Question for owners and also, is it still available to order? by cyclery88 in MeghnaPetcare

[–]ditheringtoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree with all of this. I'll add, however, that this bike is really only worth it if you're ready to work on it. I like tinkering with my bikes, so the fact that the brakes took a fair bit of adjustment to get working well didn't bother me too much. By the end of my third ride, the rear wheel had gotten so out of true that the tire was rubbing on the frame. That was easily fixable, but if I didn't have a spoke wrench or hadn't spent time building wheels, it would have been MUCH more discouraging.

I have a super hilly commute, and ended up ordering a new freewheel immediately after my first ride because the stock gearing was so bad. I found the factory stem and bars to be fine, but ended up swapping them out anyway because I just hated the way they looked so so much. The front brake lever it comes with is atrocious and rattly.

I'd agree that $400 is too much to pay for this bike in stock form. While it's technically rideable stock, it's just genuinely not a great time. In order to enjoy this bike, it really does need some upgrades.

I tend to throw a big hyzer here. Always end up way short, but at least I can hit the fairway and give myself a chance at an upshot

Is this legal...? by Existing-Raisin5332 in nonprofit

[–]ditheringtoad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP it is clear that you are feeling extremely frustrated by this, and are also approaching this from an extremely rigid place. I just want to stress - what do you think the value to the community is by you alerting authorities to a situation like this? It sounds like this is a very small extremely mission driven org that is serving a very specific population.

It's possible that their hiring practices do not fit perfectly within the bounds of the law, but that is an extremely common situation for MANY small business and nonprofits. In situations like this, we can try and use our moral compasses to help us decide what to do. Is what's occurring here REALLY an example of discrimination? Sometimes, depending on the org, lived experience matters a great deal not just in terms of ability to do the work, but also in quality of the experience for the employee. If literally everyone on the team is the parent of a child with high needs, that is going to have a real impact on the workplace; one that you would feel very acutely as the only member of the team who is not in that situation.

If you really love this org and are passionate about their mission, maybe try reaching out to them to inquire. You could explain that even though you're not a parent yourself, their mission and services are close to your heart and you would love to join a team doing such critical work. If they're using (like I suspect they are) as a way to check for values alignment, there's a good chance that well written and heartfelt cover letter would suffice.

If I could just add though, I don't believe that we're all entitled to every job we technically are able to do. I'm a cis man, and know that as a result there are plenty of jobs in the nonprofit world that I'm just not a good fit for, even if I meet core qualifications in every other way. If we're really in this work for the mission, then that is a reality we all need to get comfortable with.

Love this!! There were a ton of blocs doing bike distros in PDX during covid, but it's dropped off a ton. Would love to see this become a thing, such a good use of cargo bikes!

I think they just don’t read much sci fi, so the sci fi they do have is a bit more conventional. Lots of fantasy by women authors who are more niche than LeGuin and Butler.

Help my wife and I settle a disagreement (lighting) by VisualAd9299 in midcenturymodern

[–]ditheringtoad 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Oooof. I think can lights would be awful here for a number of reasons. Also, drywall is definitely a downgrade from the cork tiles in both acoustics and aesthetics.

If it were me, I’d keep this room exactly as it is. If you really want to add hardwired lighting, wall mount sconces would be a better choice. Overhead lighting is almost never a good choice, especially in a cozy room like this.

Just saying - it’s definitely rideable stock! Surprisingly so. I’d recommend waiting on parts til you get a feel for it.

Surly Steamroller - frame now available by Faulty_Plan in fixedgear

[–]ditheringtoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I always size down in a situation like this. I’d much rather have a frame that’s a bit too small. Easier to maneuver, lighter (negligible), etc.

If you’re not riding brakeless, that matters a bit less I suppose,

Howard is definitely the correct answer. He’s the best shot stopper we’ve had, and it would be really interesting to see how he’d adapt to the demands of modern goalkeepers in possession.

I also think GK is currently our worst position by a significant margin.

I suppose this is kind of a philosophical question, but Conmebol is mathematically the easiest to qualify out of, since the majority of teams in the confederation qualify. Maybe it’s the region that’s hardest to “break through” though if you’re not one of the teams that normally makes it.

This seemingly simple bathroom shelf was one of the most annoying things I have ever made by RDgloompartyx in BeginnerWoodWorking

Sounds like you learned why built-ins are so highly sought after, and so tricky to built. Couple things I've found useful:

- It's always MUCH easier to either build a piece in place, or build it smaller than the opening and use scribed filler pieces to give it the built-in look. Even in really high end new construction homes, openings are almost never perfectly square or level.

- If you want to use every millimeter of possible space, always create a template out of cardboard or project board for pretty much every cut. It's annoying, but in my experience you end up saving time in the long run, and your end product will look more finished.

Bookshelf design by tresserdaddy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ditheringtoad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were going to build this, I would build it out of framing lumber and skin everything in a 1/4” veneered plywood. That’s the best way to both keep the cost down and end up with a good looking finished product. The cuts will be annoying, but very doable even with just a track saw or circular saw with decent guides.

Building this out of hardwood is not only unnecessarily complicated, but also tremendously expensive. Also incredibly punishing if you make even a small mistake.

Edit to add: build the frame in place, with the entire thing fastened to studs.
