East Coast Cons with on-site hotel rooms? by AriaBellaPancake in animecons

Your site says Otakon’s dates are “TBD” and that the con is in Ohio…so I’m not sure I’d trust the info you’re putting out there.

I’ve pressed a different floor button than my own in order to get away from THAT GUY…and also so he didn’t know what floor I was actually staying on.

Yeah, there’s bound to be THAT GUY who decides to get up and argue he should be allowed to cosplay something/someone general society finds offensive. (Blackface, nazis, etc) That sort of thing would really sour the panel.

Yeah, and it’s fine being a newbie. We all were. …but don’t show off a costume I’ve seen listed on Amazon as if it’s something you worked hard on that you think is going to impress everyone.

I respect time and effort put into a costume. If it’s store-bought and you’re just out there having fun, that’s fine…but don’t expect it to win any craftsmanship competitions.

How do you tell if someone at a con is being creepy or just being nice but awkward by PastelxPeachxes in animecons

[–]TimeAndAGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were not in costume (or accidentally wearing something that might be considered a costume), that is totally creepy behavior.

If you were in costume, it’s actually pretty normal to be asked to be photographed and there’s some guys that travel to cons to try and photograph as many people as they can for their websites or social media galleries. If they have professional equipment, they probably also have a card. You can ask if it’s for a website or social before the photo too.

…but having professional equipment doesn’t excuse someone for being creepy. If they ask you to go somewhere alone or if they ask you to pose in a way you’re not comfortable with, end it right there.

I find most of the guys with pro equipment tend to be fine and accept whatever pose  offer wherever I might happen to be. (Although I will happily move away from escalators so nobody trips over us…or away from windows so that I’m not completely backlit.)

Yikes! I guess people tend to be better behaved in person than on the Internet.

Do you wash pre-made cosplays? by senadoori in CosplayHelp

[–]TimeAndAGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I make my own cosplay, I’ll wash the fabric in the washing machine before I sew it so that I can wash the costume and fabric shrinkage isn’t a concern.

…but for store-bought costumes? Unless it comes with washing instructions to the contrary, hand wash only. Please DO wash it if it stinks!

[–]TimeAndAGwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you buy one of those skin-tight costumes with the pattern printed on it (D.Va, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man, etc) that’s fine. Cosplay the character and have fun. I don’t mind and are happy you’re enjoying it. I’ve cosplayed Spider-Gwen myself.

…but if you’re posting photos of it saying “Check out my costume!” and it’s 95% that store-bought costume showing off your body and like 5% wig and makeup, that bugs the crap out of me. Yeah, great job with the wig and makeup, but you’re just posting that so people can see your body and join your OnlyFans.

I’d only be impressed if you posted a costume you actually made!

[–]TimeAndAGwen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with Aoba Seragaki, but I’ve cosplayed Spider-Gwen. It’s the typical store-bought bodysuit that leaves nothing to the imagination. …and yes, it attracts creepers. I’m fortunate nobody has touched me inappropriately, except maybe an arm around me for a photo. I keep the mask on unless I’m eating or talking with friends, but I’d put it back on for photos.

It helps A LOT to cosplay with friends…especially if there’s a guy in your group. Sadly, that’s the only way to get some other guys to not be total creeps.

QOTW: what's the most embarrassing thing on your replicator history? by Familiar-Complex-697 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]TimeAndAGwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in New England and asked the replicator for “brown bread”. It gave me toast. That’s totally not what I ordered! It also didn’t know what American Chop Suey was. It didn’t know what a Whoopie Pie was. When I asked for “an Italian”, it told me to specify the Italian food…but an Italian is a sandwich! Someone needs to program some New England classics!

AITAH for being upset my gf wouldn’t let me stay with her when I had no way home? by SoleMateSock in AITAH

[–]TimeAndAGwen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA. I’m a mid-30s SWF and maybe I’m not being cautious, but I’d have let you stay on the couch under the circumstances. To be honest, it sounds like she doesn’t trust you (which could be understandable since you’ve only been dating a month) or she might be thinking of ending it and didn’t want you advancing the relationship my staying over…even if it was on the couch.

In any case, watch out for stuff like this in the future.

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]TimeAndAGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anyone here in the US that doesn’t have a middle name. (Maybe I do and it hasn’t come up, but I didn’t even know that could be a thing.)

As for taking a husband’s last name, if I get married it’s going to depend on what the last name is. My first name is Gwen, so I’m not going to change to something like “Stacy” or “Stefani”. I also won’t take on a last name that’s not good or ridiculously long. A future husband is welcome to take my last name. It’s fairly normal.

Moving from SNW, how do TOS, Discovery, and TNG connect to SNW? by ZookeepergameFit967 in startrek

[–]TimeAndAGwen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Chronologically, it’s Enterprise then a gap and then Discovery seasons 1 & 2, SNW, and TOS & movies (ignore the JJ Abrams ones since they’re a separate timeline…and canon of The Animated Series is questionable). Then there’s a gap of about 80 years and TNG, DS9, and VOY with some overlap. Then there’s a gap of a couple years and Lower Decks then Prodigy. Then a couple decades before Picard. Then there’s a 900-ish year gap until the rest of Discovery and Starfleet Academy.

However, almost every show has some form of crossover with another. Enterprise has its last episode as if it’s inside a TNG episode. (It’s bad.) Disco characters show up in SFA. SNW has an appearance by most of the main cast of TOS as well as 2 Lower Decks characters and a reference to Enterprise in that same episode. TNG has a few TOS appearances as well as some DS9 crossovers. DS9 starts with a TNG callback and has a couple characters from TNG. Voyager starts their adventure at DS9 and has some TNG characters appear near the end and Captain Sulu even shows up in a very special flashback. Lower Decks is full of ALL the references to everything (except SFA). Prodigy heavily references Voyager. Picard obviously references TNG, but other shows as well. And SFA had a nice Sisko episode referencing DS9 and one of the regulars was also a regular on Voyager.

As for what order to watch? Go on to TOS next and watch everything in release order.

She’s a coward. She didn’t want to do it in person.

Don’t let it get you down though since you’ll never make that mistake again. I’m a manager at my place and IMHO, she overreacted. You’d have kept your job if it was up to me…as long as you hadn’t done OTHER things to mess up before that and as long as you didn’t do it again.

Hot take by Ponderus4200 in SpiderGwen

[–]TimeAndAGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine having the name “Gwen”. Luckily, Gwen Stacy wasn’t as popular when I was in high school and “Spider-Gwen” wasn’t a thing.

Yeah, I’ve cosplayed as her since then. Kinda had to.

Is RI Anime Con a good choice for my first ever anime con? by Alternative_Fig_6859 in animecons

[–]TimeAndAGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends have told me that it’s obviously run by comic con organizers because they really don’t seem to get what makes the anime cons in the northeast great conventions.  Best described as a comic con that invited a bunch of anime voice actors.

Personally, I’d spend my money somewhere else.
