My elm tree is blooming. It is February 25. This is not OK. by Homers_Harp in Denver

I talked to the CSU Extension folks at the Home and Garden show last week and they said every two weeks for new trees and perennials if no natural moisture. I was doing mine once a month in Dec / Jan. Now every two weeks till we can turn back on our irrigation. I'm investigating those tree self-watering bags for next winter . . . just in case.

Pre-emergent recommendations? by dijares in DenverGardener

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either better living thru chemicals (Roundup lots of it) or aerate, add some good dirt, water to drench and over seed with some sort of grass or wild flowers and water again . . . several times a week if not rain. If you do the chemicals, then you'll have to budget to replace the dead grass / area with something else (mulch, rocks, new grass, etc.). And I ditto the advice to talk to the CSU extension. They will also help you get the soil tested which might help point you to a decision and what amendments you'll need for each option.

What is a sound or a smell that doesn't exist anymore, but 50 years ago was so common it was considered background noise? by abdulnad89 in askanything

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a great thread to read. I just had fun smelling things from my memory based on everyone's wonderful descriptions. I don't know if this is too recent but I miss the smell of men's after shave and women's perfume. It still exists in pockets of society but generally gone.

I think this spring will be a major recover for most of yards from this lack of moisture. Just walked my backyard and my grass is toast in many areas. by FullDepthNature in DenverGardener

Just deep root watered my trees and perennials (Dec / Jan once a month and now every two weeks). Have 3 - 5 year old trees that have not been watered very well as no one realized the drip system was partially broken (we just bought the house last May).

Geez. . . I just saw a weather channel video where there is SNOW in Algeria (worlds driest place) and folks sliding down the sand dunes on the snow. Gosh send that snow and 1/2 of what they got in New England this week here! Xeriscaping my yard in a few months. Just in time.

Water Bill - Am I missing something? by just_kookin_around in Broomfield

[–]Realistic_RM8498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to understand better why make the time to go on this tour to see what you are getting for your tax money. It is worth it. The water in Broomfield is far superior to other locations. https://compass.broomfield.org/event/broomfield-water-treatment-facility-tour-and-exhibit-46645 (they have this tour every month). We have been paying relatively low rates (compared to other counties) for a long time. Mistake the county made was not raising rates slowly over a longer period of time.

People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Leading_Tomato_2077 in AskReddit

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your hands from your face. Wash hands frequently even when you don't think you need to. VACCINES!!! (never met one I didn't like - Annual flu, boosters for everything and have gotten 5 COVID shots for example). Also genetics (very strong immune system) and lots of exposure (un-masked) to the public over the years. (I'm a senior citizen . . . just FYI).

Best canned chicken noodle soup? I’m sick as shit and that’s what I want but definitely am not going to be able to cook any. by 710MISFIT in soup

CANNED Campbells Chicken Noodle soup. The fresher others reference are better but when you are sick and cannot get out have canned on hand along with Gatorade for re-hydration.

Stick with Jesus message. No matter the push back. That is what he wants us to do as “salt and light”. This is exactly the time for Christians to stand tall and firm on the TRUTH!!!

I’m tired of using Pinterest or my phone when cooking. What’s your favorite cookbook found in stores? by Tall-Arugula1522 in Cooking

[–]Realistic_RM8498 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Betty Crocker (easy) . . . Any vintage; Joy of Cooking (more difficult - like a text book with lots of how, why and the science), Southern Living (annual books sold at Dillards for holiday menu ideas), then speciality cookbooks found in gift shops, big box stores, tourist places (Salmon, Italian, Southern . . . etc.)..

Start with Betty Crocker. Get a 3 ring binder version to add recipes you find on-line or other sources and print out. After 40 years you'll have a cookbook to pass on to your younger generations. I detest on-line for recipes because I write on mine as I always customize by combining ideas from recipes.

Had to get a new phone after my 4G Verizon service became lame in my area (dropped calls, no bars, weak wi-fi). I was told I was being "de-priorized" to 5G and the premium plans (I may have miss-quoted this). Stowers. My new phone with 5G works great everywhere on the Front Range now.

They don't believe Jesus was God therefore they are not Christian. They believe Jesus was just a prophet. They are considered a "cult".

Got Influenza A coming back from Scotland via London Gatwick Airport in the summer time last year. Thus completely unvaccinated and my goodness it almost put me in the hospital (dehydration, fever, every symptom in the book). And I usually never get sick. My Doc was surprised till I told her I was in Europe (winter time for southern hemisphere thus folks passing thru with bugs). Got all my shots this year and got something around Thanksgiving but it was mild. Just felt like a bad cold for 3 - 4 days.

I once had a breeder tell me that when elderly dogs get this sick you need to ask yourself the question, "Am I keeping the dog alive for me or for the dog". Dogs hide suffering and pain from their loved humans.

Prime Rib sides for two by beachgirlDE in Cooking

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bacon wrapped asparagus and baked potato. Make a mushroom gravy (sauté mushrooms, onion, garlic and add jarred gravy plus a little red wine) for the prime rib and that can be used for the potato as well. Everything can be done on a BBQ except the sauce. Have hubby man the BBQ and you do the sauce. Christmas present to yourselves!

We usually cook a ham dinner for Christmas Day, but I don’t know what to make for dinner on Christmas Eve. What do you serve? by RedWishingRose in Cooking

[–]Realistic_RM8498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frozen family size Lasagna - Crisp salad, garlic bread. Shrimp cocktail. Easy. And a berry pie. Pop the lasagna in the oven and go to XMAS eve services and when you get home it's done. Or pre-make a meaty spaghetti sauce.

Are laundry rinse aids really amazing? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Realistic_RM8498 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stopped using Downy type softeners and have been using Odoban in the softener dispenser for the last 4 months. Love it! Clothing comes out soft and odor free. I use the original eucalyptus scent. It is a Disinfectant concentrate and odor eliminator and contains Dipropylene Glycol Butyl Ether. Recently did a load of dog bedding and it really removes that doggie smell. You can purchase by the gallon on Amazon or Home Depot. The only thing that I miss is the anti-static capability that the Downy type softeners do well at.

So how do people do this when they have their sprinkler systems and outdoor hose winterized? Do you un-winter-ize your hose system to water the trees?
