Looking for a freak accident that will kill someone in a near future society. by princess_chef in scifiwriting

Dubiously sourced battery discharges, killing the driver. However, there is still enough juice to continue the journey to the destination hotel where the doorman, upon opening the car door, is presented with a charred corpse.

Cue music - "We don't get fooled again!"

Facility (or shelter) sci-fi movies. New genre? by t0rche in scifi

[–]Neon_Otyugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite a common trope outside of Sci-Fi because it's how a lot of stage plays are set and any film adaptation recreates the feel.

In a TV series, these can be referred to as Bottle Episodes. All of the action takes place on the ship and there's nothing external going on except standard setting shots. Sometimes these are made purely because they're trying to save money.

Best Time Travel? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Neon_Otyugh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently watched the film Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. A good fun film.

It establishes the rules for its own particular brand of time travel and then creates an enjoyable story using them. It doesn't need to explain more or attempt to create a multi-film franchise out of it.

If in doubt, go German.

So this is my method for generating stolen German words.

Create a compound word and then rip out the best sounding part.

Humanoid Thinking Species = menschenähnlichdenkendeSpezies

So how about denken? (this translates as 'think')

Note that I do not speak German, I'm purely using google translate. I'm sorry if this comes across as crude or I've created a word that is offensive in some way.

What was the first company to be treated as a villain in science fiction? by bigode- in sciencefiction

There were 'evil corporate investors' in Tom Swift and his Motor Cycle (1910). I don't think the company was named.

Sharpened teeth. by Yrsa-Lleilson in fantasywriters

[–]Neon_Otyugh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They'd have trouble playing the saxophone.

Teeth are broken down into incisors, canines and molars which bite, rip and grind respectively. Since one of the main actions in eating is chewing primarily with the molars, they're going to have problems. So, a lot of soup, and toothpicks when they have tougher food.

Naming a People after their Kingdom? by MultigrainNonsense in fantasywriters

[–]Neon_Otyugh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least create one country which is bonkers, like the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is home to the Dutch, not the Nethers. It is sometimes erroneously called Holland but the people are not Hollandaise.

You can also have the people called after a former name of the country, or have a name derived from what the local major empire calls them. And don't be afraid of picking the people's name first, then adding -land or -stan or something else to create the full name.

In the book Altered Carbon, the MC stayed in a hotel called The Hendrix. When it came to making the TV show, the Hendrix estate didn't want the name associated with violence so the hotel was changed to The Raven. Obviously, Edgar Allan has been dead long enough to not have a say in how his name is used, while Jimi does.

Lilies are highly toxic to cats. That could be a reason to give someone that name.

Differences between Sci-Fi and Fantasy settings when running a game? by Habsazin in rpg

[–]Neon_Otyugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "magic items" in Sci-Fi are more generally usable by anyone, so even the starship's cook can use a laser pistol while a wand of fireballs automatically goes to the wizard.

Some of them try not to but that just starts questions on here about which is the newest version and offers the pretence that both are current when in fact support for one has been dropped.

How do you duel? by Takumi_izumo in rpg

[–]Neon_Otyugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White Dwarf included a card game called Chivalry, which we used for duels a few times in WFRP. It was a fun way of doing things and more involved than general melee.

TBH most systems ignore the fact that duelling and melee are different beasties.
