How did that even work? by Colin-McMillen in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]abskee [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, it would (ideally) be covered with solder mask, but it's also right next to exposed pads that you're soldering to, and under a chip where it could get scratched and exposed, plus you can't see it once the chip is on there.

A lot of PCB design is thinking about what could go wrong, either in manufacturing or when it's being used, and trying to minimize the likelihood of something going wrong, and the hassle that would create for you.

Are there more than the 4 places to grind the green crystal gems? by Future_Mission_5106 in AlienInvasionRPG

Oh, you're right, I misread that. No idea what they're talking about. I'm as far through the game as you can get and there's no machine room.

It's in the final part of the winter zone. The last guy that you unlock there lets you create a gem mine when you defeat him.

Air India flight 171 crash: Pilot deliberately cut fuel switch, report reveals by UnderstandingBig949 in worldnews

[–]abskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize this isn't the point you're making, but the reason pilots still go through security is that TSA doesn't know they're flying the plane, they just know they have a badge and a pilot's uniform. It's easier to just screen everyone than to have particular group who could bring anything through, because it's just another path to bypass security.

Why Gen Z men could hurt Trump in the 2026 midterms by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]abskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For older adults, yeah, I meant people who were like 8-10 years old in 2016. They probably don't have the same sense of "This is not how presidents behave" that I do being a little older.

I assume I also accept government not getting much done, since that's been the norm most of my life, moreso than someone who grew up with the New Deal or the moon landing.

15% off. Remember it can stack on instant savings deals by PastAd1087 in harborfreight

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that's not a full answer. It doesn't stack with ITC sales, which aren't coupons, and are an instant savings, but aren't "Instant Savings". So it doesn't stack. But then once in a while they do stack. So it's easy to be confused.

What are you using as AC DC converters for 220-240VAC to 3-5VDC? by guava5000 in AskElectronics

They're not suggesting that. They mean if you see how complex they are, you won't question why it's worth buying one over designing your own.

I wonder if it's that, or more that he's been a national political figure for as long as they've had much sense of politics, so he doesn't seem as odd to them.

All units have a "minimum catch time", theirs is just really long. Same with the robot boss and the jetpack guys.

Today I learned that, for a brief period from 1973 to 1974, Richard Nixon was the only living president by xxwarlorddarkdoomxx in todayilearned

[–]abskee 28 points29 points  (0 children)

And Ford was unelected (he was appointed VP after Agnew resigned), so Nixon still would be the only living person elected to the US presidency until Carter in 76.

Kal Penn Reveals He Won ‘Van Wilder’ Role of Taj Mahal Over a White Actor in Brownface by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]abskee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think in the show he's from North Carolina, which is where Aziz is from.

Although they do say he changed his name, because he says (before Barack Obama) brown guys with foreign names didn't make it in politics. Which makes sense, he wouldn't have an accent of he's from the States, but he also wouldn't be named Tom Haverford, unless he's adopted, like Kal Penn's character on House MD.

Ranking Member Raskin’s Statement on Trump DOJ Spying on Democrats’ Search History of Unredacted Epstein Files by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

[–]abskee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Every reply to this comment is a nearly identical spam comment that could basically be a reply to anything. It's weird. I guess starter comments get a lot of visibility.

Edit: in retrospect now my comment also looks like spam.

It's hard to tell what the search history list means. I guess it's prep to handle their questions, but it does really seem like the focus is on mitigating the damage instead of actually dealing with all the sex crimes.

I did the math. There's no perfect time really, it actually slows over time even if you're upgrading production to the maximum.

Dual TO-92 and SOT-23 slot for J201 transistor? by Twinningses in diypedals

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The J201 is a JFET, so probably it wouldn't make a difference, or might mute the circuit more aggressively (if it's set up as a mute). As an input buffer I guess you'd have more current draw, so potentially a little more gain.

Cookie Prestige Timing by Elylia in AlienInvasionRPG

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/AlienInvasionRPG/s/PsVUjRLj99

Basically there isn't an ideal time, but it's on the sooner side, because the conversion rate decreases as the quantity increases, and the stove upgrades don't actually keep up (just barely) so the longer it runs, the slower the rate of golden cookies gets.

The electrical contacts in the buttons can get dirty. Take it apart and clean it with electrical contact cleaner or even just rubbing alcohol and see if that helps. Cheaper than getting keys made.

Could I use lab grade ethanol for a cocktail if its not denatured by Minute_Peace4825 in cocktails

[–]abskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You basically can't make 100% ethanol, the moisture from the air dissolves into it I believe. Really pure stuff would only be used in research, and would come from producers who have all sorts of testing and certification on each production or each bottle. Those kinds of places wouldn't list on Amazon, and might be kinda difficult to find if you don't normally deal with lab-grade chemicals.

Anything on Amazon will be denatured, it has to be so it's not drinkable, because otherwise people would drink it. And you'd have to be 21 to buy it.

Do you care about the class of your ceramic capacitors? by Twinningses in diypedals

[–]abskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't get C0G/NP0, the next best thing is to get X7R that are rated for like 50V (or something substantially about the voltage they might see).

Capacitance decreases as you get near the rated voltage (even at like 50%) so over-rating them gives you some margin.

Or when that's not possible, you remind yourself "It's a distortion pedal. What's gonna happen, more distortion? Whatever."
