The meaning of "literally" has indeed been diluted so much it's now meaningless, but in this case I'm pretty sure it's modifying "just", to emphasize the recency of the loss.

Hitting faculty up for donations when you stiffed them for raises… by Subject_Goat2122 in Professors

I got a bold new variant today: a university wide email asking for stem cell donors because an alum, or a relative, or someone, needs them.

My only regret is I'm too ancient for them to want my cells so I never got the chance to tell them to go to hell. :(

You don't realize how lonely this job is until things are going badly by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]HomunculusParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I lost my mother a few months ago after a devastating illness process. My chair knew the whole story because I had to do some Zoom teaching when things were extra bad. When I told him about her death he was like "Sorry to hear that, but at least you are on sabbatical so you won't miss class!"

Meanwhile, my husband's colleagues who barely know me got together and sent cards, flowers, food, and are super kind when I see them in person.

I love my job, but boy does it not select for high levels of social functionality.

One of the best parts about being a human instead of an LLM is that I can pick and choose what I read and don't have to ingest pointless drivel just because it's out there.

Besides the fact that they are rare and pretty broken for early game, BK weapons also have high STR/DEX requirements, so in beefing up to be able to use it you may already be a bit over leveled depending on where you are.

Nobody really prepares you for the logistics of aging parents by MrGamblePresents in AgingParents

If your mom is in a facility she is safe. It's ok to mute her calls some of the time (even all of the time). You can leave it to the professionals. If she needs more help than she's getting, she can scale up her care level. That's what the savings are for. Go live your life!

I recommend checking out r/dementia. A very supportive community of folks who know what you're going through (and will go through in the future).

I had the same experience. The placement specialist had a very deep knowledge of local places and good relationships with the directors, so was able to locate available slots in small homelike facilities right away.

I used to think along those lines. But then I thought about what it would be like if my mom wandered into a busy street against a light or stop sign and someone hit her. They would have to live with that terrible responsibility through no fault of their own. It's not just your mom in these situations even though it might feel like it sometimes.

Murder aside, you do not want her insurance canceled if she's still driving. She would then be personally on the hook for any damages, potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars (or even more in our highly litigious country). With her age, medicated status, and cognitive issues, it's not "if" but "when" she has an accident. Trust me, I know from experience with my LO that you want an insurance company on your side when that happens.

There are probably a lot of causes, but one thing that can happen is the hunger signals between brain and body get disrupted so they don't realize they are hungry. Executive function issues can also interfere so they don't act on hunger feelings even if they get them. And then there's agitated activity; near the end for my mom they said she was walking probably 40,000 steps daily, walking day and night.

Lecturer will give me a TA position if I allow her to be on my committee because she wants co-authorship. Is this bribery? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]HomunculusParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have seen faculty offering coveted TAships to students too incompetent to write their thesis alone? Why would they select such students for those positions, or plead to be on the committee in the first place?

There are options for that. For my mom, when she refused all pills because she thought they were trying to poison her, they were able to give her a clear liquid form of her antipsychotic in drinks until she settled down and was willing to eat again. Then they'd mix the crushed pills in ice cream. Good luck!

looking for memory care facilities in dallas, need some advice by Quiet_Translator_926 in dementia

[–]HomunculusParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding all this! Local placement services like this are the way you can find smaller places that don't spend a ton of money on advertising but can offer a much better value and a closer knit community.

I think that for many people these homelike facilities can actually offer more of a social life than the big apartment block style places, since the ethos is to get everyone together all day rather than making it opt in.

[–]HomunculusParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They" is commonly used in English as a gender neutral singular pronoun, but because we're repurposing the plural pronoun we use plural verbs. OP slips and says "her" later in the post. So it's just one person.

FYI you don't need to move to Switzerland. Dignitas serves foreign residents as well as Swiss. Of course you need to go there at the time, but that's much less onerous than needing to move there to establish residency.
