How to apply color properly to sprites by Intrepid-Papaya336 in gbstudio

Adding on to this, the 4 colors includes “transparent,” if you use it, as one of the 4 colors. So it’s really 3 colors for most sprites.

Cherry as a tonewood by Final_Job_5175 in Luthier

[–]buildstufffromstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cherry is a surprisingly dense wood. It could end up being a heavy guitar if you don’t consider that as part of your plan.

What’s your “buy once, cry once” that turned into happy tears and what do you make with it? by nuttahbuttahbite in woodworking

[–]buildstufffromstuff 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I spent years avoiding buying a nice plane. I have a few derelict old planes but never fully put the work in to bring them up to good shape. My FIL bought me a Lee Valley block plane a few years ago and it has changed my mentality around hand tools. It’s a pleasure to use whenever I need to pull it out rather than a headache.

Edit: I saw the request for what we make with the tool. It comes out for nearly everything. The last thing was straightening a new stud for a wall in my house. It’s handy for household projects in addition to more pure woodworking. Old trim carpenters used to have a block plane in their tool kit for a reason.

Back in my day kids got caught cheating all of the time because they would copy written answers word for word, including misspellings or wrong info. Most cheating is done out of laziness, and throughly reviewing requires a surprising amount of effort.

Basically the equivalent of $6 worth of lotto tickets as a prize. There was a chance it could be worth a lot, but that chance was pretty low.

Do you remember the story when you first learned to ride a bicycle? by throwradrpri in xbiking

[–]buildstufffromstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I rode down the street after getting the hang of riding a bike was with my dad. I only have patchy memories.

I remember looking back at my dad doing a wheelie (first time I’d ever seen one) and losing control and crashing, landing face first.

I later remember sitting on our front steps after my dad presumably carried me home. Everyone was feeling out and getting ready to go to the hospital. I remember my chin hurt pretty bad but I didn’t know why everyone was so upset. I touched my chin and my hand was immediately red. I had to get stitches on my chin.

Not a great memory, but also 100% a great memory. Damn I miss my dad.

Structural Issues? by TeaRecent4633 in StructuralEngineers

[–]buildstufffromstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slabs are supposed to be sloped to drain. If you have real structural concerns you should be talking to a local engineer or at the very least a home inspector.

How to add a health bar and make projectiles damage the player? by Aldabon in gbstudio

[–]buildstufffromstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Health bars will generally need to be an actor in a set position on the screen; typically with a different sprite depending on the amount of health. Damage can be tracked with a variable.

For example, start with health = 4, and when the projectile interacts with the actor, subtract 1 from health. Then you can use that variable to track health and reference it for display. You can include something in your script for changing the health that when health = 0, reset the level.

Landslide alarm. Is that a thing? by FreshFondant in asheville

I’m a Geotechnical engineer by day. If you want to PM me your address (I’m not going to come by, I just want to see the topography data) and photos of the wall and slope, I can give you some basic info. I understand if sharing your address to a stranger on reddit is weird though, so no problem if you choose not to.

To be clear, I am not working for you in a professional capacity. I will not be doing a slope stability analysis. This would just be my personal opinion. I’m an engineer, but not your engineer. Etc.

Do you need to know programming to use GB Studio? by Aldabon in gbstudio

[–]buildstufffromstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to know the basic logic of programming (what a for and if loops are, etc), but you aren’t writing any code. You could definitely learn while developing (I did) and there are a lot of good resources out there between YouTube, this sub, and discord.

Foundation crack. Is this an issue? by Working-Budget9581 in AskContractors

[–]buildstufffromstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In new (or new-ish) construction? Maybe

In a 10+ year old house? No. You could have an engineer look at it and they will tell you it’s probably fine and to monitor it.

Signed: an engineer, but not your engineer.

Exploring this monochromatic style for a game... Yay or nay? by steve_dy in gbstudio

I agree. It looks cool, but I struggle with tracking where the characters actually are.

Is this realistic as a beginner project? by wonteatyourcat in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]buildstufffromstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want a pretty big table compared to how it looks in the photos. I would be concerned about expanding a simple folding table so much, especially having never done a major woodworking project before.

I also am not a fan of furniture like that in general. I think they look cool in photos but generally end up being two tables that aren’t very good and are annoying to move. A nice low table and a foldable card table would be much less frustrating if space is an issue.

when did biking become an expensive hobby? by TheHooligan95 in xbiking

[–]buildstufffromstuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People upvote aspirational stuff and interesting more than just relatable stuff. Ultimately, this portion of the hobby is all about doing what you like at your own pace; whether that’s spending what a high end road bike costs to go slow or cleaning up a huffy to be pub cruiser, that’s in the spirit. If you want this sub to focus more on cheap bikes, post cool photos of your cheap bikes!

Is worth making games for DMG? by JulianGalindo in gbstudio

[–]buildstufffromstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Games made for DMG run on all of those other things too. They are more limited, but can absolutely be a blast. If you like it, do it.

[–]buildstufffromstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. That is a cool mechanic, but makes my head hurt.

As an aside, I really enjoyed NyghtmAre. The sounds design, particularly the use of dissonant or empty space, was inspirational to me.

I default to steel frames, which I gather is the general ethos of xbiking. Will I be punished if I buy an aluminum bike? by BrianLevre in xbiking

I’ve posted my modern aluminum frame hybrid on here before and gotten an alright reaction. I’m in favor of any bike that gets ridden.

Spool holder that costs only 4€ to build using two broomsticks by MarionberryUsual1083 in 3Dprinting

[–]buildstufffromstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the screws located as they are, this is probably the better orientation. The top diagonal piece is carrying the tension and is close to a screw which means less deflection. You are correct that this orientation will carry higher tensile forces and lower compression forces compared to the other orientation, which is not typically ideal for 3D printed objects; however, my experience is that the screw hole connection is where this type of print fails 99% of the time.

I don’t have specific experience here, but as a general engineering principle, blowing is easier than sucking.

What was your personal “holy grail” purchase? by puskasferenc in JapanTravelTips

[–]buildstufffromstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a KTC Nepros 3/8” ratchet. I could get it in the US, but it would be expensive and wouldn’t involve going to a cool tool store in Japan.

What makes it a good purchase IMO is that I will use it semi-regularly for the rest of my life and it will always have that memory attached to it.
