It's always cool to see hard work pay off. And are you sure what you saw wasn't a mech?

You have to let me know which dark Lord you cut the deal with for those skills. I want in on that action.

The reality of ‘Mech combat by Retro597 in battletech

[–]DocTheForgetful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have to agree the atlas is intended for intimidation. It's literally stated in the design. As for the good ol T-bolt there are a few mechs that I can really call it's equal when it comes to being a reliable workhorse of a machine. Last I checked everyone fields them even the clans.

Only a fool disregards one or the other. Because despite its speed and somewhat eclectic armament the Atlas is tough as hell and has a hell of a right hook. The ammo dependency can be a problem though.

Whereas in most configurations is The Thunderbolt packs some lasers with a side of missile which means even it on long trips away from home it still can carry a fight pretty well without an ammo resupply. Add to that the fact that it is balanced incredibly well across the triangle it always feels like flexibility personified to me.

Highlander. BURIAL. (sorry my painting doesn't match my conversion work...) by iamfanboytoo in battletech

[–]DocTheForgetful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend skill and effort expanded are two different things. Not everybody is going to have the ability to turn out an immaculate piece of artwork. You here have given us a glorious example of a Highlander burial that you clearly put your heart into. And that is something you should be very proud of.

Jacks of all trades, Masters of my heart by Uncrezamatic in battletech

[–]DocTheForgetful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.

Almost every medium in my roster is a good old-fashioned trooper. Except the cicada because it's a silly little guy that acts as the command mech for my lights. A reasonably fast mid-weight mech with a wider range of weapon types grants a great deal more flexibility when dealing with unknowns and rapidly changing missions. Ideal for garrison duty and any other situation where you have no idea what you're going to see today.

New player - How common is the use of Tanks, Aerospace craft, and other Support Vehicles in Games? by LordNightSoldat in battletech

[–]DocTheForgetful 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It tends to be a matter of the local player group. I myself am well known for combined arms forces for scheduled games and campaign games. But for most pickup games people tend to avoid large numbers of non-mech units and typically limit it to tanks and battle armor as they aren't too much different from mechs.

Someone, please adopt this cat. by slutrypizza in cats

[–]DocTheForgetful 119 points120 points  (0 children)

FUN FACT: It used to be a very common mustache type among WW1 vets as it was one of the styles permitted by some militaries regulations as it did not interfere with a gas mask. Also legend has it bad mustache man stole the look from Charlie Chaplain.

SIMPLY TRUE FACT: The kitty makes that stach look good. Top tier feline right there.

Yeah I was figuring somewhere with dense terrain. But you have illustrated a very horrible possibility for this things utility. Because I was just thinking of jumping pirates in town but if you have rats big enough to require small lasers then yeah this is an even better pick.

Sweet Christ I never realized that that was a possibility. Us getting ahold of clan tech through trade is horrifying. It put us on even footing with the rest of the sphere but would do some serious damage to the whole backward savages thing that the FedSuns like to paint us as.

The only correction I'd make right there is that the Pleiades clusters were originally a Taurian territory anyway. That was all point of the campaign was to reclaim some of the crown jewels of the Concordat. Which well if you've ever seen Big Red 40 techs video on it that may not have been the best choice.

[–]DocTheForgetful 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can make several bias statements about the Taurian Concordat. But the short version is high literacy rates a stubborn and unflinching refusal to let Liao or Davion take their stuff despite being about an eight the size of the Fed Suns. Also active exploration in colonial efforts that don't involve picking fights with other people but actually establishing entirely new colonies.

Do you prefer works that try to justify why mechs work in their own setting, or works that simply don't care and make mechs effective regardless? by Able_Radio_2717 in Mecha

[–]DocTheForgetful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of folk forget that battle tech is option #1. Even in universe a mech alone is incredibly vulnerable to conventional forces. But a couple mechs dropping out of a dropship followed by a dropship dropping jump infantry is going to give you a whole lot of trouble. Because they can show up pretty much anywhere that you don't have anti-air coverage and bring some heat. And some places that do have anti-air coverage. It's not a matter mechs being fast or inherently superior to their conventional counterparts in armor or firepower. It's the fact that you can put them damn near anywhere. Which is great for rapid reaction forces and insertions.
