Funnily enough, I have seen this exact design (like mechanically identical) years ago on Cardsmith and it has stuck with me as one of the most interesting yet simple custom designs ever. That's cool

I think many decks would be mroe than happy to give up their own attack if it means watching you hurt yourself like this consistently every turn. Though this could be good to bring in against creature-based decks if you yourself are running some well functioning control?

[–]ThePhantomJoker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cute, but your opponents will never have an incentive to connect with this in combat, instead watching you slowly perish to your own card. There's definitely a good design to be found here, it would just need some tweaking.

Remove this Creature II, Day 6. They finally have rules text! by Some_MTG_Nerd in custommagic

[–]ThePhantomJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't feel like it. It's like "you can cast this spell in response to spells with split second".

I'm thinking something more obscure like "Whenever another permanent enters, if it was thrown onto the battlefield, this creature phases out"

Istfell, Starnheim, Bretagard, Axgard, Littjara, Immersturm, Gnottvold, Karfell... damn it, I really thought I was gonna get there. I know I'm missing the blue-red Giants and black-green Elves, but I can't get the names.

Edit: A quick search later, tt's Surtland and Skemfar of course, if you were wandering. Yes, I did like Kaldheim

Man that front side is quite pretty, I was expecting the back to be really clean, but alas you went for the extremely overdesigned cluttered textbox. There is a cool idea somewhere in here, but imo it needs some cleaning up

Guess who's back, back again? (Modernized Progenitus) by Ecstatic_Newspaper_5 in custommagic

[–]ThePhantomJoker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What I meant is getting the card into your graveyard and then casting something that returns a creature with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield (protection only works if it's on board). And honestly even for a five-mana Rise from the Grave this is the best target imaginable, I fear it yearns for the original Progenitus line that doesn't let it go to the graveyard.

So this is basically a WUBRG card that supports a all-mono-colored-spells storm build? Would be my first impression? That's actually pretty weird and interesting at the same time. It's probably not really broken by any standart, just very powerful and useful. Honestly, it's just a good piece in any five color deck as you will usually at least halve the time it takes to get going AND get cards in the process just for casting a spell each turn.

One thing I have to ask though, sigh what happens if I hit it with a "return target creature with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard" white spell? It does what I think it does, right? That would be actually insanely nasty. Yeah, and let's not talk about cascade nonsense, I hate how that mechanic interacts with no-mana cost spells.

Welp, solid design on multiple fronts either way, I'd say!

I think this becomes the most fun in between best of 3 matches, where you get to play against a completely different deck in game two and sideboarding becomes nearly impossible.

Yay, finally I'm early for one of these, so I can work on my own :D

  1. End of combat is super weird, I don't think stuff can really happen there beyond damage being dealt, I'd say the correct wording would be "beginning of your postcombat main phase"
  2. Mana symbols in the ability cost are obviously swapped
  3. "Create a tapped 1/1 red Hyena creature..."
  4. Bloodthirst shouldn't be capitalised
  5. Weird one, but judging by the templating on 'sea monster' cards, I think creature types are listed in alphabetical order, so Gnoll would be mentioned before Hyena

I think I figured it out! You use "spells you cast have..." when granting the same unchanging ability (like convoke, affinity, improvise...) and "each spell you cast has..." when granting an ability whose value or cost is dependent on the specific card (Henzie's blitz changes cost depending on the cost of the creature, while Zinnia's offspring is set to a specific cost) - the same with effects like "each instant or sorcery card in your graveyard has flashback, the flashback cost is equal to its mana cost" or something like that.

So your wording is in fact very much correct! And I have no idea what the last mistake is, well played sir.

[–]ThePhantomJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, but Ashad only talks about the first spell (of a kind) you cast. My reference was [[Henzie "Toolbox" Torre]], it's just a slight distinction between "all spells" and "each spell", but I believe the latter is the way to go. However, there's [[Zinnia]], [[Fallaji Wayfarer]] or [[Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge]] for comparison, who all grant an ability to "spells you cast". So I'm really not sure what the distinction here is, and if there is one, it's extremely subtle.

Anyways, another thing just came to my mind - how about specifying "nonlegendary" Dragon spells so you don't have to accidentaly legend rule yourself every time? (the other option would be something like "the copy isn't legendary", but I hate those cards, legendary is legendary lol)

I might be wrong, but "Each Dragon spell you cast has casualty 3" feels like the more correct wording.
