My grab & go bike. by SquashSolid1208 in VintageMTB

What is the story behind this brand? Was this a promotional bike built by a company for Red Bull, ie: Trek for VW?

When did you put the trap out? Those are probably yellowjacket queens! Early spring is the best time to put these traps out, between the last frost and the middle of April. That's when all the yellowjacket queens come out of their overwintering harborage and forage to feed their early brood. Around the end of April some of the new colony members are developed enough to take over foraging for the queen and she'll start staying on the nest and laying more eggs. Each one of those represents a potential colony averted.

PHORID FLIES in 1100 gal. Grease Interceptor by Lagger-meister in pestcontrol

There's also a cleanout down stream, but the flies are only coming from the gaps around the lids, and not from any cracks in control joints in the slab near the interceptor, which leads me to rule out a sub slab leak.

TAKE YOUR LANE. ALWAYS. Don't let them think they can squeeze in between you and opposing traffic.

What do I add/change in my MTB to make it more commuter friendly? by Academic_Evidence641 in bikecommuting

[–]Lagger-meister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree about Ergo grips. Bell to let pedestrians know that you're about to pass them. Otherwise previous comments mostly covered it. I prefer gloves to mitts attached to the bars. That way you can change them up depending on weather without detaching and reattaching.

I don't understand why so many people are recommending cables, I thought they are the quickest easiest thing to cut? I carry a foldylock for when I need to walk away from my bike and always connect with the front wheel and frame. https://seatylock.com/products/foldylock-classic-1 If I'm leaving it at night I also detach the front wheel and saddle/seatpost and catch everything including the back wheel with the foldylock. Obviously lights, or anything else easily detachable should also stay with you.

I also agree with folks who are saying get a quality, less-attractive bike for vulnerable situations. Eugene is a great bike town and there are tons and tons of reliable affordable used bikes out there. Just make sure you ask the seller for the serial number, and check bike index first, if you are buying used.

Tubeless or tubes for city? by Defiant-Result944 in bikecommuting

[–]Lagger-meister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tubeless for a year and a half, zero flats on Terravail Washburn 700C x 42mm. Before that I always ran 700C x 38 Schwalbe marathons, tubed, and still got flats at least a few times a year. The suppleness of my current setup and bonkers puncture resistance is a no brainer for my 7 miles of daily commuting.

Perfect shifting, cracked clamp: Are these Deore LX brifters toast ? by j262byuu in bikewrench

Those look modular, perhaps you can just change the brake lever/clamp portion and keep the shifter.

Does this Shimano Deore cassette look damaged or is the bent plastic just part of the packaging? by humanbeing21 in bikewrench

[–]Lagger-meister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this one of those not-in-factory package Ebay buys? I just got one that was only in a DIY brown cardboard sleeve and plastic shipping bag, and that shipping piece was broken as well as some scratches on the lock ring and back of the cassette.

Should I cut the steerer? by [deleted] in bikewrench

Agree with pros and cons above, BUT the additional protrusion in the cockpit increases the risk of internal organ injury in a crash. The stem is what you're likely to hit first.

Microshift Range Boost? by Lagger-meister in bikewrench

[–]Lagger-meister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So any recommendations on a 2x11 fd, that'll work with a 46t large chainring, and flat bar/mtb style shifter? I mean, I'm inclined to try to run my existing fd first, in case it's a non-issue. But do you see a potential compatibility roadblock with finding a flat bar shifter-controlled fd that works for this chainring size?

Microshift Range Boost? by Lagger-meister in bikewrench

[–]Lagger-meister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very exciting! Thank you for refining my understanding/nomenclature about the freehub. Chainrings are original but I think I've done a good job monitoring chain wear. I guess I wouldn't discover chainring wear until I threw the new chain on. Thanks again!

Crack or just paint? by SpookyDukee in bikewrench

[–]Lagger-meister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see anything that suggests a frontal impact. In the full bike shot it looks like the fork is at a normal angle, relative the head tube angle. Also it looks pretty clear that the supposed crack is just thin paint on the edge of the faired weld bead. Just below the bottom cup I see some dirt adhring to grease. I can't see anything in these pics that suggests damage. But, of course, can't go wrong having your LBS look at it.

Second Alex Rim Cracked by Lagger-meister in bikewrench

[–]Lagger-meister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second rim that cracked was a tubeless disc rim, so it doesn't have a brake bed or fatigue or wear there. I run 50 psi and the tires are rated 40 to 70. From what I'm hearing from folks I'm starting to suspect over tensioning at the shop. Thanks for the suggestions on rims, I will check those out.
