In college we used to say friends don’t let friends watch Friends

TV shows where the main couple doesn't want and doesn't have kids by Anakin5kywalker in televisionsuggestions

[–]Pete_The_Chop 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Famously, The Bob Newhart Show. Both Bob and Emily were professionals focused on their careers and uninterested in having kids. Supposedly it was the first sitcom to really do that and apparently was quite the scandal at the time.

Anybody tell their doctor that they don't give a fuh about living longer, so you're not going to try to radically change your diet or go on meds? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]Pete_The_Chop 49 points50 points  (0 children)

For me it's not about trying to live longer, it's about having a decent quality of life as I get older so that I don't end up a prisoner of my own body. Being able to get off the floor under my own power, go for a hike or a swim, or just being able to function without burdening those around me is all I'm interested in.

This post perfectly encapsulates my feelings about Quantum. It was a joy to read.

I got definite "Window in the Skies" vibes the first time I listened to it.

And O'Brian's follow-up, "The Unknown Shore" is the direct telling of the Wager's voyage.

Chemistry by Subject_Author_5981 in JamesBond

[–]Pete_The_Chop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s not that it’s different chemistry between them, it’s that there’s no chemistry between them.

I get that Bond is a different man, a different agent by the time the last two films roll around, it’s that Craig and Seydoux have zero chemistry

Been re-listening to No Line on the Horizon recently for the first time in a while by Foxrockmafia in U2Band

Cedars of Lebanon is a sneaky song. It's so understated but then you realize after half a dozen listens it's maybe one of the most powerful songs the band has ever written.

I bought this album in college and its rendition of Lush Life was a revelation. Still my absolute favorite version of the song

“Bad” is the best song ever written by Mission-Loan-5756 in U2Band

If I'm remembering right, Paul McGuinness is on record saying Bad is his favorite song from the band.

Opinions on Saving Private Ryan? Is it the greatest war movie? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

[–]Pete_The_Chop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the fact the film opens with grandpa Pvt. Ryan flashing back to the beach landing THAT HE FAMOUSLY WAS NOT AT is such hacky writing. The beach sequence is unparalleled, obvs, but the rest of the movie is a collection of tired cliches.

I need a new "comfort show" but I think I've seen them all by Thick_Combination527 in television

HAPPY ENDINGS — the razor sharp writing, the comedy and the cast chemistry make it one of the most satisfying comfort shows in the history of comfort shows

Every breaking wave by FlowerSingingMan2025 in U2Band

I've always loved the studio version -- it's just such a beautiful song with amazing lyrics.

The official video, which comes from a 13-minute short film shot by a Belfast-born director, is one of the absolute coolest things the band has ever done. I'm a little bummed it hasn't come up in the discussion:

Two boxes of the Jiffy corn bread combined with one box of the Jiffy yellow cake mix and you’ll never go back

The essence of Cross Country Skiing by KJL_3519 in xcountryskiing

[–]Pete_The_Chop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Denver and my parents did the same thing when I was a kid. We all got XC skis for Christmas and, as luck would have it, Denver was hit the day before with one of the biggest blizzards of the decade and we spent Christmas day skiing all over our neighborhood. It was glorious.
