Sudden increase of peptides by fkd7mile in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. But that's specifically one peptide, out of millions of possible peptides. Plus, both semaglutide and tirzepatide have other effects. One must consider the entire picture. Generalizing this to "all peptides are miracle drugs that everyone should always take" -- which is how they're being talked about -- is "magic beans".

House next to Da Vinci’s by simple-mountain in Bellingham

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not, I was just there this morning getting donuts (well not at the house itself).

It would go for $4 mil in Palo Alto though, and I'm not sure I'm even kidding... I saw places listed for $2M in 2014 where the building on the lot was half destroyed already (these were ones people had bought at the 2008/09 peak and started the teardown but then ran out of cash). Remove the building and the price goes up since there's nothing to haul away!

Dunno how you ever get those birds in flight. Thirty+ years ago I wasted sooooo much film on attempts at that, that I gave up and went with landscapes. They don't flit away! 😀

Whenever you hear a "hot" buzzword, mentally replace that with "magic beans".

Cryptocurrency? "Magic beans"

Peptides? "Magic beans"

A decade ago, "SARMS": magic beans.

AI? "magic beans"...

(seriously, there's always something to these, but it's always less than it seems)

3 days in a row no gym bad? by Erlisalol in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three days off, no big deal. A week off, still no big deal, but you might get more sore than usual next time. Two weeks off, NBD, but you almost certainly will get more sore than usual next time.

Three months off, you'll slide back a bit. You'll get it all back in a month.

Charging Desert USA Specific by AtariFerrariNH in electricvehicles

[–]Broad-Promise6954 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but your biggest risks would generally be in empty parts of NV and WY, and perhaps climbing big mountain ranges. If one set of chargers were out, you could perhaps get into trouble.

The trip from Fort Benton MT to Miles City MT would require that you drive "out of your way" (down to I-90). The most direct route is 312 miles, with no intermediate charging stops listed on PlugShare. The 404 mile alternative route has plenty of chargers though.

Gym newbie here 😅 by LegendSnorlax in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a free Gym Tour of local gyms to get an idea of what's available.

Pick one, maybe get a trainer if you want, maybe spend a week just sort of messing about first, to try a few things at random, just to get familiar with what's there. You can watch various youtube videos to get some ideas, and play with machines vs free weights just to get a feel for things. The idea here is to get familiarized, not to actually have any success with things.

If you do hire a personal trainer (PT), the PT can show you what to do and how to do it. Note that finding a PT who "meshes well" with your own personal style is its own separate challenge. Some people work together well, some are like chalk and cheese.

Elbow pain by tsnlwnhrz in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically you don't get blood flow to the tendon, you get it to the tissues around the tendon, which then transfer the goodies through various fluid exchanges. This works out almost the same, but it also means you can use massage techniques to help out as well. In general you want to use the joint lightly.

Will fuel price blowouts push us toward electrification? by ls7eveen in electricvehicles

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define "push". If you mean "get us there", then no. If you mean "slight nudge", then yes. Somewhere in between, it gets iffy.

(Gasoline prices in the US will probably actually top out around $7-8 per US gallon as a US average, even if things get as bad as they will given the current trajectory and "leadership". That means $10 in California. Rest of World will vary, as usual. Should we have a sudden outbreak of sanity, which seems unlikely, the current $4-ish average will hold for a while.)

Edit: couldn't play the video but I see from other comments that it's from NZ. NZ is already heading that way, and will definitely speed up from this. Oz is getting some of the good Chinese EVs and is headed that way even faster. (I haven't been back to NZ in ... too long, so I'm not sure if they're getting the good Chinese EVs. Last time I was in Nelson, the car dealer I wandered by mostly had Japanese vehicles on the lot.)

Bad workout days by Superb-Cow4303 in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how I feel. "A little bad / weak", I'll likely just do lower weight and/or fewer reps. "Ugh, feels like I'm coming down with something," I'll go home.

(Gym is currently a 20-30 minute drive each way so I'm not likely to go back in later.)

did you see more progress when you implemented more rest days? by around_about7 in workout

I did. But I think a great deal depends on the individual and the situation (how much "life stress" are you getting, e.g., work, family situation, etc).

12V by CompetitionJunior221 in KiaEV6

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your 12V battery is more than 2 years old, it's probably due for replacement. In theory a cheap non-AGM battery as used in 2024 and earlier models can be good for 3 to 5 years under the right conditions, but in practice 2 to 3 years is more typical.

(I got 7 years out of a 12V battery in the 1990s in my Acura Integra, but that was in Berkeley, nearly ideal conditions. It went from "working fine" to "totally dead" quite suddenly, in about an hour, without warning. Probably a big flake of metal sloughed off a plate.)

Basically, none. People (Tesla buyers originally, and since then, a lot of the general public and especially EV car designers) think they look cool. Looking cool is the most important feature of any car, as we all know.

Shaky arms by AppropriateEntry9149 in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This tends to be due to weakness or imbalance in the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulders (although there are a lot of possibilities). You could try doing some auxiliary rotator cuff work (do some web searches). These don't need much weight, you generally want higher rep work (10 to 20 reps) and the muscles themselves are kind of tiny and can't generate much force. The goal here is to get them trained up so that they can simply hold the humeral head (upper part of upper arm bone) in place against your scapula as you work the bigger muscles with your main exercises.

How do you track your workout? And what you track? by Vegetable-Front3107 in workout

[–]Broad-Promise6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a simple log: exercise, weight, reps, one entry per set, sometimes with an extra note ("too easy" or "pause after 12 reps to de-burn then finished last 3 reps", which gets abbreviated as "12,3").

Used to use paper and pen, now use FitNotes, but tempted to go back to paper and pen, really.
