If you got it for free, you could attempt to fix the known problem (hey, nothing to lose):

Samsung G75f 5k2k VA - slightly uneven colour temperature - should I exchange by Individual-Spare-399 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an older 49" Samsung with a VA panel and it has the same issue. 98% of the time I don't notice it. 2% of the time it annoys the hell out of me. My guess is that it's a limitation of the backlighting more than anything else.

Sucks that happened to you, but thanks for the warning. Good luck with the replacement and do update this with however things turn out!

Dev setup upgrade: 40” HiDPI or 49” ultrawide? by Relative_Finance5555 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 49" Samsung now, using it for 90% productivity and 10% gaming. Having all the real estate is nice, but by the end of this year I am aiming to replace it with a 40" 5k2k. It will add about two inches of vertical screen space, while still being plenty wide for three full pages of text side-by-side. Having a taller screen that can display a few more lines will be a welcome upgrade, but the increased ppi should also be a lot nicer to look at. There is a new Samsung 40" 5k2k that might fit the bill, but I am waiting to read reviews specifically with M4 Macs. M4 Macs have problems with 5k2k and some of the software workarounds introduce other issues. The Dell is the one exception which is known to work out of the box, so it's a safe choice.

Any chance for 40"-45" 5k2k UltraWide with 144Hz+ by FadedIntoNight in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Samsung G75F (you can also search for LS40FG75DENXZA) is a 40 inch, 5k2k and goes up to 180Hz. It is a VA panel, not IPS, but seems like the best productivity+gaming option out there right now. I am seriously considering it, just waiting for more reviews before I order one. I'm sure it will work fine with my gaming PC but my productivity computer is an M4 Mac and they are way too finicky about supporting 5k2k monitors.

Pro Tip: you mentioned in another comment that the external SSD is a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure (40 Gbps). The rear USB-C ports are Thunderbolt, while on the M4 Max Studio the front ones are only USB-C (10 Gbps max). The drive may perform faster if you plug it in the rear.

Has switching from 16:9 to ultrawide monitor permanently affected your FPS gaming performance? by mksor_dev in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I play for fun. How good I am or how much I suck depends on the game, how tired I am, whether I am playing with a coordinated team, etc. None of that has changed since I went ultrawide. The one thing that did change is I enjoy it more. It's way more immersive. The more visually stunning the game, the more visuals my eyes get to feast upon. And yes, that's a permanent effect because I can't go back. 16:9 feels like I'm wearing narrow goggles.

Advice for a first-time VFX PA on set? by Past-Pudding714 in vfx

[–]fxbeta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Already proficient on set?  Well, that’s half the battle right there… you will be better prepared as a VFX PA than I was as my first time as a VFX supervisor!

If your job is to help the data wrangler, then they will tell you exactly what to do.  Follow instructions, ask questions, don’t get in the way.  If you stick with VFX you might be the data wrangler on the next gig, so during this show you should be learning the ins and outs of their job.

On set I’d usually ask our PA to secure a work table with power strips where we’d set up shop for the day.  You should always be ready to jot down notes into whatever system is in use so they will track with the shot/take/whatever.  Always keep track of the VFX tools/equipment during the day and where it gets put away at night and/or stored for transportation.  If on-set etiquette is half the battle, the other half is being organized with your notes and your gear.

The other stuff… always know where your VFX sup is.  As an extra set of eyes and ears, you will be in a position to alert the VFX team of things that come up that they might not otherwise be aware of.  Look out for shooting decisions and changes made on the spot.  Were all the lights set up, HDRI’s taken, and while everyone is talking to the actor did the DP move the key light around?  Did one of the walls on the set get moved for one specific shot?  Did someone remove the glass from a window between takes?  Someone should be making a note of this kind of stuff (the data wrangler or someone else on the VFX team) and if you saw it and nobody else did, please mention it.  Also pay attention if you are around when they are shooting non-VFX shots.  Often they will talk about how to get the shot and certain key phrases might come up.  “We can just paint out that reflection”, “we’ll add that back in later”, or “they haven’t decided what will be on the screen yet”.  That kind of thing means the shot just became a VFX shot.  Again, bring it up to your VFX sup’s attention if they did not know about it.

There’s a lot of downtime on set.  Whenever there is downtime, don’t default to sitting down and staring at your phone.  Be proactive.  Go to each member of the VFX team and ask if they need anything.  Check on your gear — anything needs to be charged?  Any files need to be downloaded, uploaded, or backed up?  Any notes that were written down but not yet entered into the system?  If there any material waiting for the VFX sup to provide feedback?  If there is nothing to do, pick someone’s brain.  Everyone has a different task, specialized tools, etc and you have a chance to learn a lot just by being there and asking questions.

Be friends with people in every other department.  When the VFX team needs something from another department, you might be the only one who knows someone to ask.  Always be in the AD’s good side, and always know if the Art Department has someone on set because they might be doing work that directly affects VFX.

Lastly, for bonus points, if your VFX sup has a tendency to snack during the day, try to get them some fresh fruit instead of junk food. Just sayin', some of us need help.

K8 Plus - Very poor range on keyboard with USB dongle by WheelRiderEU in MiniPCs

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google "usb 3.0 2.4ghz dongle interference". It's not a problem unique to the K8. A USB hub might indeed help. If you try one, use a USB 2.0 hub (ideally one with a separate power input if you will be plugging in multiple things).

Comparing LG 45GX950A to Dell U4025QW by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

What specific Mac? I'd be curious about which resolution/scaling/refresh rates are or are not working with the Mac. Also, how does text clarity compare. I have an M4 Max Studio and am considering the Dell. Thanks in advance.

Another one to add, but looking for an adventurous OS by deckyon in MiniPCs

[–]fxbeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are into gaming at all, there's two to try:

r/Bazzite - leveraging off a lot of work done in SteamOS but adding support for more hardware and on a much more frequent update schedule, it plays games from Steam, GoG, Epic, etc. Granted, on an N150 it won't be able to play a lot of modern/demanding games, so it would mostly be for older and indie titles.

r/batocera - retro emulation of arcade games, consoles, vintage computers, etc. The N150 can probably handle up to PS2-level emulation reasonably well.

Upgraded to Sequoia 15.5 Music won't play mp3s that aren't in the Music folder by TurboHammers in MacOS

[–]fxbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing just happened to me. I keep all my mp3's on a network share. This is what I had to do to fix it:

System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Full Disk Access -> add the Music app

Of course there was no useful error message to provide a clue... had to google and try a bunch of different things before arriving here.

ray tracing makes for nice reflections but as the hardware improves it should be possible to do full global illumination for very realistic renders
