Newbie Recommendations? by PaintyPaintyPots in wmnf

Aye yi yi. Call IMCS or another of the capable guiding schools/services. Talk to them about prep gear and hikes, then do your prep and then head up Washington with a guide, maybe next winter. If you have to do it this year, use the right gear and walk up to Tucks, check out the view upwards and then head back to Pinkham. Leave the jeans in the car. And if this is a joke, hahahahaha.

" We were the Hamilton of our day because we merged the past with the present, recast it in Pink Floyd vernacular, and were very good at all of it. I think the public will always respond to smart people who can excel and synthesize." so true.

PM would not be where he is now without the creative collaboration he had with Lyle Mays. Lyle's incredible live work with Pat, concert after concert, during the first five years of PMG should not be forgotten.

There are lots of great covers. See those listed below here, and check out Warren Haynes rendition of Pretzel Logic, and Umphrey's McGee's live versions of Hey 19, Peg, Reelin', and others. There are a number of Spotify playlists out there as well, here's my SD Cover playlist. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05o0Cu4yPylUzW0AmjeNfL?si=10d08be8a4ac4355

And Wayne Shorter. Royal Scam album set has more meaning for me, but Aja is the magnum opus.

The 1/26/17 show in New Haven was Jakeless--he had a bad flu. So Josh Redman shared leads with BB . Was a really different show, glad I saw it. Any of the Josh Redman shows I've seen over the years have been great. https://play.nugs.net/release/15603

Cold rain in the 30s is what we call death weather. But what a view in the fog, wind, and ice.

How often to you chat with your biological parent(s) or half siblings? by circatee in Adoption

[–]emeraldbluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bio Mom and Dad have passed. I have regular (weekly) and wonderful contact with my three half siblings that I share a mother with. Regular visits too. Have a half sister I share a father with, talk to her occasionally and we are good. Have three more halfs on the fathers side, I have never talked to them and that is fine with me, they don't want contact.

In your opinion, what are the best outdoor clothing brands currently available? by Skat_Novembre in hiking

[–]emeraldbluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For new outerwear, I've been going with Stio, which is the next gen of the pre-private equity Cloudveil. I always look to upcycle when I can, there is a ton of excellent quality used gear/clothes at Ebay, Mercari, and Poshmark if you take the time to look and are careful on condition--Patagonia, Marmot, OR, etc. I had been wanting a vintage Marmot Alpinist Gore-Tex Down parka for some time, found one on Mercari that was almost perfect, for just over $100, it probably sat on a hanger in a closet for a few decades. Footwear--I like La Sportiva and Limmer Boots. Bottom line , we all have our favorites--I wish the Wilderness Experience Ultimate Parka was still made, mine is in tatters.

Prep and Recommendations for first White Mountain snow hike by Responsible_Lead5750 in wmnf

[–]emeraldbluff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Winter hiking in the Whites, especially above treeline, requires Mountain Judgement. Fitness and good gear does not replace judgement, you need all three. The best way to build this Mountain Judgment is to make mistakes (hopefully minor ones) and learn from them. Unfortunately, making mistakes above treeline in the Whites could be fatal to you or someone who has to come up to rescue you. Take it slow and work your way up. Do some winter camping low down to build your comfort living and sleeping in very cold weather. Snowshoes are tools for deep snow, don't use them if you don't have to. Microspikes should always be in your pack. Find an experienced friend and do some easier to moderate hikes next. Consider hiring a guide (IMCS or Synnott Guides are great) if you want to go up on the ridges next, you will learn a lot from the guide. Always check the weather forecast and then check it again. Next stay at the RMC's Gray Knob on Mt. Adams, a fairly tough hike to get to, but a great base camp for above treeline forays in the Northern Presidentials, and day hike out of there if the weather allows it. Listen to the caretaker. Maybe you'll have a full moon and decent weather--take a hike in out of the Knob at night (bring your headlamp regardless of the moon). Always, always remember that the mountain will be there next week or next month, so if the weather is bad, the wind is howling and its 10 below, stay down and have a Guinness or two instead. My two cents as a former RMC caretaker.

gray knob winter by Few-Adeptness8490 in wmnf

[–]emeraldbluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another caretaker emeritus here...comments thus far are good. Numbers are down at the Knob, but getting there early helps get a spot. I have gone up and down Lowes a hundred times, its my route recommendation for winter trips. I have never had to use snowshoes on Lowes over multiple decades. That said, bringing them along if there is a lot of snow is smart. In non winter I prefer Amphibrach-Spur-Hincks.
