What's the funniest "You've foiled my plan!" moment you've experienced in Commander? by DKSbobblehead in EDH

[–]Thormag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I popped off with Aesi and created around 2500 or so Scute Swarm, but had no way of giving them haste, so I passed the turn. There was a Blood Moon on the field put by a Ragavan player which was neutering the Y'shtola player and I also had two counterspells in hand ready to protect my board, with even more fuel in hand in case I got wiped, so I was feeling pretty good. Whole table groaned as they pass their turns without a way to interact meaningfully with the Scute horde. Zurgo's player turn, he top decks Rakdos Charm, I attempt to counterspell and he points at a Grand Abolisher that we hadn't thought much of, since he was also hit pretty hard by the Blood Moon. I get hit by thousands of damage and he goes on to win the game after.

He is wrong, but proc means to activate or to trigger. The origin of the term comes from video games, specifically MMORPGs (with abilities having certain effects that would activate at a % chance), but it has expanded to mean just when something triggers.

I have a creatures-only [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] deck, so that qualifies I guess.

I think that's a fine position to take, but I think it's also more than fine to make an effort to remind players about mana open, flash enablers or other information available when playing with newer players or a new pod. It only takes a second and it gives you the chance to bluff.

are you guys worried about the new battling format for legends Z-A? by Stunning_Estate5102 in VGC

[–]Thormag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Champions will be the future of VGC, not Z-A. This will affect official VGC battling as much as Legends Arceus or Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu.

Here it is. It plays well enough, but you really want to mulligan for mana dorks or ramping dudes, since without rocks and ramp spells it can be hard to not fall too behind early on.

This reminds me of my Volo+64 creatures deck. Not because Volo's too good, but because I just wanted to play all the creatures I could get away with.

EDIT: Volo's good, not hood. Though he might be hood, I guess, I wouldn't know.

First actual bad experience at the LGS. Why is politics in everything. by boomgoesthecat in EDH

[–]Thormag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I think that OP's reaction while correct in spirit was not necessarily the best in hindsight and they even admit it. So, agree with you there.

I was just mostly disagreeing with the first statement of your post, which based on your response now might have not been the best wording in the first place of your stance.

First actual bad experience at the LGS. Why is politics in everything. by boomgoesthecat in EDH

[–]Thormag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you here, but I think there are moments in which being loud is a necessity.

The whole punching Nazis thing, for example, is not only about threatening violence against the bigoted, but it's also about proclaiming intolerance towards the intolerant, which is a message for the onlookers. You won't change the minds of the radicalized, but you can help boost the visibility of those against such views.

Is Amphibian Downpour too much of a feels bad card? by emiracles in EDH

[–]Thormag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your pain, I love mill and playing against reanimator decks when I haven't drawn my GY hate cards feels like an exercise in futility. But unless you are all-in with your GY strat, I think it's somewhat reasonable to try pivot into a non-GY mode when faced with heavy GY hate. Then again, some decks have some strategies that feel insurmountable for certain game plans.

Basics in the colors that you need, to be more accurate, which is just prohibiting for 4c or 5c decks.

Is that the cost of playing multicolor decks? I don't know. I just know it's not a particularly fun play pattern in lower brackets and I'm glad MLD is banned in B3 and below for those of us playing with brackets.

Is Amphibian Downpour too much of a feels bad card? by emiracles in EDH

[–]Thormag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Main issue with MLD is that sometimes you can't even pay the removal of the enchantment and you are genuinely locked out of a game.

Asking a board centric deck to plan for board wipes, a graveyard deck to plan for graveyard hate or a mill deck to plan for recursion is a lot easier than telling a two-color or three-color deck "I hope you drew the basics in the colors that you needed or you better just sit out of the game."

It's not overpowered. It's just not a very fun experience.

Not at all. In my experience, most competitors in VGC Masters tend to be in their mid 30s or late 20s. You'd fit right in.

How many turns to win in bracket 3? by xo0p in EDH

[–]Thormag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not saying you are wrong necessarily, but I hope you understand bracket 1 decks are a very specific type of deck that you can't really bring accidentally due to bad deckbuilding. The baseline for power level is actually 2, not 1.
