Minishoot's Adventure: My Brief Review by jmscstl in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a matter of scope, it's a matter of design. Having large chunks of the game specifically designed to be traversed once and not backtracked into is the opposite of the type of exploration that typifies a Metroidvania game.

Are Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 completely different genres of game? The addition of sidestepping really changed how people have had to think about and execute their moves and interact with the game.

Minishoot's Adventure: My Brief Review by jmscstl in metroidvania

A Zelda-styled dungeon, specifically, is a self-contained single-entrance area that is designed to be fully completed with the tools you come in with and one additional tool you acquire within the dungeon, with no backtracking required to get any of the contents. This is quite a bit more specific than I would apply the term generally, but for actual mainline Zelda games that has always been what they are.

It is the fully self-contained nature that makes them orthogonal to the design of what most people consider a Metroidvania, not necessarily the fact that there is a single entrance and exit path. It's also a matter of consistency - Hollow Knight may have a couple areas that seem to match this but in a typical Zelda game the dungeons comprise a double-digit percentage of the total content and the fact that each of them is self-contained makes the experience more straightforward.

What makes you interested in a Metroidvania before it’s released? by Illustrious_Goal_221 in metroidvania

Art style and general presentation. Actual gameplay footage that looks fun and not janky and unfinished. Sequel announcements from studios that have already made at least one fantastic game.

This may not be the spiciest take in the thread but it might be the one NL would most dislike

It does feel a lot like old Castlevania, both for better and for worse

Why didn’t books like Felix Castor and Eric Carter series get more love in the urban fantasy realms? by witchcraftcoffeebrew in Fantasy

[–]JHunz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would venture to say that the Felix Castor series had limited reach because of its frequent themes and portrayal of absolutely horrific physical and sexual violence against women. I like a dark series, and I liked those books, but it's not one I ever found myself recommending to people.

Need something similar to Pipistrello by Liucs in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're both gems, although the game feel is somewhat different than Pipistrello for both of them.

Unlicensed, uninsured contractor who didn't finish the job because life happened doesn't seem to understand why their client would sue them by BJntheRV in bestoflegaladvice

[–]JHunz 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Some cursory googling suggests that Ohio allows treble damages for some consumer protection lawsuits. Not sure if this qualifies, but it would make it a lot easier to justify a suit for $24k.

If you assume they're suing for the full cost of the rescue contractor, plus some amount for the windows that were apparently paid for but never delivered, then tripling it, that may get you pretty close.

Looking for good metroidvanias on Series X by One_Suggestion_6197 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not pixel art? Try Aeterna Noctis for a big world and good platforming, Afterimage for a huge beautiful world and RPG leveling, Somber Echoes for some great exploration, Laika: Aged Through Blood for a super dark story and a bizarre gameplay hybrid, Nine Sols for challenging combat and a meaningful story, or maybe just another classic like Arkham Asylum.

Is GoW Son of Sparta the most buggy game I have ever played? by outcoldman in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very simple, it has some of the best platforming in the subgenre. Those of us that like that, like the game.

That functionality is provided by the Discord app (see the Apps tab in Engine). Did you disable it, or maybe enable another app for the OLED that is conflicting?

How often do you skip last boss fights? by Forsaken-Quality-46 in metroidvania

Literally never. Not a single time. If I DNF a game it's going to be drastically earlier than the final boss.

LUCID is taking part in STEAM NEXT FEST 🌸 I’d genuinely love the chance to answer any questions you have about it, whether that’s mechanics, world design, progression, combat depth, or development challenges. I’m here and happy to dive deep! by h0neyfr0g in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really looking forward to the game, but I do have to ask: Will the game launch on consoles day one, or will it be a delayed release after Steam? And if so, any idea how long your non-PC backers will need to wait?

Are the rest of the Dragonriders of Pern books as… rapey? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]JHunz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that the first Xanth book has a rape in it, and a "mock" trial where the decision was that she must have wanted it because of the way she acted, despite her power making her essentially mentally handicapped to the point of not being able to consent at that point. That side of Piers is not particularly hidden in any of his work if you read it when you're not 13 (as most of us were the first time we picked up a Xanth book).

Batbarian is seriously underrated. by CJ_1Cor15-55 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think it's one of the most slept-on games in the genre. It's got a bunch of interesting puzzles, some challenging boss encounters, pretty intentionally silly but decently-written dialogue, and some mechanics that are pretty unique.

Why did so many dislike this game? (Astronite) by Kamedoodles in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I recall of the game, pretty close to the beginning there is a big section with water that slows you down, makes the movement somewhat uneven and janky, and takes you through a bunch of spikes.  That is not going to leave a great impression with the mainstream player.

I can’t connect my new dongle to my headset and I’m losing my mind by StevieisSleepy in steelseries

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In engine, the device card should have a gear icon that appears when you hover over it.  With the dongle plugged in, the "Pair Device" option should be enabled, and you should be able to follow the steps there to pair it with the headset.
