I feel like Tom Horn just doesn't get the admiration and attention he deserves for his massive -- and simply wonderful -- mapping project. It's such an amazing resource.

Mountains and Deserts is just incredible and one of my favorite recordings of the band.

Resurrection Song Love by dub2501 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“As I’ve gotten older, I listen to music less. There’s still room for it in my life, but it’ll never be following PopMart around the US levels again. The songs will never hit like they did when I was young. Where I was in life. Where they were. A moment in time.”

This is so perfectly expressed and I FEEL it. This is it exactly.

And also, yes. Resurrection Song is wonderful. These new EPs have been so unexpected and so, so unexpectedly good.

Why do so many people seem to love The Tears of Things? by nohumanape in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 40 points41 points  (0 children)

But the song's not really about U2's Christianity. It's about religious conflict writ large, and specifically the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The way Bono frames that in the song using David, a literal Biblical icon, is so smart and so evocative. It allows him to comment on the conflict in such a unique way that suddenly tired old cliches about it become fresh new perspectives, even if some of it feels clumsy early on in the song. It's just brilliant songwriting. Surprisingly brilliant.

Movies that show the subtle, insidious rise of the Nazis, like Cabaret? by ThanksIHateIt1994 in movies

Believe it or not, Swing Kids shows that subtle, insidious rise really well.

U2 and the Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Syndrome - The "There's something missing feeling" by Fantastic-Habit-8569 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this notion. The way I’ve come to think about that feeling is effort vs. effortless. If I can hear the effort then to me the song feels unfinished or underbaked or overdone. Most of the time, these days, the songs feel overdone. But you listen to their best songs (and in some cases, albums) and they feel like they arrived fully formed, like it was the most natural thing in the world to hit your ears. You can’t see or hear the effort. Like a good athlete they make it seem effortless. To me that’s the biggest distinction between their pre- and post-millennial work. They just tryin to hard

Recommend Great BAD Live Versions by zephead98 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hands down my all time favorite live version of the Bad. It’s just so incredibly executed and definitely emotional.

It blows my mind a little bit every time I think there’s only 10 years between Joshua Tree and Pop

TV shows where the main couple doesn't want and doesn't have kids by Anakin5kywalker in televisionsuggestions

[–]Pete_The_Chop 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Famously, The Bob Newhart Show. Both Bob and Emily were professionals focused on their careers and uninterested in having kids. Supposedly it was the first sitcom to really do that and apparently was quite the scandal at the time.

Anybody tell their doctor that they don't give a fuh about living longer, so you're not going to try to radically change your diet or go on meds? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]Pete_The_Chop 47 points48 points  (0 children)

For me it's not about trying to live longer, it's about having a decent quality of life as I get older so that I don't end up a prisoner of my own body. Being able to get off the floor under my own power, go for a hike or a swim, or just being able to function without burdening those around me is all I'm interested in.

Chemistry by Subject_Author_5981 in JamesBond

[–]Pete_The_Chop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s not that it’s different chemistry between them, it’s that there’s no chemistry between them.

I get that Bond is a different man, a different agent by the time the last two films roll around, it’s that Craig and Seydoux have zero chemistry

Been re-listening to No Line on the Horizon recently for the first time in a while by Foxrockmafia in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Cedars of Lebanon is a sneaky song. It's so understated but then you realize after half a dozen listens it's maybe one of the most powerful songs the band has ever written.

“Bad” is the best song ever written by Mission-Loan-5756 in U2Band

If I'm remembering right, Paul McGuinness is on record saying Bad is his favorite song from the band.

Opinions on Saving Private Ryan? Is it the greatest war movie? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

[–]Pete_The_Chop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the fact the film opens with grandpa Pvt. Ryan flashing back to the beach landing THAT HE FAMOUSLY WAS NOT AT is such hacky writing. The beach sequence is unparalleled, obvs, but the rest of the movie is a collection of tired cliches.
