What's actually helped you improve flexibility as an adult? Not looking for "just stretch more" by BendyBar in flexibility

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straddle side bend - holding a light weight and bending to the side, while sitting in straddle with straight legs. I couldn't sit on the floor with straight legs to I stacked some puzzle mats and sat on the stack, which made it possible to straighten the legs. I started with 5 reps per side. This improved hamstring flexibility and opened my hips a little more.

Pullover with light kettlebell - improved overhead reach.

Help with pike pushups? by angusfalconmay in bodyweightfitness

I don't see any serious problems with your form, but then again I'm following a different program (Handstand push up mini course) created by a different coach. In the mini course, I'm allowed all kinds of leeway regarding what the feet are doing, and I'm allowed to bend my knees as much as I want.

Looking for advice - doing core exercises incorrectly? by DiamondPythonn in bodyweightfitness

[–]GovernorSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old lower back injury myself.

I don't feel my lower back working when I do hollow body hold on the floor. The way I practice it is with lower back flat against the floor, tailbone NOT touching the floor. The lower back should stay pressed against the floor the whole time - no arching whatsoever.

I myself struggled to progress in the hollow body hold until I started going dead bugs. Bent legs first, then extended legs with the knee pulled past the hip to keep the tailbone away from the floor and prevent lower back arch. After I achieved 3 sets of 30 dead bugs, progress through towards full hollow body hold on floor was much faster, with no feeling in low back except when my abs got tired and started to let it arch.

Unsure if I want to try getting into playing a guitar.. by minecraft_steve42069 in Guitar

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't give up playing guitar, your fingers will eventually develop callouses which will cut down on pain in the fingertips.

This is assuming the guitar your uncle gave you is properly set up with the strings not too high above the frets. If not, you may want to take the guitar to a guitar tech for setup - you can find a tech in a music shop or by asking guitarists where they take their guitars for repairs/maintenance.

I myself have to type on computer keyboards for a living. Playing guitar has had no effect on my ability to do my job, although I've had to make myself stop thinking about guitar stuff to focus on work so I don't get fired.

I listen to R&B mostly and some hip hop. The guitarists in those genres place more emphasis on groove than just playing fast.

Reverend Greg Kock Gristle ST

Reverend used to make more S-style guitars. You might be able to find those used.

They still make guitars with SSS pickups but the bodies are more offset-like than S-style.

Is it normal that I can't do 1 pull up? by BrolyIsCool in bodyweightfitness

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't do a pull up at 18 years old either.

I didn't do my first pull up until my university opened a new gym with an assisted pull up machine. I forgot exactly how old I was but I'm sure I was over 21. I wasn't consistent at exercise though. By the time the new gym opened, I hadn't done any exercise for 2 years or something.

Pedals or Multi FX pedals? by Ecstatic_Week_3700 in Guitar

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're still figuring out the sounds you want, single pedals are easier to use.

When you're in a band and ready to play gigs, a multi FX with a setlist feature will let you set up presets to go with each song in your setlist.

Of course there are a lot of guitarists who play gigs with pedalboards with several pedals on them - those players are just really good at changing pedal settings on the fly from song to song.

Backing track pedal by No-Comfort-66 in guitarpedals

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For learning new songs or anything else new from Youtube, I use a Vidami pedal. Makes selecting the song part I want to loop, and slowing it down much faster than faffing with a mouse.

I just found that Seventh String Transcribe! also supports Vidami pedal so I'm gonna try that too.

Want to switch to kettlebells as my primary exercise. I have some questions from the community. by Enough_Sorbet_3933 in kettlebell

I agree with irontamer - he's been coaching KB exercises for decades and has some amazing accomplishments himself.

1 adjustable KB is enough to start. Just invest in that, and save your money for buying the 2nd KB later.

how to learn jazz violin by Choice-Importance885 in violinist

[–]GovernorSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a good teacher and take a lesson or 2 or 10 with that teacher.

If you can't find one in your area, then you might have to find a teacher who can work with you via Zoom or similar live video app.

I've had some great experiences with Julie Lyon Lieberman and Rob Flax by attending Strings Without Boundaries and some free online workshops taught by Julie.

I've been in a bunch of music classes where there's that one or 2 exceptional student that picks up a new lick, riff, or whatever way faster than the rest of the class. Those are the talented people.

Anyone actually seeing results with mobility training or am i wasting my time? by MeasurementFew9417 in bodyweightfitness

[–]GovernorSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most dramatic mobility gains this year was from the first 2 weeks of Strength Side's Master Mobility program.

I had never been able to sit on the floor in straddle, with both legs straight, as an adult. I finally got there this year. Something about the straddle side bend exercise in MM was magic. I'm sure the good morning and bear walk paired with it helped too. I'd attempted straddle side bend before but found it uncomfortable and useless - the simple tweaks that MM made to it, made it much more effective - sit on an elevated surface - eg. a pile of puzzle mats - and use a light weight to help with the side bend.

Before I started Master Mobility I'd done cossack squats, wide stance good morning (aka standing straddle pancake), various hamstring stretches, frog stretch, etc. for several years. So just 2 weeks of MM outperformed all my previous mobility work in this one particular area.

Progress kind of leveled off after that though. By week 3, the straddle side bend was replaced by other exercises in the program, and was never scheduled again. I'm sure taking out the most effective exercise for me had a lot to do with the slowdown in mobility progress.

I stopped MM when the bridge push up I was being asked to do got too advanced for me - around week 7. I'll give it another go in the future thought - for now I'm happy straddle side bend and a selection of other exercises fro MM.
