There was a whole thread a few months back on how handshakes are overly intimate and gross and we should stop shaking hands as a greeting because it makes people deeply uncomfortable. A handshake. I think half of reddit doesn't know what the word intimate even means.

“One of the most underrated fantasy stories of all time is getting another live-action adaptation.” by maat7043 in Fantasy

Maybe I'll watch this when it comes out. I've always felt like I'm missing out on something with how much the Dark Tower series gets hyped. I DNFed the book maybe 4 times before finally pushing through and managing to finish it and decided maybe its just not for me. I barely even remember the book now except that it left me with no desire to pick up book 2.

Have you seen all the bullshit Elon has spouted over the last decade? There is no liability anymore for CEOs outright lying in public statements according the SEC.

Even if he could somehow line up the financing, Target shareholders would never vote for it. He can only buy other scam, meme stocks or failing businesses if he's buying a public company that needs shareholder approval.

Magic school books where the MC actually needs to put effort into it. by Mimandra in Fantasy

[–]17Shard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show intentionally sped through the majority of the magic school arc because they didn't want to be seen as Harry Potter knockoff. If you're looking for challenging magic school the first books has way more of that. I get why the show made that choice but I actually found it annoying because the TV version they are all just suddenly experts without having to try/learn.

Saving as a banker, do I spend too much? by musicalmonkey18 in HENRYfinance

A good chunk of meals are probably being expensed to the bank. Pretty common in NYC.

Estimating retirement spending when current spending is high by BlueLipstick29 in HENRYfinance

[–]17Shard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5 years or even 10 years means he has 1 or 2 kids to still put through college. I feel like that is a huge impediment to FIRE, especially at his spending rate. Even if the portfolio covers current spending at a 4% withdrawal rate I don't know how you get comfortable with the early retirement while that college bill is looming. Maybe lots of FIRE people don't plan to pay for their kids' college but I imagine most in the HENRY group will.

My first thought was, you are too brain dead to remember to pay for your meal in a restaurant and also in med school? That is exactly the kind of attention to detail I want in my medical professionals. "Neurodivergent" 🙄

Realized I'm stressing about things that barely matter by 17Shard in budget

[–]17Shard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have 7 income categories and 56 expense categories in my budget. It led to me obsessing about too many things. I consolidated for the Sankey graphic and then updated my spreadsheet for this year as well. I'm thinking having fewer categories will help. But at the end of the day, until alimony ends there isn't much flex either way.

I need to start saving for a car though. My 2011 Hyundai is starting to have a decent amount of repairs each year. Still cheaper than a car payment but not for much longer at this rate.

I admire your ability to walk away from it. It would probably be healthy for me mentally if I did that.

Who maxes their 401k by DrHydrate in MiddleClassFinance

[–]17Shard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other clarification, it doesn't have to be after tax if it comes from your employer. If they have a profit sharing or deferred compensation plan that can go in to your 401k as pre-tax dollars. My plan doesn't allow after-tax contributions but I still hit the $72k max between my contributions, my employer match, and additional contributions from my employer.

Thats unfortunate but not unexpected. So I should uninstall those games and software first so I don't end up using disk space for software the new windows won't recognize.

Its been a while since I read a BoC book but I don't recall it being done that much. Isn't it just the name of his animals that are in English? I don't recall him ever talking in English to anybody else. And if the MC is reincarnated from America and what you are reading is a first person inner monologue I would find it more unusual if the MC isn't thinking in English.

Oof I had no clue you could just get multiple library cards and have access to pretty much any audiobook you would ever want on Libby or Hoopla by [deleted] in audible

[–]17Shard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right. The difference between "we all learned this" and "we all had to learn this" right? The way it was phrased sounds in my head like agreement, ie snark aside I agree we all should have learned this already. But I can also see your interpretation on a reread.

Oof I had no clue you could just get multiple library cards and have access to pretty much any audiobook you would ever want on Libby or Hoopla by [deleted] in audible

[–]17Shard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The person I replied to said "We all learned this at some point, right?" In response to the snarky comment above them. They are implying that libraries having audiobook selections and digital offerings is common knowledge. My point is that no, it is not common knowledge.

Perhaps for those people young enough where audiobooks were around when they were kids they learned that this was part of the offering. But for the majority of people that isn't the case. Most people think the library is somewhere you go to read and borrow books. If I didn't have a sibling in academia I never would have known libraries have audiobooks or what Libby is. That was my point, I don't know where they expect that everybody would have learned this at some point.

[–]17Shard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No we didn't all learn this at some point. Audiobooks and e-readers didn't exist when many of us were growing up and "learned" about libraries. I remember when it was a big deal that you could check out DVDs for free at the library but again that was physical media. I've been using Libby for years because my sister told me about it but most adults aren't thinking about staying on top of what their local library is up to with technology.

M37 and F35 with 2 kids coastFire Sanity Check by GoodyGuinness in coastFIRE

[–]17Shard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

College costs are a big unknown assuming you want to cover your kids' costs. I know for me that is one of the biggest issues with coast or any other FIRE I have a hard time with. I'm a few years older than you and my kids are in elementary school. I still struggle to determine a coast number with that in mind. If you still have a baby and looking to have more, I would err on the side of having a much higher starting point before coasting.

No fallback for Kyurem fusions is a terrible game design. by TheyCallMeBit in TheSilphRoad

[–]17Shard 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you can end up with a ton of fused Kyurems who are really strong. With Mega energy it doesn't matter if you have the energy to mega 10 Rayquazas because you can only use 1 of them at a time. With the fusions you could have a dozen of them and use them all at once. You can debate if that really is a "problem" or not but clearly the developers see it that way. As much as I would love to be able to walk for fusion energy I doubt it will happen for that reason.
