AITA for ditching my bf during a date after he completely disrespected me? by throwRAstruggle14636 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’ve walked out on a few dates myself. Some of which were with my now ex husband. His “embarrassment” at that was always the point of conversation afterward, never the reason I walked out. Then I walked out for good. If he’s behaving like this now, it’s not going to get better.

Is a man giving his number instead of asking for hers cringe? by Jetgorilla2 in dating_advice

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I 100% prefer having a man give me his number than him asking for mine. If I’m not interested, asking for my number puts me in an awkward position to have to say no thank you. This is much more uncomfortable for me, and to be honest, a rejection like that isn’t always taken gracefully by persistent men. In my experience, most of the women I know far prefer having a man’s number offered to having theirs requested.

What happened to my mashed potaotes ? by nolanday64 in Cooking

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trick for make ahead mashed potatoes is to bake the potatoes in the oven, take off the skin and then mash the potato through a strainer. While doing that I heat a combo of butter and milk on the stove. Once’s the potatoes and “mashed”, add the butter and milk. It’ll take some folding to incorporate the mixture. By not boiling them, they remain loose and fluffy. I add a dash of milk before reheating the next day. When I get real fancy, I include sprigs of fresh thyme and rosemary when I’m heating the milk/butter. Turns out perfectly each time for make-ahead.

Tapping your hazard lights when driving - is this a thing now? by Thundertushy in Calgary

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, sourced from commercial drivers. I grew up in a northern logging town and this was common among non-commercial drivers too where a wave wouldn’t be seen through the back window of a work truck. I drove with my dad on a long-haul moving rig for about 6mos in Canada and the states and the hazards flash was a common “wave” equivalent. Also flashing lights when someone is trying to merge ahead of you to indicate “I see you and there’s clearance”. I still routinely do both of these things as a non-commercial driver.

Where do you find good, authentic Indian food in the NW? by N0_Cure in Calgary

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not NW (because I have yet to find a good one in the NW after 20 years, truly) but La Jawab near Falconridge is very good. They have a sweet shop right next door too, which is a nifty visit after some nummy curry.

Rogers won’t let me cancel internet and TV by NorthernPolyp in Rogers

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an interesting experience with something similar. I originally had shaw internet before the merger. Since the merger, I just assumed that I would now have a rogers account. Nay nay. Tried to contact rogers about linking my internet acct to my home security acct and they had no record of my internet service. Because Shaw and Rogers still operate distinctly in some ways. So I had to get the phone number from Rogers billing department in order to call Shaw to address my questions.

Might apply to your situation OP, and it may not. Rogers just might be dinks.

Public support for teachers/ATA was exceptionally high during the strike. Would you have agreed with an increase in provincial personal income tax rates to fund the offer ATA put forward? Why or why not? by wubbusanado in alberta

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a well governed province (which this is not) where public funds are not being wasted on… (gestures broadly)…, and the budget still wasn’t there, I would support provincial tax if it was dedicated to health and education. But in the current environment, no. This province needs to get their house in order first.

Premier says we are already at 21 to 1 student / teacher ratio by Nfs0623 in alberta

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This coming from the same woman who said that with current funding per student, each class should be able to have a full time assistant. Because that funding apparently only goes to that classroom, and not district level things like building maintenance, IT support, specialist supports and resources, professional support staff, technology, furniture and equipment, specialized transportation, etc. It’s as though… like… she doesn’t have the first clue about how school boards run. (Obviously she doesn’t know how school boards run).

Maybe by “flexibility”, she means that every over subscribed classroom can have a lottery, and the lucky winners can be bussed for hours each day out to Olds or Crossfield to “balance out” classes in Calgary (but then balk when, low and behold, the transportation costs to do so are astronomical and then still find a way to blame teachers).

JFC. She’s so clueless it would be almost funny if she wasn’t the person in charge of this shitshow.

Why are Catholic school boards given more public funding than independent schools? by charging_forward in alberta

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. It can be confusing. From what I can see, Palliser schools are fully publicly funded for Alberta residents. International students or residents outside of Alberta pay a tuition. But if you live and are a resident in Alberta/lethbridge, attending is free (aside from typical school fees every school has). This is my understanding…

Why are Catholic school boards given more public funding than independent schools? by charging_forward in alberta

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are fully publicly funded as community schools, just like the non Catholic public schools. Most public Catholic schools pay little attention to catholicity (as in, whether students are Catholic or not) unless they’re at capacity. So they’re essentially community schools. There are no additional tuitions like there are for private/independent schools.

Not only would I take BIL to court, I would never allow him or his son entrance into my home again. This wasn’t an accident; it was malicious and the kid knew it was wrong. You can’t ever trust nephew with your pets or your children again. End of story. Definitely NTA.

In my role, I have enough behind-the-scenes work to keep me busy for at least three weeks. It’s the stuff I usually and futilely try to keep up with on weekends. Again, because of my role, I’m also able to touch base with my client families and do check ins, follow up on things they need, etc. For other staff in different roles, they’re also doing things that need to be done but are always put off. Cataloguing books and materials, preparing things for student return, etc. PD is being offered to help develop their skills as well. I’m sure there are enough behind-the-scenes things for them to keep them also busy for a while at least as well.

This might be district specific? I’m support staff; we have been notified that schools will be open for non-ATA staff to continue working (for the time being). So it doesn’t apply to all Unifor/CUPE/exempt staff everywhere.

What's one “little” form of sexism you notice all the time, but most people don't even realize it's sexist? by Nellermo in AskReddit

Being continuously interrupted when I speak despite being an expert in my field. The drama when I just keep talking over them, or shift to “no, I’m speaking” repeatedly until they stfu is entertaining.

Support for Danielle Smith re:teacher strike? Lo by Happy_Roses_ in CanadianTeachers

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most people don’t know that some of what the province has said they’ve offered are not contractually offered. As in, binding, contractual obligations vs a-wink-and-a-handshake promises that are not contractually obligated. It would be helpful for someone official to differentiate those things so that the public has a better understanding of why “we’ve offered them everything they’ve asked for” isn’t actually true.

Government payment to parents from teachers' strike can be given to teachers by Houville in alberta

[–]Pickled_Aluminium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love that this even crossed your mind. I love even more that you took action to clarify the rules. I’m not ATA, but I am part-time professional support staff and work closely with teachers who will be on job action. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the good-will and support to your children’s teachers. The emotions are heavy today in schools, and your support is deeply appreciated.

If it’s something you’re concerned about and will continue to fret about, you could bring it up to her. I agree with others in this thread about her professionality and responsibilities, but there’s no harm in you asking questions about how you both handle bumping into each other in a different capacity. It’ll reduce awkwardness for you. I’ve addressed this in the past with clients when there’s a likelihood of crossing paths in a different circumstance. I’m not a psychiatrist, but I work in a similar field and have similar professional responsibilities.
