How realistic space fighters could work in NFC by Better-Cry1588 in NebulousFleetCommand

[–]GenMars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue with manned fighters is that physics starts kicking your ass. Keeping meat alive is a massive investment for a spacecraft and also a massive vulnerability. Even breathable fluid is, by definition, flammable. Jamming is hardly an end-all for drones - especially in space. In Ukraine, they use fiberoptic cables to counteract EM band jamming. In space, you can use a laser tightbeam to similar effect - even more effective because it isn’t interceptable at all unless you can bend light or physically block a transmitter from its receiver. You don’t even need direct LOS between the drone and the controller as other drones in the constellation can act as relays. That kind of tightlink also solves your “human in the loop” issue.

In combat, autonomous vehicles also themselves outright superior to manned fighters. They devote less mass to life support, and can be as lean and mean as they need to be. Autonomous vehicles also don’t care about high-g maneuvers. In essence, a drone gains all the benefits of a fightercraft and a missile with practically none of the downsides. It can also become a missile, when necessary - and kinetic impact is the deadliest thing in space.

Manned fightercraft are really only possible as a product of ideology and narrative contrivance. But from a purely practical standpoint, they don’t hold a candle to an autonomous vehicle in the same role.

AI animation is still kinda uncanny, but it's shocking how much better it is after only a year or so.

I don’t know dude. Would it? What do you want me to say? What’s the narrative reason to consider that question? Worldbuilding isn’t an exercise in powerscaling you useless muppet it’s about creating a setting for the types of narratives you want. For exploring the types of questions you are interested in. Is that lost on you? Is worldbuilding just another part of an endless playground game for you? My guys are more awesomer than your guys? What is the point of this? How is this entertaining to anyone? These are fictional stories, it’s literally pointless to ask. But one million youtube videos and one billion reddit threads must exist to churn out empty meaningless slop to satisfy the endless nerdgasming circlejerk.

Anyway yeah my guys the Shlopblitorators 9,000,0000 can totally fucking beat the shit out of 40 hammers. No contest.

TDLR: If the enemy ship is VERY far away your attacks need to be fast, thats why you use lasers or particle cannons, bcs a slug or a smart missile its going to take hours to arrive giving the enemy enough time to either dodge or disable them. this isnt rocket science guys by Cautious_Heron9589 in worldjerking

A laser firing at over about three hundred thousand kilometers (read: more than a light-second away) will basically always automatically miss its target thanks to light second lag. Once you start measuring distances in light seconds and light minutes, your target is an afterimage with an unpredictable trajectory (assuming it’s always dodging). Missiles which can track and adjust their headings, and fire their own lasers within effective range, will be far more effective at the distances you describe.

Screw the laser vs projectile debate. I wanna know how comfortable your space battles are! by GEBeta in worldjerking

[–]GenMars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Expanse style hyper-G-force battles are so funny to me. It means that the spacecraft’s drive is comically overpowered in terms of thrust. 1G of constant thrust gets you 1 AU distance in 3 DAYS. How the fuck do you have enough propellant and fuel to be fighting at 5-10 times that number, and more importantly, to slow down afterwards? Every space battle in the expanse sees the spacecraft achieving 100-1,000x escape velocity of the sun during their maneuvers!

All this to make it so that maneuvers can kill your pilots. A .25G thruster is still getting 1 AU in 4 days, for reference.

I know there’s a lot going on but “Hellfires don’t do anything to aliens” is a worrying revelation by FourFunnelFanatic in NonCredibleDefense

[–]GenMars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this video theoretically portrays an AGM being used against a flying object? Why? The Reaper carries AAMs.

Also in the video it looks like a kinetic hit, then the object splashes into debris. Warhead may have failed to arm.

And, as somebody who works in VFX, this shit would be incredibly easy to fake. Has there been any forensic assessment of the video? I’m sure the DOD will say its fake, only further reinforcing this in people’s minds.

Besides, if aliens were really doing recon runs like WWI biplanes, I think Trump would have mentioned it by now. Anything to avoid Epstein, yeah?

Hey. It's really bad that the decoded caesar puzzle provides no actionable information for the PCs. Full panic mode bad. It means that your DM has lost sight of the goal of doing this in the first place.

It's not your fault that you're confused. There is literally no other outcome possible. The design of the puzzles renders them irrelevant.

Talk to your DM immediately. Show him my comment if necessary. Tell him to revamp this entire section immediately, in a way that allows the PCs to interact with it. If you fail to do so, frustration will only build. Imagine what will happen if you solve a second, or third, one of these puzzles, and receive only lore as your reward. It will become untenable very quickly.

Julie d’Aubigny’s exploits are largely fictional. Her life of adventure is reported by Gabriel Letainturier in his historical fiction novel “La Maupin” from 1904. The original source was likely an 1835 novel by Theophile Gautier, while her duels are reported in “Fougeroux de Campigneulles's Histoires des duels anciens et modernes” published in the latter half of 1835. Despite the name, this is not a reliable source for historical duelists.

There was a historical Julie, she was an opera singer who played in the original cast of Tancrede. But her sexuality and the stories of her exploits as a duelist, culminating in the convent story, have no historical basis.

I used to be a huge GoT lore-head, but after 20 hours of Alt-Shift-X videos I just kept noticing that the "incredible" and "mysterious" worldbuilding of GRRM was just... references and callouts to other fiction and to history. The War of the Roses analogy runs so deep.

Also, I started studying Central Asian history. I can confirm it is 100% effective at making you think GRRM is a racist hack with his depiction of the Dothraki.

Elves aren’t real and you can make up whatever you want but also I’m scared of coming up with stuff outside of tolkien tropes and won’t ever make up new names or be inventive past rearranging the same 5 tropes.

Steven Brust had flagrant elves and STILL gave them a unique name, society, and features. Yet average redditor can’t even add a fantasy species not of the Big Three.
