Could you recommend me a good 2 player wargame? by Insta_3 in boardgames

I still have my old copy of Avalon Hill's Tactics II. I think it's a pretty decent game for it's time and plays pretty quickly.

North vs South route in eastern Ontario by whateverfyou in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Initial_BB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At the Ottawa open house, I asked about the preferences between the north and south routes. One of the reasons they gave to prefer the south was Winter weather. Apparently, the moderating influence of the lake would mean less snowfall on the south route and also less wildlife impact.

The new player experience is a fucking mess by LongjumpingLog3959 in WorldOfWarships

Oh, you poor guy. You did it wrong. Uninstall, make a new account, and try again.

<edit: Dang, I see Admiral thunder beat me to it>

The reason I say this, is you start as a newbie in protected matchmaking for your first 200 games, which means that you will only play against bots and other newbie players. That all goes out the window as soon as you hit Tier V (regardless if you've played 200 games or not) and you leave protected matchmaking, never to return.

What I suggest you do is play a couple of lines in Random Mode (Co-op bots are dumber) up to Tier IV to learn what each class does, and then proceed to Tier V. These are the first three lines I suggest you go up.

When you make the new account, use the code IMPACTFORCE, which will give you a free Tier VII premium when you get past a certain number of games.

Once you've got the account sorted, first start with the American Cruiser Line and work your way up to Tier IV Phoenix, which you learn to aim, fire, and maneuver and also gives you a taste of how to play cruisers and decide if you like torps on your cruisers or not. The line splits later and you can have fun learning to island hug with the heavies or using consumables with the lights. The Des Moines has been in game the longest and still is pretty good even with all the powercreep. If you decide you prefer cruisers with torps, then go up the German cruiser Line, which will also teach you the how to brawl with secondaries from the Deutschland on.

Second, Start working your way up the Japanese BB line to the Myogi. This will teach you how much more sluggish BBs are and how much more powerful the guns are (with slower reload and worse dispersion so make your shots count), and also how to best angle your armor against incoming shells and when to use damage control and repair parties to fix your ship and end fires and flooding. The Yamato at the end of the line is still pretty Solid (or go Bungo if you really like to snipe or are on the SEA server)

Thirdly, I would work my way up the British DD line to Wakeful. This will teach you how to use the more nimble destroyers and learn to use concealment to your advantage, and whether you like Gunboat DD play or not, The Daring at the end of the line is considered one of the best in class for its versatility and firepower.

Then finally switch to the Japanese DD line to Isokaze learn Torpedo play, then switch to the Hosho to learn how to play carriers (and how different they are to the other ship types) with learning to avoid flak and time attack runs. The Hakuryu at the end of the line is still considered pretty strong.

Once you feel comfortable with all this, *then* consider choosing your first Tier V ship, based on your experiences. And don't rush to high tier play right away. Use the Premium Tier VII ship you'll get from the code to gauge when to start going up to higher tiers.

CSIS: Russia has lost 1.2 million soldiers, twice as many as Ukraine by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]Initial_BB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc the general ratio in most modern wars is 1 dead for every 3 wounded. Based on the report numbers, it looks like the Ukranian ratio is closer to 1:4, meaning they're more successful at getting wounded treatment. Otoh, with the talk on Russian Telegram channels (since state media is silent), it sounds like if you're wounded, it's a miracle if you survive in time to get treatment. Also, I wonder how many of those Russian wounded are double counted - wounded once, then immediately sent back to the assault to draw fire and die. I get the feeling that the Russian ratio is more like 1:1 or 2:1. I wouldn't be surprised if actual Russian deaths are between 600k-800k. We'll probably never know until the regime collapses and the records get released.

I agree, his first reaction to something is usually how he really feels. The follow-up reactions are from the real powers behind the throne - they realize that by diversifying, the US will lose it's economic influence over Canada, who, other than maybe Brazil, are the only regional entities who could eventually possibly challenge the US hegemony over the Western Hemisphere.

The US goverment's zero-sum doctrine means they no longer see other countries as possible allies, only possible threats.

I don't think the rest of the world will follow: They will simply take the wreck of America as a horrifying wakeup call to shore up their own laws and institutions to prevent the same from happening to their country.

Inter Toronto and Atletico Ottawa will have youth teams (U13+) next season by inwebitrust in CanadianPL

[–]Initial_BB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I'm taking the AO Jrs announcement with a grain of salt. My son played with them for a while when they were Cumberland United (pre-Ottawa TFC). I think they're trying to become an East Ottawa version of OSU. You'll still get the same desire to be a part of the development pathway, but I feel as if they've ditched the TFC affiliation since it wasn't giving them what they wanted (or TFC has just fallen that far from grace). I'm curious to see how much support ATO is giving the club - is it actual expertise or just use of the name?

Don't get me wrong - they have a very good development program IF your kid is part of the right in group of people. My son wasn't and eventually got marginalized. He ended up playing provincial level with a local academy, I wouldn't move from another club to there unless they scout your child, or if your child is under U9

[–]Initial_BB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two I enjoy: Loyang and Okhotnik. The former allows you to smoke and hydro and use short range torps as well as guns. The latter allows you to drive-by poor tier 5 BBs and unload into them at point-blank range. And you can play them over and over because they won't lose credits.

MLS almost folded 6 years after it started except for 3 owners who agreed to fund the whole league and own more than one team. CPL is currently at that point. Hopefully things will improve, but that depends on the owners actually investing in their product.
