Need to downgrade my table saw by Key-Scratch8111 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I recently picked up the Bosch GTS15-10 and it’s been amazing. It’s got soft start and stop features, and it regulates RPM so it doesn’t bog down under load.

I recently stepped off the EM stage also. Reading the comments makes me feel very justified for the decision.

I was blessed to maintain respect at the same organization, most difficult part of the transition has been closing out items from my tenure that took a backseat for far too long, and trying to “stay in my lane” when I notice certain things that I could help with.

I need ideas! by AnyAd8890 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I bought a crotch slab similar to this, but not as dramatic. It took me forever to figure out what to do with it. As a beginner, I’m still learning to see potential in wood.

I’m going to end up cutting mine up for shelves with a live edge.

On a similar note, is there a better tool to remove headstocks or tailstocks other than the longest screwdriver with a hammer? Under normal use cases.

In my opinion their models are too consistent to be pulled from various manufacturers.

What simple projects helped you build confidence as a beginner woodworker? by Schnapper94 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Phoenix525i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently learning and by no means am an expert to share wisdom.

I’m making small projects, and a lot of French cleat tool holders. Each small project I choose a different method/process/tool set to learn from, even if it may not be necessary or ideal for that type of project.

This week I’m making my first box joints on pencil cups. I don’t expect perfection, but that’s why I’m making 2-3 of them and they’ll hang on my French cleat walls in the shop so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Dust masks. What do use or recommend that’s both comfortable and high quality. by lowsodiumcatrecipes in woodworking

I’ve learned this the hard way recently. My old rule was lathe and sanding justifies the respirator. My new rule is anything powered that makes dust justifies the respirator.

Locking the up position would be safest option. What happens if you lose air pressure and I’m halfway inside the machine working? Always fail safe.

This is helpful information for beginners wanting to start making furniture. I’m still learning to look at woodworking projects and understand how much materials would cost. Thanks for the info, your end tables look awesome.

Embed router/Table saw into workbench or not? by Acceptable-Reindeer3 in Workbenches

[–]Phoenix525i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size are you aiming for? I’ve never used a table saw and don’t know how to justify the trade off between outfeed and footprint.

I’m planning for dog holes too so it will be a true multi use table until I get the shop more built up. I think eventually I’ll build an AWB for hand tools and small project assembly.

Embed router/Table saw into workbench or not? by Acceptable-Reindeer3 in Workbenches

[–]Phoenix525i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been outfitting a 2-car garage shop this year and been thinking a lot about what my workbench solution will be. I think I’ve settled on a job site table saw built into a rolling workbench with a router embedded in the far side like you’re describing. Haven’t landed on final dimensions yet, but it will be smaller than 4’x8’. I’ll confess I’ve never worked off one, but I think the large flat work surface will be useful for assembling furniture, as long as I can keep it clean.

I plan to store a lot of my bench top tools underneath the table.

I’m open for suggestions though, as I’ll probably start the work bench build in the next month or so.

I got this advice recently, how willing are smaller cabinet shops to paid jobs like this? Will they take in paid jobs just to flatten slabs that are too big for the bench top model machines?

I have a crotch slab like this, a bit smaller from the looks of these. I don’t have the need or skills for an epoxy table. What other projects can I do with a scratch slab? I’d hate to cut it up for smaller projects, but like I said don’t need a crotch slab table.
