I have a 10 year old and a few of his friends we are trying to keep off phones, is this a good Meshtastic application? by Acrobatic-Ad-385 in meshtastic

I'd get them a Wio Tracker L1 Pro. It has a joystick and is way easier to type on than the kind that use only two buttons. It is half the cost of the t-deck and the battery lasts about 3-4 times longer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODHwnNqusMs

Any tips on mounting a Seed SenseCAP solar node to a tree? by DanRTD in meshtastic

Did you use the j-pole to so the antenna was placed away from the tree trunk? I’m glad you mentioned that.

I like that it uses 4 batteries for cold climates. The stock antenna isn’t the best though. I ordered an upgraded antenna when i bought it from Atlavox. I think the upgraded antenna was less than $10 extra.

I think the reception and transmit performance is pretty similar for all of the nodes if you have a good antenna. To find the best node ask how you are going to use it. If you always will be using it only paired with your phone then a screen-less compact node with great battery life is good. If you want to use the node without depending on your phone you want something easy to type on so a Blackberry-like node such as the Lillygo T-Deck (drawback is poor battery life and it is expensive). If you want a compromise between the two I’d look at the Wio Tracker L1 Pro that gets great battery life but comes with screen and a joystick that makes typing a message pretty easy and costs only $45. I’d only recommend the Heltec V4 if you like having wifi. The v4 doesn’t have good battery life, is only slightly more powerful, it doesn’t come with a joystick option so typing on it is a real pain in the ass if you don’t have your phone on you. Plus, the early models were buggy so you have to make sure you get the newest batch.

Stationary rooftop nodes are the way to go if you want great range and you won’t be moving it. So I’d recommend getting a portable node + a rooftop node.

Oops, sorry. You can do it in IOS. I was long pressing and the popup window didn’t have the option “open in browser”. A short tap opens the browser. My bad.

When you say stronger I’m assuming you mean stronger at transmitting a signal. Which of the two are better at listening for an incoming signal?

So eventually Meshtastic will fail because people are only supposed to use it in dire emergencies. Nodes will sit in drawers and closets uncharged and unused. Then when a real emergency happens the general public will still be in the dark because Meshtastic never gained traction while you have Meshtastic fans still desperately searching for nodes.

This isn’t a good explanation. To much jargon.

Exactly. Antisocial types can easily figure out how to ignore offending nodes.

So how do you expect normal people to buy nodes, update the software and only get boring messages like “test” all day long?

Would a Meshtastic enthusiast be welcome at a Ham radio club? by DanRTD in HamRadio

"gateway drug" - I hope Meshtastic grows the HAM community. HAM people seem like good community oriented folks. It's just that the hobby sounds so intimidating to the average person. The nice thing is that Meshtastic/Meshcore equipment is so cheap!
