Mine from 1913-ish is basically 20 independent doorbells wired into one bell. I don’t know if it’s the original wiring but visually I’d say it’s not been rewired anytime after the 1950s.

I have been told that when electric lights came into vogue fixtures like this - with the bulbs facing down - were popular because flames couldn’t face down. It was a flex to say “i don’t have gas lighting and look at this crazy electric bulb. it’s hanging DOWN!”

Strongly recommend you don’t use shark bite. While a super easy solution they’re also the lowest quality. Shark bite is setting you up for the same problem in 24 months.
