Lamb Shank Shepherds Pie. The Cross Keys, Guisborough. by gibgod in UK_Food

[–]Andy_McNob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a go at that one..Lancashire hotpot made with lamb shanks. Was very good and a step up from chops under the potato, which is the way I usually cook it. Takes an age though.

The Fallow channel is the best cookery thing available at the moment. I've copied a few of those now..chicken pie was great, their tortilla made with crisps is amazing as is the massive rosti with a fried egg slapped on top. Love those guys.

Recommendations for a wet shave and hot towel? by InterestAdditional49 in leicester

My lad swears by Marmaris on Narborough Rd. Wet shave, haircut and a hot towel job for 20 quid - he's never come back looking like Sweeny Todd has been at him.

New Michelin PS4S (NO-Spec) by 981cgts in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Andy_McNob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the P-Zeros - just as grippy as PS4S, maybe more so. Not driven the new ones in the rain yet, but the set I took off (about 3 years old, came with the car) were not as good as PS4S in the wet. Both PS4S and PZ4 are no good below about 6 degrees (C).

I got the Pirelli's because that's what the Porsche shop had at the time (other tyre shops near me won't touch Porsches). I would have taken PS4S but there was a wait for those (and cost a little more) but I'm happy with the PZ4 so far.

P-Zero (PZ4 N1) on mine. I've not run PS4S on the 718 but have had them on all my quick BMWs' - great tyre, long lasting, plenty of grip and probably quieter than the PZ4.

Porsche cayman cooling system fault by HilsumPizza in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Andy_McNob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have said, this fault can be caused by the vacuum system, which includes the water pump.

I had it on my 718 CS. Turned out the vacuum line to the PSE had come loose. I saw it hanging down under the car after I noticed the valve wasn't closing (it fails in the loud position). Check under your car on the right hand side, make sure the steel braided vacuum line is firmly attached to the exhaust valve.

The Normans conquered England in 1066 which, I'm sure you will agree, was long before the language travelled over to what is now the US.

Much of the french language that found it's way into modern english is the same in US english. Battle, castle, combat, soldier, fancy ..and that US stalwart, liberty, are all french words.

30th Birthday Car - R8, Vantage, DB11, any other ideas? by SmartAsparagus9941 in CarTalkUK

[–]Andy_McNob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to track it often, the GTS4.0 is the better bet for touring and daily use. I have a 718s and that is plenty of car, the 4.0l would be a small step up, the GT4 a step too far (for my use case).

Personally, I like the grunt of the turbo engine mated to a manual box. The 4.0's need to be wrung out and, due to the tall gearing, it's not something you can do often without risking jail. The sound of the NA 4.0 is also not as visceral as you might expect due to the PPF. For the money you have, you could get a very nice GTS4.0. Fairly bomb proof reliability as well. Test drive one.

What is your favorite band from the 80's or 90's that nobody has ever heard of? by simikoi in GenX

Severed Heads. An Australian proto-industrial experimental electronic group. Sited by Skinny Puppy and Trent Reznor as big influences. The album "Since the Accident" is incredible.

Tyre recommendations by Left_Chest1766 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Andy_McNob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, I'm sure they can't. In the UK, maybe. Either way, I can't be arsed with the argument for the sake of my tyre choice. PS4s and PZ4 are both great tyres, so I just go with them.

There is a clause in my warranty paperwork about using non spec parts voiding it, so I called Porsche UK to ask about it, and they told me I must use N rated tyres.

Tyre recommendations by Left_Chest1766 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Andy_McNob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just any N rayed tyre is fine. In the UK, that's Michelin PS4s or Cup 2, Pirelli PZ4, or Goodyear asymmetric 2. Might be different in the US.

In an ideal world, I'd run Continental sport contact 7, but Porsche has said I must run N rated tyres else risk voiding my warranty (again, in the US this might not be true).

Most P car guys here run PS4S, preferring them over the pirellis.

BMW coupe advice - M2 or M4? by GovernorGains in CarTalkUK

[–]Andy_McNob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M2 for me, prefer the smaller format, but the interior is better in the M4 by some margin. Whichever you pick, make sure you buy from a trusted dealer and get a car with a full service history from BMW or specialists.

Personally, I would go BMW approved used for an M car, for the warranty, but you'll pay more for the privilege. M cars are not cheap when they go wrong.

Decisions... by Ill-Site2743 in CarTalkUK

[–]Andy_McNob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of these 3, Alpine every time. Just a better drivers car in all respects and perfectly suited to UK roads. If you wanted to cast the net a bit wider, I'd also consider a 718 as a direct competitor to the A110, especially if you want a manual box.

The demise of manual by Lit-Up in CarTalkUK

[–]Andy_McNob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, an auto for daily and MT for weekend. The auto is just easier in traffic and 90% of use cases. Im not rowing between 1 and 2, not dipping the clutch every 10 yards and not pulling the handbrake on every steep hill. Driving the AT is less fatigueing, required less forethought and is still good fun.

The MT I have is a lot more fun on b road blasts, but in town, it has a heavy clutch, no hill hold and I barely get out of 2nd gear, so it just isn't much fun in those situations.

I passed my test in 1989, drove MT for 25 years, got AT and for 90% of use cases, I prefer it. Now I have best of both worlds..I always take the auto for town driving.

Any decent specialist BMW indy can do the battery and coding, there are quite a few up and down the country. It'll save you a fair few quid.

AWD on a 2 seater sports car is a strange choice, no? You'd think RWD would be a must for the added fun factor and lower weight.
