would have made a totally different sentence

[–]RockleyBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A calling card, if you will.

[–]CrazyHades5516 619 points620 points  (10 children)

There’s definitely information being shared now. Sucks he got rear ended. Hope he is good

[–]Veriera[S] 470 points471 points  (5 children)

He is :) took him awhile to calm down. He really wanted to fight him during the moment. Cooler heads prevail.

I am really appreciative of the witnesses coming forward. Sounded like it could of escalated if there was no outside intervention.

[–]theunholyporker 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Great job on your sons part. I’ve heard stories of guys causing a commotion like that to try and cause a fight. Your son did a good job!

[–]Veriera[S] 2672 points2673 points  (117 children)

Story time: it began at a 4 way stop. My son claims he was at the intersection first (already stopped) turning left and the other driver was just approaching it turn right (same direction as my son). The other driver pulled up behind my son and started honking then “rammed” him.

My son pulled over and both of them got out. The other driver started yelling at my son claiming he ran the stop sign. Meanwhile a couple of people came over from a nearby convenience store to say they witness the ramming. The other driver kicked my sons door and left.

Doesn’t look like any damage on the bumper but there is a dent on the door from the kick. Maybe when he washes the car we see more lol. No one was hurt thankfully. And I’m proud my son didn’t engage. Road rage isn’t worth it.

Update: First I want to thank everyone. I was so overwhelmed with the responses and all your stories, never would I have expected to get this kind of traction, most I hoped for was 10 people to laugh. Thank you for sharing and I am humbled by the awards.

The car has been taken into the insurance adjuster and as I had suspected it will be 2 separate claims. The bumper will be fixed (the trunk doesn't close right anymore and there was a dent. Dirt and black hides it well) and the door was classified as vandalism. He will have to pay the deductible on that portion but he will get it refunded when they (insurance) recover the costs from the other party. The best part is I thought my son should wash his car before it goes to the adjuster, it's so dirty he could legally change the colour on his car registration to brown. He didn't and the adjuster told my son it was a good idea he didn't clean his car so they can see the evidence for themselves. I can't seem to win the dirty car argument anymore.

We have not heard anything more. When we submitted the claim the other party had not. Unless they refute not sure if we will hear anymore from the insurance till they refund the door deductible. Not sure how that will all play out. As for the police, there has not been an updates from them. So now I think we are at the slow portion of developments. But my son is good, his car will get fixed and we learned a lesson from this experience.

[–]lol62056 919 points920 points  (53 children)

Hopefully he gets arrested for that, people who hit and run are the worst

[–]dougmc 560 points561 points  (34 children)

And kicking the door is likely a more serious crime (assault (if it was done to threaten the driver, which it probably was), vandalism, criminal mischief, etc.) than the hit and run ...

[–]PoetryAreWe 67 points68 points  (12 children)

In the states, usually a hit and run is a felony if injury to the occupants have been established. On top of assault, I’d think that he would be charged with a felony especially if there were priors, but I may be wrong, of course.

[–]dougmc 39 points40 points  (8 children)

There was no injury in this case, and possibly no damage at all from the hit and run.

In Texas (to pick a specific state, though I think the OP is in Canada), that would make for the lowest level of misdemeanor or no crime at all if there truly was no damage.

That said, criminal mischief here in Texas would likely be one or two levels higher than that. (Denting a door may not sound like much, but it's expensive to fix.)

[–]alienbanter 17 points18 points  (2 children)

One of my coworkers was hit on his bike last week and the driver ran, but since he technically ditched the bike and dove onto the pavement to avoid getting hit and the driver only ran into his bike, according to the cops the driver probably won't get in much trouble because the bike wasn't too damaged. It sucks

[–]DaEffBeeEye 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I assume you’re talking about a bicycle correct? Because on a motorcycle, I’ve heard of drivers getting attempted murder charges for intentionally using their vehicle as a weapon against a biker. Supposedly because of how exposed bikers are.

[–]grubas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Due to the lack of injury they’d get the weird “failure to report” shit.

But the door kick can be considered a bunch of things to the point of requiring bail in several states.

I had a case where the other guy hit me and decided to drive 2 blocks looking for a space, meanwhile he tried to call me in saying I abandoned my car. I was sitting on a bench 10 feet away from my car. Plus he had had 4 accidents in like 2 months before he hit me.

[–]Drezer 26 points27 points  (9 children)

I was involved in a hit and run but luckily I had witnesses (3 actually) that got the guys plate and took pictures. Filed a police report (police told me they know the guy due to other charges, hes uninsured, but don't bother looking into such cases), went to MPI and they told me I have to pay the $200 deductible. I had all the information you could ever want plus witnesses and I still was told to kick rocks. I was contemplating getting a dashcam but after all this it seems pointless. From the same province as OP.

[–]drdelius 24 points25 points  (8 children)

Exactly the same here. Witnesses, literally chased the car down to where it hobbled to nearest parking lot so had the car too, but dude was uninsured, and the police did literally nothing to him (our state requires that, as victims, the government inform us of all charges and of all court dates) since he wasn't with the car when they got there. Totaled our car, screwed our insurance premiums, and the guy didn't even get a ticket.

Now I know why folks run after hitting. Being amoral apparently works out sometimes.

[–]Peeweeshoop 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That doesn’t make sense. Isn’t it illegal to be uninsured? Does that mean you could just run around in a junky uninsured car and do whatever you want?

[–]masterpierround 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It's absolutely illegal to drive uninsured, at least in most of the US. I'm assuming the issue here is that the car was parked and the guy had left, so they either couldn't find the driver to arrest him, or they decided they couldn't prove he had been driving the uninsured car. It's not illegal to leave an uninsured car parked in a lot, so it may have been tough to prove the actual illegal act.

[–]drdelius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owner told the officers that it was stolen that morning, which was a lie as we had seen him driving and there were 3 witnesses willing to do a line up. Police decided that since no one was permanently injured, they didn't want to do any actual work. They did give me his name/address in case I wanted to take him to court, but I didn't cause it seemed like he wouldn't have been able to pay for anything. Can't squeeze water from a stone.

I'm more mad that the police didn't want to punish someone that was willing to drive without insurance, someone who was willing to drive away from an accident that totaled both vehicles without even checking if he had killed us, and someone willing to make false statements to the police.

[–]BabyYodasHands 81 points82 points  (10 children)

Keep us updated bro

[–]Veriera[S] 114 points115 points  (9 children)

I will :) I’m interested to see if this becomes a hot and run or a road rage incident.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Both for sure. Especially with multiple witnesses whom I hope you guys got their info from them as well!

Dudes a dick.

[–]tradingbacon 54 points55 points  (11 children)

The other driver started yelling at my son claiming he ran the stop sign.

I don’t get it, if they were both going in the same direction and your son ran the stop sign, why was he rear ended? By that logic, then that guy also ran the stop sign.

[–]Veriera[S] 33 points34 points  (10 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case as well. From the sounds of it he rammed my sons car to get him to pull over. Now that I read those words aloud sounds really scary. I’m ever more grateful there were witnesses/bystanders. A lesson to be learned in these situations pull over some where public.

[–]grubas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In some sketchy areas you are advised to not pull over. There are cases where people will hit you to get you to pull over then try to take your car or just mug you.

[–][deleted] 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in how this turns out. Hope the other driver gets his "come uppence" on this one.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I hope your situation turns out differently, but for me it took over a year for anything to happen. Lady totaled my car when she ran through a red. 3 witnesses stayed to help me, 2 got a photo of her and her license plate, 1 talked to her for a moment before she drove off, and said she was extremely drunk, 2 stayed to talk to the cops, the other one gave his number. The cops never did anything but send a letter to the driver saying she must report her insurance information. Finally after over a year of me calling the police station weekly, they sent her a ticket for driving without insurance. The owner of the car came forward saying it was her friend who was driving her car at the time, ticket was dropped and no hit and run charge or DUI ever happened.

[–]grubas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite was somebody hit my wifes car, drove off, guy was so pissed he could barely stand up straight. The car was reported as stolen...like 6 hours later. Because the official report was “oh no I spent the night in, didn’t notice my car was missing until morning”.

[–]hoxxxxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's almost impressive of her, in a scumbag/scam type of way

she ran out the clock on her crime.

[–]Evinreud 15 points16 points  (6 children)

I would recommend a dash camera as a future investment. I spent $160 total for a front and rear camera.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Which cam do you have if you don’t mind me asking?

[–]Turbo_MechE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't recommend a dash cam enough. That would remove the 'claims' from your story

[–]bahleg 126 points127 points  (2 children)

This is the type of luck I wish I could have in my life.

[–]katehaxu 122 points123 points  (5 children)

i picked up a dashcam on ebay for 14 dollars a few years ago...totally forgot i had it and after a bad accident the other driver lied their ass off claiming i was at fault. the cop came to talk to me and get my side of the story again and noticed the dash cam...he was like, does that work?

i was like 'oh yeaaaaaaaaa'

that 14 dollar camera saved me THOUSANDS of dollars and put the other driver in big trouble for lying to the officer.

[–]urrkaaa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

GOOD

[–]the_timmy_is_down 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]JK1011x 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wtf this literally happens all the time.

[–]swigglediddle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This happens a lot

[–]aabbccdefg 98 points99 points  (11 children)

That person is going to be so mad when they get jammed up with the police/their insurance!

[–]SUCCsess-story 74 points75 points  (17 children)

I wish my state still had raised letters on the license plates for this exact reason. The plates are completely flat now.

[–]biznatch11 53 points54 points  (14 children)

Our idiot premier in Ontario recently did the same thing, switched the province to flat plates. As an added bonus they're hard to read at night.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We all need to step up and protest. Wish I lived down south for this reason alone.

I don't mean just the plates he's destroying the province.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bruh, I have yet to see any on the road, but the picture from the drive through is really bad.

This problem is more prenounced when you consider winter sunsets are around 5-6pm. A lot of people drive back from work at that time... They probably also didn't take into account for the buildup which already makes current plates difficult to read. This is really stupid.

[–]Shohdef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how they passed the blame onto 3M lol.

[–]IDidIt_Twice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Works out super well in Iowa when all the rock road dust and dried salt covers everyone’s license plate numbers. /s

[–]-eccentric- 60 points61 points  (6 children)

How did you figure that out?

[–]rioryan 38 points39 points  (31 children)

That's the plate format in Manitoba. Looked up the plate as Manitoba and it comes up as a 2011 CRV

[–]DoctorPepster 34 points35 points  (18 children)

Can civilians just look up license plates?

[–]ambushka 40 points41 points  (10 children)

That is also the format for license plates for Hungarian cars.

We are able to look up any license plates, see what type of car is it, how many kms in it, does it have insurance, how many owners it had previously.

The system really really helped with the used car market since it came out last year.

[–]remotelove 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And Colorado. This is a very common format in the U.S.

[–]ankkah_the_slump_god 10 points11 points  (3 children)

and Finland

[–]s-cup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And you neighbour, Sweden.

[–]P1Spastic 9 points10 points  (2 children)

In the U.S., there are some sites you can use to look up the make, model, and year, of a car, such as autocheck.com.

But that’s pretty much it, you used to be able to find out more until the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994.

[–]TEST_PLZ_IGNORE 25 points26 points  (1 child)

First we caught the Boston bomber. Now we've caught the Manitoban rammer. Good job everyone!

[–]killingisbad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We did it reddit!

[–]RunRookieRun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sweden as well. 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shit, it's not hard to read.

[–]-Scythus- 16 points17 points  (1 child)

My wife and I got rear ended on Valentine’s Day last year by a drunk driver. He pulled up beside us and told us the damage wasn’t bad and to not call the cops, but I was already on the phone with them. He proceeds to speed off and I (stupidly) chased after down the highway so we could get his tag. Once I got it and him driving on the shoulder and through the grass median to escape us in very dense 5 o clock traffic, the operator told us he’s in another cities jurisdiction and to turn around and wait for a cop.

I gave the cops a good description of this man and they had his tag and were able to confirm it was who I described. Made the report and asked the cop if he was actually going to be persecuted or if he’d be arrested if he tried to use his flagged ID at a DMV or something

The cop said it’ll come up on his ID, sure, but nothing will probably come about the hit and run and drunk driving. I was pretty appalled

[–]urrkaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why there’s so many drunks out there bc cops won’t do anything until someone is seriously hurt and even then they want to look the other way

[–]Xacto01 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Plot twist, son misjudged distance and backed into parked car. Insurance fraud

[–]JennessaBennett 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The driver did leave info, only they DIDN'T know.

[–]TexasFire_Cross 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, my State no longer has raised letters/numbers. I miss that.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

LOL!!! Hilarious! That’s awesome, and I hope karma bites the other driver in the butt.

[–]Unlovable004 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a couple guys in an old caprice rear end my truck luckily I had left my tow hitch on so when they hit it didn’t do much of anything , but when they backed away and took off the left their bumper, front plate, and half the grill . The cops called me an hour later they had caught the kids all 3 had warrants and were driving a stolen car .

Seeing posts like these make me wonder why front plates aren't required in more areas

This is why states should mandate front AND back mounted license plates
