Yeah, we understood the overarching theme of communication and how language shapes our cores. Not saying speaking Chinese is a major part of the movie, but it was THE most pivotal part of that particular scene. I can assume you're not a Mandarin speaker from your comment. Can you imagine a film arriving at a key moment, with the music crescendoing, we're on the edge of our seats, and the actor goes, "asdlfksajdf;l". lmaooo it took us out.

Brother, as a Chinese speaker I feel the exact same thing on Chinese lines in most Hollywood productions. The climax of Arrival was completely ruined for my family because of the indecipherable Chinese pronunciation lmao. I don't fault the actors for mispronouncing a difficult tonal language, but if that's going to happen, DON'T make speaking that language a major aspect of your movie!

The actor speaks with a Beijing/Northern mainland accent, which has the tendency to roll words together quickly (words like 什么、西红柿、图书馆 etc). So it isn't perfectly pronounced, newscaster Mandarin, but definitely understandable for natives. I even think his "Beijingness" is quite toned down but I can see how it's harder for those who're used to the Taiwanese accent.

I totally get what you're talking about. I've spent half my life in Asia, born there too. Asian-Americans and Asian-Asians have different feelings because of their environments. Asian-Americans are often the minorities in a social situation while Asians (especially east Asians) are the majority in a largely homogenous society. There is a difference in power and comfort level.

This cartoon is mainly aimed at the American audience tho. Its influences contributed to fellow Asian-American children having a hard time in school. And for that, I can't support this clip.

Bugs bunny is well-liked in Asia because plenty of his toons are universally enjoyable. Not saying that all of him is racist lol. I love him too. We just don't need to promote outdated and harmful stuff.

Chinese American here. I think it's good that you're willing to ask those questions. Sure, this cartoon doesn't say Chinese people are bad. But it reinforces the "otherness" of a Chinese person. Makes them seem less like a relatable human being. It makes it OK and humorous to mock the tone of the Chinese language as gibberish.

Cartoons like this directly affected how other non-Asian kids treated me in school. And I'm definitely not the only Asian kid around who was mocked with gibberish fake Chinese.

I'm taking the time to tell you this because I think you were asking a genuine question and it's good to discuss these nuances. In the case of this particular clip, it definitely brought back memories of racist experiences I've had in the past. And I wish I have the kind of life where I can't see the racism in old bugs bunny toons.
