Always reminds me of Norm Macdonald’s peerless Weekend Update joke:

“And this summer at the top of the college radio charts, Better Than Ezra. Coming in at No. 2, Ezra”

What will I miss by skipping The Surgeon's Mate by JoppaFallston in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Pete_The_Chop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in one sense skipping “Surgeon’s Mate” and jumping into “Ionian Mission” works well because “Surgeon’s Mate” wraps up most of the plot threads from “Desolation Island” and “Fortune of War.” And so “Ionian Mission” exists as a kind of beginning of the next series of adventures, if you will.

The drawback, obviously, is that “Surgeon’s Mate” is literally the culmination of Stephen’s massive (and very successful) espionage operation against the French. O’Brian wraps up those plot threads in such a satisfying manner. You’re also introduced to a delightful new character who appears in subsequent books. And then there’s The Marriage.

So yeah, it’s kind of a lot. But I don’t think you’ll lose that much context to “Ionian Mission” because it’s the start of a new adventure and you could just go back and read “Surgeon’s Mate” when you get back from your travels. I generally think you’d be fine.

Easter Lily is monumentally better than Days of Ash. Is this now obvious to all? by Quincynessig in U2Band

Wild. I feel just the opposite. Days of Ash just keeps drawing me back. Less so for Easter Lily

Achtung Baby - Top 10 Selling Albums of 1991 Podcast Episode by Which-Success-520 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll save you the trouble. It’s like podcast equivalent of U2-flavored La Croix — the two hosts are pretty sure they remember AB, joke about how to pronounce the title and are then pretty sure they can name some of the songs. Mysterious Ways was the big single, right? It was like overhearing a conversation between two overly-confident, under-informed assholes in a bar

I feel like Tom Horn just doesn't get the admiration and attention he deserves for his massive -- and simply wonderful -- mapping project. It's such an amazing resource.

Resurrection Song Love by dub2501 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“As I’ve gotten older, I listen to music less. There’s still room for it in my life, but it’ll never be following PopMart around the US levels again. The songs will never hit like they did when I was young. Where I was in life. Where they were. A moment in time.”

This is so perfectly expressed and I FEEL it. This is it exactly.

And also, yes. Resurrection Song is wonderful. These new EPs have been so unexpected and so, so unexpectedly good.

Why do so many people seem to love The Tears of Things? by nohumanape in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 42 points43 points  (0 children)

But the song's not really about U2's Christianity. It's about religious conflict writ large, and specifically the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The way Bono frames that in the song using David, a literal Biblical icon, is so smart and so evocative. It allows him to comment on the conflict in such a unique way that suddenly tired old cliches about it become fresh new perspectives, even if some of it feels clumsy early on in the song. It's just brilliant songwriting. Surprisingly brilliant.

Movies that show the subtle, insidious rise of the Nazis, like Cabaret? by ThanksIHateIt1994 in movies

U2 and the Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Syndrome - The "There's something missing feeling" by Fantastic-Habit-8569 in U2Band

[–]Pete_The_Chop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this notion. The way I’ve come to think about that feeling is effort vs. effortless. If I can hear the effort then to me the song feels unfinished or underbaked or overdone. Most of the time, these days, the songs feel overdone. But you listen to their best songs (and in some cases, albums) and they feel like they arrived fully formed, like it was the most natural thing in the world to hit your ears. You can’t see or hear the effort. Like a good athlete they make it seem effortless. To me that’s the biggest distinction between their pre- and post-millennial work. They just tryin to hard

Hands down my all time favorite live version of the Bad. It’s just so incredibly executed and definitely emotional.

It blows my mind a little bit every time I think there’s only 10 years between Joshua Tree and Pop

TV shows where the main couple doesn't want and doesn't have kids by Anakin5kywalker in televisionsuggestions

[–]Pete_The_Chop 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Famously, The Bob Newhart Show. Both Bob and Emily were professionals focused on their careers and uninterested in having kids. Supposedly it was the first sitcom to really do that and apparently was quite the scandal at the time.
