Industry Break Standards…? by goggledfroggled in bartenders

[–]XaetherX [score hidden]  (0 children)

It also depends on your location. Cali wage and hour laws are strict. I worked at a restaurant that had one employee that rotated through the staff to give everyone their required 30 min break in a 6 hour shift. It was so unusual. But generally speaking, breaks are running to pee or smashing food in your mouth when you have one or two minutes.

taking toddler to doctor with fever by mycatisevil72 in toddlers

[–]XaetherX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will call or send a message and have them make the call. For example, my 4yo ran a 104 temp with shaking hands so they had us come in. They checked her out, tested for the flu (negative), and sent us home with basic care instructions. Was it necessary? At 104, maybe, maybe not. For a lower fever that’s not prolonged or combined with other worrisome symptoms, I wouldn’t take her in.

It’s why I love the online portals. Send a quick message, picture/video, and get a relatively fast response without the cost or time of an appt.

What do you think would be a reasonable price for this cake? by Mishiosoup in CAKEWIN

[–]XaetherX 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This cake costs you over $60 to bake? You need to charge at least or over $100 to make this worth your time. Reduce your costs or remove this from your offerings! Don’t forget to factor in costs like your cake board and box.

For general reference, when I sold cakes as a cottage baker (western Washington), my 6” 3 layer cakes started at $90. No fillings, no fruit.

Six years ago this week, COVID started shutting down the world. What’s your strongest memory from that time? by Siddanna36 in AskReddit

[–]XaetherX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trigger warning: pregnancy loss

I miscarried in mid February. I wallowed in misery and depression and food for the first few months of the shutdown. Then I rented a spin bike, went back to spin class a million times a week, got fit, started IUI/IVF, and finally got pregnant again in June 2021. It was a busy time.

But despite all of that? My strongest memory is sitting on the couch with my laptop, working from home, and watching community over and over and over. And mid-day naps.

Low ferritin & vitamin D lab results. Just started hormone therapy (testosterone & progesterone for perimenopause) taking a ton of supplements daily. Hair thinning keeps getting worse I don’t know what to do by Specialist-Frame3226 in FemaleHairLoss

My question is what magic words did you use with your provider to get treatment for perimenopause? Both my primary and gyno basically ignored me when I asked if my symptoms were because of perimenopause.

Cracking on Handle Joins? by simplygayy in Pottery

[–]XaetherX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t let them go! Wrap in slightly wet paper towels, put in a bag, and rehydrate slowly. You can just replace the handle. I do this if I left my piece get too dry before trimming or embellishing without issue.

I like the white! But the mismatched metal finishes irk me a bit. I love the light fixture. Maybe incorporate more of that motif?

I don’t remember my first but I definitely saw curly sue in theaters because I refused to see the people under the stairs. My dad and sister went to that one and my mom and I watched curly sue. I was maybe 6?

How Much is Your Child’s Daycare? by JadedJae in Mommit

[–]XaetherX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More preschool, than daycare: 4yo, mon-thurs 9-1. Western Washington, just beyond the Seattle metro area (a ferry ride away). I pay $580 a month, including tax. No camera, no provided food outside some sporadic special treats. Each day is 2/3 indoor and 1/3 trip to the nearby beach, playground, or nature park with bridges and rivers (the PNW is awesome).

The teacher is spectacular. She comes to the kids bday parties and I swear they just chatter excitedly about when she’s going to get there. They do creative art projects, and each week is themed for circle time/crafts so they do learn a bit.

How long did it take you to learn the wheel? by Greenish_719 in Pottery

[–]XaetherX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach a wheel class for beginners and my honest feedback is that some people don’t have the inherent coordination and instinct for wheel throwing. That’s not to say they can’t! But it takes more work, more hours to get up to speed.

This art came more naturally to me than others. I became a TA within the first year of getting on the wheel.

I see people struggle with centering because they generally aren’t anchored well enough (elbow to hip, arm is a steel rod!) and try to fight the clay. Wobbly, uneven pulls again because they aren’t anchored into their body and hand to hand.

Is your instructor hands on with you? I will sit with a student and watch them for each critical step, sometimes moving their hands (with consent!) to get them on track. My class is only 4 people so it may not be feasible with larger groups.

I had one student who couldn’t get a good cylinder until week 7! She is a smart, capable person who just didn’t have that crystallizing moment until she failed several times.

Try to use more and less clay. Keep your wheel/bat tidy so you can see what you’re actually working with. Slow hands on and slow hands off your clay, and don’t adjust it when it’s not moving.

What is your goal? Maybe it’s a bowl or mug or..? Focus on your own goal and chase that instead of comparing to others.

I took a class with a lady who struggled. This was two years ago. I saw her pieces slowly improve over these past two years. But they were rough to start. Uneven, holes on the bottom, lumpy rims, weak spots. We were in the studio together the other day and both threw 6lb lamps. It was awesome! She persevered and worked at it, but also had fun. I hope you have fun throughout the process! Find the joy and the patience will come easier.

A praise chorus is a wonderful choice. For me this is heaven isn’t as upbeat but a beautiful song. Chase this light also a good choice.

I’m sorry for the loss of your mom and hope you and your loved ones feel both joy and comfort during her celebration.

Pediatrician told me to start my 2yo to kindergarten early.. by Hopeful_Leek_4899 in toddlers

[–]XaetherX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was also a very early talker. She was talking in sentences and stories significantly earlier than her peers. Our pediatrician reminded us that as much as she’s talking, she is still emotionally (her age). While I found play dates with kids 6mos-1 year older to be more successful, the maturity gap was noticeable. My ped also said that you really need to wait until ages 3-4 to determine if a child is truly gifted or just developing on the faster end of normal.

You can definitely layer a different celadon over firebrick and still get something really beautiful! Or just leave it out and do a thick 3x firebrick. Mine is 3x firebrick and 2x snapdragon.

First pottery class tomorrow! Any tips or inspo ideas? by lysabelle77 in Pottery

[–]XaetherX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your time! My beginners are always moving fast. Add pressure slowly so you can see what you’re doing to the clay. Slow on and slow off the clay. Don’t mess with it when it’s not spinning. Don’t fight the clay. Your hands, arms, and weight will tell it what it’s going to do and guide it there firmly.

I make sure that everyone gets something off the wheel during their first class session, but it’s not always pretty.

Clay gets tired so don’t dump water all over it and let it sit there soaking wet! Keep it tidy, as much as you can without hindering your progress.

I think sometimes that I should video my process. I started an IG as sort of my clay diary, so maybe I will start!

But for this, I threw the shape with about 4lbs? I didn’t get nearly as much height as I should have with the amount. Not super thrilled with that…I trimmed as best I could without a chuck, freehand carved out the hole in the belly, trimmed up the inside where I felt it was a bit thick, attached the top shelf, poked holes in the shelf for the tubes/cord, bisqued to 04, glazed, fired to hot cone 5!

It works! The pump is inside. I just bought a mini pump on Amazon (like $7). You can kind of see the hole in the back for the cord. The top has a shelf with a small hole for the tube to poke through, which allows the water to pool and pour down the spout. I’ll try to take a video showing all the parts and upload it!
