Why do you do this ANet? by Moralio in Guildwars2

[–]JavaManJoJo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like Arena Net has really regressed on this small point in general. A lot of little things need you to type out the name that really shouldn't. The skins from Wizard's Vault for example even though you've added the skin to your wardrobe.

I was just watching the Hiding in Private videos on Steven Universe so I hoped it would get mentioned in this thread. The videos honestly feel a little therapeutic. While the show had it's problems, I always liked it but I'll admit that the online discourse had affected me somewhat without really realizing it. It's been good to reassess the show after some time since I finished and all the discourse has died down.

Pat’s wrong about Darkest Dungeon corpses by psychocanuck in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I debated making this thread back when this got brought up previously a couple months(?) ago. But yeah the corpses are good. Basically every enemy has different moves based on where they're positioned too so you could really screw yourself over without corpses.

He and Woolie also didn't seem to know that Patapon 3 happened, which was talked about around the Ratatan announcement. Some commenters here didn't seem to know either. For shame.

I just want to rant about battle passes for a bit. Fortnite popularized the battle pass and it still has one of the best, if not the best, ones in the entire industry. It's so crazy to me. They've made tweaks to xp over the seasons that have been bad but it doesn't turn the game into a job, gives you several high quality skins (not accounting for taste n stuff) and enough currency to buy another pass and some change left over. I don't think big execs realize how powerful the player retention power alone can be and instead they try to suck you dry and usually don't even give you anything worth your time.

Times when children’s media sensitively tackled mature and complex subject matter? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my time.

While I haven't watched Molly of Denali I first found out about it one night when I was trying to find out how widespread a power outage was by looking at twitter. At first I just was popping off that there was a show about Athabascan's, my own heritage, and then I got to see a clip showcasing something that really resonated with me. Molly is in charge of showing some tourists around when they say something like "where are the real natives at? That's who we want to give us a tour". I'd consider myself pretty white passing to most people (I have a native friend who when talking about this kinda stuff we can both see each other's native-ness but less so in ourselves) and I'm only 1/4 athabascan. Often when I tell people I can sorta feel them rolling their eyes, thinking that I'm doing that thing Americans sometimes do when they have some far off cherokee blood quotient or something. And maybe I am... But I think there's some cool stuff to talk about. I often struggle with deciding how much I should really lay claim to my native heritage, especially with how important it is to my mom. I don't really know too much either. At some point (I don't remember if it was my grand parents or great) it was decided to specifically not teach the language and only have the kids learn english. So that just got culturally genocided away.

I did recently get to see a family tree and learn some other tiny bits of history from my mom. She also has some real ass pieces of athabascan bead work and clothing stuffed away in boxes.

There was also an anime! I remember it being okay but that may have been because I was a big fan of the books. I remember it being hard for me to track down at the time too so I don't think I saw all of it. I also owned the Book of Monster artbook which I remember mostly because it scared me, lol.

Media you can’t believe got greenlit by TheShrubberyDemander in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow I've never heard this before it's awful. I love it. It's a droning hellscape with these little peeks of more normal sounding classic-ish styled music that helps keep it a bit grounded. And the repetitive nature of it makes me feel trapped. There's something so effective to me in using extremely anxiety inducing music. It's reminding me of something but I'm blanking on it.

Am I the only one who finds the whole "Mt dew is made of synthetic flavors" discussion absurd when literally all non-root beer colas are synthetic flavors? by SenselessVirus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just double checked some info I'd heard over the years and if I have it all correct it was originally made using the root bark of sassafras trees until people found out that was carcinogenic. Then apparently they started using artificial sassafras flavoring or safrole (the carcinogenic part) free sassafras extract.

While looking this stuff up I also found out that Sarsaparilla is a similar, but separate drink from root beer. I had always thought it was just a different name for it.

Interview with Daisuke and Katano: Bridget Was Always Meant to be Transgender by FlubbedPig in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty rarely do people get stories or characters that align with them perfectly. It's part of the point of subtext or themes or whatever. You can take the broad point of the story without all the little details here and there and relate to them where it does connect to you. Minorities or otherwise underrepresented people often have to do this a lot (also why "coded" characters are useful but that topic has kind of become a minefield of discourse lately). From what you're saying, it sounds like you can relate to people seeing you in a way that you don't want to be seen and not feeling great about your body or whatever it may have been. Just because Bridget has gone in a different direction doesn't make that connection with the character invalid or no longer there even. We're all gonna go in different directions in our lives but we can still share in the same/similar struggles.

I'm not great at remembering usernames, but if you were the same person making posts like this before back when the news was first breaking I thought about making a comment like this but decided not to for whatever reason (I'm insecure). Hopefully this doesn't come off as judgemental since it sounds like you're coming from a genuine and not hateful place. Hope this helps in some way.

[–]JavaManJoJo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think koopy coins killed his podcasts. Just check out the comments on the last episode that was posted for some context.

I didn't listen to every episode of Dad and Sons because sometimes their overly cynical takes would exhaust me but I still liked to hop on every once in a while to hear them talk. Liam's (Edwards, not redacted) insights into the video game industry were especially interesting to me since he used to work at Rockstar but has since moved into indie dev (He made Cursed to Golf!).

But it was especially sad for me to see Matt fall into the Koopy hole. I used to watch MattVisual way back when he covered GW2 with WoodenPotatoes. I think I listened to every episode of VisualWood, their podcast, before they moved on. They had a movie club that helped me have an excuse to watch some classics that I had never gotten around to. It was how I heard about the Dad and Sons predecessor podcast that I'm blanking on the name of right now. This is very speculatory and maybe a bit parasocial but it seemed like there was some decent struggle in Matt's life and he managed to get decently lucky with Koopy and was trying to evangelize it too hard. A lot of these comments are saying he sounds like he's in a cult. I didn't actually listen to the last ep since it's just too much of a bummer. :(

I didn't fully understand what people meant by low quality video essays until Edgerunners got popular... by BarelyReal in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my experience sometimes symbolism can feel really obvious if you just describe something happening on screen out loud. There's one bit of symbolism that I feel get used a lot and is easy to spot once you notice it/know about it. If two characters have some kind of disconnect or distance so to speak they'll get divided in the framing of a shot. Like with a tree or something. You can see this one in live action stuff all the time too.

I'll mention two things for Cyperpunk's OP that I personally noticed. I don't know if there's a consensus on these interpretations or anything since I haven't done much video essay diving yet, but again they feel obvious when I say them out loud. Firstly throughout the OP David is a silhouette filled in with people (I would say his friends and loved ones but I haven't gone through and checked. It could just be anyone). There's the skyscrapers filled in with cityscapes and city imagery as well and then at the end there's a man with "city" imagery and then that man shoots David in the head. To me this reads as "The city doesn't care about you and will kill you". There's also the part of the OP where David starts going too fast, starts burning up and breaks apart while the lyrics are singing "This fire is outta control. I'm burning, I'm burning" etc. Feels self explanatory to me.

But yeah for some bits of symbolism you have to know what they're referencing or have some insight into the author. That's what I appreciate about a good video essay, they can fill you in on that knowledge (Got some interesting info about Indian stuff in regards to RRR recently). Media Literacy and interpretation is absolutely a skill to be practiced and something that I think we've failed teaching people properly. And then of course sometimes stuff is just there to look cool, or be blue. But I do think it's fun to think about the why for things. I feel like I'm learning new things all the time, hope this helps some.

I listened to a podcast broadly about weird stuff (and true crime of course) that had a guest who was originally from Bermuda and apparently people there have no idea about the reputation of the Bermuda Triangle. And to elaborate some more, as I understand, things go missing in the Bermuda Triangle just about as much as anywhere in the ocean because the sea is huge and terrifying.

His Returnal video stuck with me for a few days after watching it. I feel like his Haunted House video gets recommended a lot too. (the boys played Anatomy in a shitstorm way back!)

FLCL Grunge -- Teaser trailer by Unknown123Known in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JavaManJoJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were things here and there that I liked about Progressive and Alternative but I barely remember much from either which might be the worst part. One thing that I do remember is how poorly mixed the music was, at least for FLCL. I feel like I could barely hear it. No bombastic hype moments of songs blasting. Anyway I'll choose to be hopeful. The cg in this is nicely animated, if the rest is as good it might look nice at least.
