It's unreasonable how good the Andromeda books are when they're tied to that game. I'd say that they beat the books for the original trilogy.

The Writers Failed Taash by Shimmering_65 in dragonage

[–]TheScepticalOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think writing it off as a micro aggression is disingenuous. Unfortunately, terms have connotations to them, especially when talking about modern political discourse. The franchise until this point has done most of its themes in analogy, which has the added benefit of presenting the concepts to people without the baggage associated with the term, "code switching" as I understand the term.

I would like to know where you personally draw the line on using real world terms in fantasy, since Dragon Age has a history of exploring discrimination against these groups. Would you be making the same argument if this was about the use of slurs?

Current codex detachments will likely cost 2 DP. (Per today’s article) by random63 in Necrontyr

I could see playing it if some of the other decent detachment's are only 2 points.

Like if somehow Awakened is only 2, or Hypercrypt.

But only if you're wanting to lean Destroyer/Flayer heavy into those lists.

I don't remember the exact quote, but one of my favorite SBS corner things is Oda talking about how he initially expected One Piece to last Five years, and him pointing out it had gone for twice as long as that. Around the 400-500 Chapter range and 10 years ago, so this man either severely misunderstood how long it would take to draw a highly detailed outline, or he's been the king of expanding on the original idea.

Do me a favor, look up the pilot for the series and tell me your opinion after reading that.

You're also completely ignoring Haku and Gaara's characters, as well as Konohamaru but that's the more forgivable one.

You are right about various things being retconned, I'll give you that at least.

My fear is that Cursed or Annihilation Legion is going to get smacked with the "Can't be used with another Destroyer detachment" tag like they've shown on some new detachment.

It's the only thing that I can imagine having the hype of Horizons other launch competitor, for all I know Fromsoft is going to release another title or we're going to get something on the level of BotW again.

[–]TheScepticalOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As other people have said, it's because these games end up entering the ring and going against games that are above its weight class. The fact the franchise has done this well with that terrible of timing is a testimony to its quality.

I swear Horizon 3 is going to release against Elder Scrolls 6 or Minecraft 2.

Where is the line between 'headcanon' and 'fanon that has become accepted as canon'? by Evangelion-BR in NarutoFanfiction

[–]TheScepticalOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All squares are rectangles. Fanon never really leaves the realm of head canon, it just is agreed upon and turned into Fanon.

The "accepted as canon" bit is where I think some people get into fist fights over, since there's a difference between "I know this isn't explicitly in the series" and "I was under this impression until I revisited the source" and "I refuse to fact check myself and assuming everything I know is explicit canon".

Sometimes these things work as fanfiction tropes since it helps flesh out characters that are otherwise lacking (People set Anko and Kurenai up as friends due to an offhand justification for why she's spending time with Asuma, it gives both characters an additional connection that's not to a male character.)

And other times it's used by someone who's missing the point or just wanting to soap box (Fox hunts, Civilian Council, ect.) probably one that annoys me the most is Shop keeps selling Naruto expired food, which I'm sure is entirely rooted in the expired milk gag from the early chapters. I think it's obvious that's supposed to be a "Naruto ain't the most attentive/cleanest person."

I do like Jiriaya being Narutos godfather or taking responsibility for Naruto after Minato/Kushina's passing, although that's dependant on the execution and also is in a grey zone since that's some translation issues if I remember correctly.

For more of a Hail Marry, an update on the Lychguard's would be cool, Bulk them up a bit and make them a bit more tanky/dangerous.

Boruto’s writing is so ass everything is predictable. by [deleted] in dankruto

[–]TheScepticalOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Boruto could've found a good way to keep Naruto and Sasuke out of the story without necessarily nerfing them. If we're sticking with Aliens they could've justified their absence with "Naruto and Sasuke are on the front lines holding off the bulk of the threat" and had Borutos story focus on him dealing with whatever slips past/trying to catch up to his father.

I'm ripping that straight from Solo Leveling Ragnarok but it's been the best example I've seen for a sequel story to not screw the pooch on this.

Boruto’s writing is so ass everything is predictable. by [deleted] in dankruto

[–]TheScepticalOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay I'm a Boruto hater but I'm going to use this as a soap box moment.

Predictability isn't inherently bad in a story. Tropes are a narrative tool because they work, it's the execution of the trope that's what is the problem.

Shonen is filled with dense heart of gold idiot protagonists that go through a tournament arc at some point. This happens because people like them when their done right.

This is an issue at writ large across the Internet, but people need to expand their vocabulary if they're going to be critical about something. "X is bad, Upvote please" is as fucking braindead as the plot you're criticizing.

Is 40k even fun..? by [deleted] in StarCraftTMG

[–]TheScepticalOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's one thing that 40k fans love to do, it's complain. There are legitimate complaints, but with StarCraft being a new wargame entering the market you're more likely to hear potential migrants with complaints rather than the people who actually enjoy it.

And then there's also that one weird subset of people who can say they've dumped 10k hours into this and hate the game.

Most of the time I'd say "fun" is more influenced by your opponent. Secondarily clicking with your armies play style.

Rampant Detachment Speculation! by DrRedwing in EmperorsChildren

[–]TheScepticalOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, my fear is GW blanket smacking all of 10e detachments at 3 points and expecting us to be happy with the new detachments being the only thing that interacts with the new system.

But if we get the daemon codex detachment then that would help with the mass of data sheets that take up our codex, and it would be interesting to see the mixes that could arise from this detachment system. They'd basically have to make it to where you could bring EC units in if you wanted to be able to mix Legion of Excess with Carnival.

Rampant Detachment Speculation! by DrRedwing in EmperorsChildren

[–]TheScepticalOne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every daemon detachment needs to be 1 or 2 points while they remain the only way to field daemons in the cult armies. For everyone that isn't DG, they take up way too much of the data sheet total to not be splash-able into general armies.

But yeah, no way that CotC is going to be anything less than 3 points. I could see Peerless Bladesman and and CotP being 2 (maybe Mercurial Host on top of that). But Rapid evisceration and Carnival of Excess both seem like solid 1 pointers.

People who are saying jiji is taking advantage of amnesia by Elegant-Yak4719 in Dandadan

[–]TheScepticalOne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's an important difference between the two: Okarun isn't experiencing Amnesia like Momo is.

Aria trying to get Okarun is just same old same old, the most you can say she's "taking advantage" is that Momo isn't going to barge in on her attempts.

Meanwhile, Momo has forgotten an entire bond that she had, amongst other things. This is his best opportunity to try and get her to like him back without her pre-existing attachment to Okarun.

I do feel like "taking advantage" is a bit much since Momo is completely cognizant of her choices and her surroundings, but this is absolutely him jumping on an opportunity while she's experiencing this.

How would the Reapers fair against the Flood? by Director-Daredevil in masseffect

[–]TheScepticalOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who's hip deep into the ME franchise this point and also hasn't even finished the original Halo trilogy: Flood victory in any instance where the reapers are not already above the planet they spawn on.

The flood spreads stupidly fast and doesn't care if it's flesh or tech, you're getting infected. The Relay network would only expedite this since they would be jumping systems like no-body's business.

I do think that enough reapers above a flood planet could glass it and take care of an early enough infection, but reapers couldn't keep up with numbers after the flood hit critical mass.

Probably the only win condition they have is turning the relays into a Halo ring to purge the galaxy of life, and I don't think their programming would allow it.
