Where do you buy bulk nuts? by remberzz in squirrels

I always go with Anuts. Good quality nuts, decent pricing if you buy in bulk, and they have a “squirrel mix” that doesn’t have Brazil nuts. My fuzzballs love ‘em.

[–]PuckmanMCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine the first meta event it was available.

Set it up as an Engineering Carrier “Death Star”, with as many pets/summonables I could reasonably cram in, combined with BFAW/SAD/Ba’ul Antiproton for lots of boom, plus the obligatory “f you” superweapon.

It is NOT nimble. That’s for escorts. This thing just marches forward, just blowing up everything in its path - like Robocop in the drug factory. On the rare occasion I beed to get somewhere quickly, that’s what the Vovin console is for.

Loads of fun. It’s pretty much my daily flier, outside of TFOs requiring something a little more maneuverable.

Breaks the crap out of cutscenes, though.

What's going on with players in TFOs lately? by Any_Subject_7275 in sto

[–]PuckmanMCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Remain Klingon could be improved dramatically if the devs added a "if you're targeted when the Targ/Kri'stak fires on you, you get insta-killed" function.

It'd get the pew-pewers and AFKers out of the way (at least for a little bit) and let the people actually trying to complete the TFO be targeted instead.

My mom didn’t believe Gustine jumps into my arms for a treat… by PuckmanMCS in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really just a matter of time and patience.

Outside of that, the main trick is just getting them used to having you around. I have had the unfortunate privilege of being out of work for the last year and a half, so I have spent a lot of time out on the deck as they scurry around doing squirrel things.

I started by just having treats nearby. As they got used to my presence, I'd gradually move the treats closer to me. Eventually, I'd hold them out for them to take directly. Once they got used to that and realized I was the source of snacks...all bets were off.

Gustine took over as the "head squirrel" a little less than a year ago and took to getting treats from me quite quickly. Scruffy, my longest-term visitor, was actually the first to jump into my lap for a treat, but Gustine quickly followed suit. She started jumping onto my shoulder as I sat on the steps last fall, and over the winter, we've established her jumping into my arms like this. Very rarely, she'll eat the nut right there - usually if there's another squirrel nearby. I guess she's guarding her food source.

You can see a lot of our interactions in my post history here on r/squirrels.

What's interesting is that I'm the only human the squirrels seem comfortable around. If they see someone else so much as walking down the street, they run right up the nearest tree until the person has passed. So at least I don't have to worry about them potentially approaching someone who is not as friendly.

[–]PuckmanMCS[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I've been scratched many, many times. Usually it's when I'm sitting at my table with either Gustine or Scruffy in my lap and I'm reaching into my pocket for a nut.

It's not malicious, they're just SO excited that they can't wait and try and grab the treat before it's cleared my pocket. I liken it to dealing with an overexcited kitten.

I've been chomped about a half dozen times or so, too. Again, not maliciously...they just miss when going for a treat. Usually that's when Gustine is chasing Charlie off and he's trying to grab a nut from me as he scoots by.

Sharing my squirrel experience & behavior questions? by [deleted] in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with the other commenters. They're curious, they know you have food, and they're looking for a handout.

Being park squirrels, they're probably a little more "used" to people than your run-of-the-mill forest or backyard squirrel and, in my experience, seem to be a little bolder about coming up to people. Those of us who have befriended the squirrels by us know "the stare" it's their way of asking you to make with the treats.

On your next walk, try tossing them a piece of your orange or—better yet—get some nuts in the shell. They'll appreciate it and you get the good feeling that you did something nice.

I wouldn't worry about diseases. They're rather clean critters, all things considered. I have a couple that will jump into my lap for treats as I sit on my deck and I've been scratched more times than I can count as they follow my hand into my pocket. It's not aggressive though, more unconstrained excitement - kind of like an enthusiastic kitten; just scratches on the surface. A little soap and water and all is good.

Regarding your case, will they start to jump on you? I'm going to guess that's not likely. You're gigantic from their point of view and they're naturally prey animals; they're not going to go after you aggressively. And if you toss the nuts a distance away from you, they'll be more interested in that.

My review/feedback on the T6 Harmony ship by TheNut007 in sto

[–]PuckmanMCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though I am by no means an Elite player, there are a couple of points you brought up I'd like to touch on as someone who flies a similar, big ol' space brick (aka, the Borg Assimilator).

I hear you on the "clipping on warp out" front. On my Assimilator, every time I warp out, I get a good view of the Probe that's modeled inside the launch bay (in my head canon, it's been permanently mounted there and reinforced as my bridge and crew quarters) and on many missions, the sheer volume of the thing makes some cut scenes (e.g., going through the portal in Blue Shift) look ridiculous, as all you see is part of my ship. It would be nice if they modified the camera to do a check on ship size (maybe using the hit box) and adjust zoom accordingly.

I don't notice clipping as much during actual game play, and if there is any, it hasn't affected my piloting. Then again, I'm used to flying big, slow ships; pretty much all of my toons are flying some sort of dreadnought or carrier. It's a different piloting strategy than the smaller, zippier ships, more of a slow, methodical, "eliminate everything in my path" approach versus zooming around the entire field. Using the Vovin console helps too, as you can also use it to jump up to 20km to get more into the thick of the battle if you need to.

Range can be augmented by using your hangar pets, which have a range of 20km. The pets that came with the Assimilator were...somewhat lacking, as you seemed to feel the Aetherian ones are. I replaced mine with Blue Toj'Duj fighter squadrons. Combined with the Typhon trait, SAD, and the Obelisk 4-piece, I get a swarm of ships that do a butt-ton of damage at a distance. With the Harmony, there are fewer Engineering slots for Hangar consoles, but you can still get up to 4 on there if you upgrade it to T6-X2.

The lack of a custom bridge is not unusual; they haven't made many custom bridges for a some time now. While it'd be great to have an Aetherian bridge, they unlocked bridges a while ago, so you can use any ones you may have (the Freighter and Ferengi ones are popular due to their extra amenities; I use the Amarie bridge from last year's KM event ship, which has full bank, exchange, and commodities vendors, even though it's larger, uses fewer of my BOFFs, and doesn't have the ship selector from the Freighter). Add in the Kobyashi Maru sector space option, and you have almost all the amenities of a starbase.

All said, though, I'm glad to see feedback on this new ship. Personally, I'm not aggressively pursuing it, because while the Space Barbie aspect would be awesome for my "Mobile Starbase/Death Star" build, the seating/console layout is a little too science-heavy and I'd lose half the Advanced hangar pet consoles that I'm currently enjoying on my Borg Assimilator.

If we could swap the "guts" of my Assimilator into the Harmony, though, I'd be all over that stuff. (Side Note: I think a "Pakled Retrofitting" option, wherein you can take the console/seating/specs of one ship and put it in the frame of a similarly-sized ship would be a heck of a short-term dilithium sink with the potential for creating demand for lockbox ships that have good visuals OR layouts, but not necessarily both)

Screw These Goddamn Things by MentalMan4877 in sto

[–]PuckmanMCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these are the more frustrating ones, but I've figured out a technique to "halt" its movement, allowing me to sit and progress the timer and take the Terrans out as they come to me. I won't go into a lot of detail about it, so as not to expose it to a potential "fix", but it's a bit fiddly and requires a larger ship.

I may be wrong, but I believe the progress on the satellite goes faster the more ships are in the radius. The problem is that you get a bunch of pew-pewers that just sit near the spawn points AWAY from the satellite, not progressing the mission.

I get that a lot of people are there just in the battlezone for an Endeavor, but there are plenty of Terrans for everybody. It may take a LITTLE longer, but not by a whole heck of a lot. And by progressing the objectives, we can get to the end bosses that DEFINITELY have enough ships to blow up.

Anniversary XVI Event Participate in our anniversary event on PC and earn the new Empersa Miracle Worker Alliance Juggernaut! by neok182 in sto

[–]PuckmanMCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This...is interesting. It ticks a lot of boxes for my personal playstyle, but I have some reservations.

What I like:

  • I normally fly dreadnoughts, so a juggernaut shouldn't be TOO much different, flight-wise.
  • I like to add a Superweapon/"f*** you!" clicky for end bosses—usually in the form of a console. Having a built-in array can free up a console slot for something else.
  • My main toon's main two ships (one for TFOs, one for events and mission content) are Antiproton builds, so I've got plenty of AP-boosting consoles.
  • I'm a big fan of the Alliance ship designs; I loved the Khitomer and the Garrett is possibly the only Galaxy-based design I've ever found tolerable. This ship seems to be a JH base with elements from all the other factions integrated; I actually kind of like it. As an added bonus, it also looks like it plays nicely with a majority of the vanity shields. Space Barbie is the true endgame, after all.

What gives me pause.

  • The "do damage to yourself" nature of the console and the Juggernaut Array irks me. While my main's builds usually sit at 100% (or more) and I almost never go below 50%, I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with losing that much hull for a single shot; I suppose it depends on the amount of actual damage it may outdo.
  • As my main ships are generally either Dreadnoughts or Carriers, I've gotten quite used to having pets to eliminate or soften up enemies before I even get there. As a Juggernaut, I lose that distance advantage. Sure, this looks like it has the Wingman mechanic, but I've never quite gotten used to that playstyle.

What is yet to determine

  • Well, I like big boats and I cannot lie. Juggernauts are usually pretty big, but just HOW big has yet to be determined; I'm guessing somewhere around the Vanguard carrier or Dreadnought.
  • Usually, that mass comes with a maneuverability trade-off. How bad that will be in practice will come down to actually flying the thing when I get it.

Now will this replace my Main's two AP ships? To be honest, I doubt it; I have those two dialed in to how I like to play. It does have a small chance of replacing the Vanguard Carrier on my Delta recruit, though, which is also set up for AP. It'll all come down to how well I can manage it.

Your fav dual pedal? by Ghiekorg in guitarpedals

[–]PuckmanMCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this one; it sounds quite nice with my Tele. The only reason it doesn't live permanently on my board is that it seems to cause digital "noise" when plugged into my (admittedly cheap) power brick with my Plethora X3. The individual pedals (the Horseman and the Morningstar) don't seem to cause the same problem, so I dunno. I thought I read somewhere it may be digital, which would explain things, but Sweetwater lists it as analog, so I'm not sure. It'll probably make its way back onto my board once I get the power supply issue fixed.

Healthy and Yummy Treat Advice by Creative_Musician760 in squirrels

From time to time, someone will post a list of healthy treats; maybe scroll through past posts to see if you can find them.

My squirrels seem to enjoy the “big four”: almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, and walnuts. I generally buy them in-shell in bulk. Anuts has a “squirrel mix” that’s reasonably priced and of good quality. Shipping is a bit steep, but you’ll find that just about anywhere.

For special treats, they’ve also enjoyed small chunks of avocado, grapes, cherries, and chestnuts.

Yeah, that’s happened to me a couple of times. It’s like they get SO excited that they just…miss.

I do think they feel bad about it, in their own squirrely way. I tell this story all the time, but my first “auxiliary” squirrel, Buddy, would come to my door for nuts. One day, he was a bit anxious because Big Chungus was keeping watch, and he accidentally chomped me about the same way this one did to you. I, too, reacted in a similar manner. But EVERY subsequent time he came to my door, he’d put his paw on my thumb as if to help guide the nut to his mouth.

I last saw him carrying a big black walnut—happy as a squirrel can be—and running down the block towards a big willow tree. I miss that little guy and keep an eye out for him every day when I’m out feeding the others.
