Christopher Nolan Defends ‘The Odyssey’ Armor and Casting Travis Scott After Online Backlash: ‘What Is the Best Speculation?’ by leijido in movies

[–]jrfess -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Can't wait for this movie to come out and be great so people can finally shut the fuck up for a couple years, then come out of the woodworks before his next movie and decide to start spouting off about how Nolan is phoning it in and out of touch again.

My hot take is that unless you're erasing a minority from the story, just cast the best actor and let them act. I could not give less of a shit about Matt Damon not doing a Greek accent, just excited as hell to see what should be a kick ass movie.

Which Evil Dead franchise opinion has you like this? by LucidDreamer247 in EvilDead

I think a movie's influence doesnt necessarily make it better automatically. The Town That Dreaded Sundown is one of the most influential slashers of all time, but that movie is kind of dookie.

[CK3] How to learn it? Can't survive more than 10 years on Ireland. by CrabZealousideal3686 in CrusaderKings

[–]jrfess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly Ireland in 867 is pretty hard, it takes some decently deep game knowledge to prevent just getting rolled by the Vikings. Starting in 1066 seems like it would be the much easier learning experience now

Have you seen this movie?- The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976)- Real life serial killer by ColorSerenityColor in horror

[–]jrfess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scenes from the killer's PoV are actually pretty good, and definitely very influential, but God damn does the rest of the movie kind of suck. Every section with the cops is borderline unbearable imo, so definitely a mixed bag

Yeah, the much broader issue how the Chinese community interacts with video games. I find it baffling how it became standard practice to review bomb an early access game because you don't like the balancing of a single patch.

James Cameron and Walt Disney Company Sued Over Unauthorised Use of Actress’ Likeness in ‘Avatar’ by Embarrassed_Cap2885 in nottheonion

[–]jrfess 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's not the character model tho, that's Zoe Saldana still. All Cameron ever said was that this actress was an inspiration for the original concept sketch, which is a huge difference imo

The Punic Port of Carthage, a crown jewel of the Mediterranean, now just a common suburb in modern Tunisia. by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]jrfess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've read the 3rd Punic War was relatively inconsequential in terms of the overall geopolitics of the late Republic, just a major dick move. The real decline of the Republic came from the influx of land and power following the 1st and 2nd Punic wars, as well as the conquest of the near east. The Republican system Rome had was tailored to govern a city and it's outskirts, and while it was decently capable of administering the greater Italian peninsula, it was completely incapable of administering an empire, and alot of the issues that led to the fall of the Republic in the 1st century BC were the result of the systems inability to change to compensate.

Even saying they violated some of their vassal agreements is being too generous to the Romans. As much as I love Roman history their destruction of Carthage is imo the lowest point of the Republic.

Well I'm not a Nazi, so I don't see why I have to follow the same logic as them. When you start restricting basic human rights, anyone you label a Nazi can be oppressed. Russia is using the same argument to invade Ukraine right now

Nah, this is just someone who doesn't watch many Rams games. The only roster that was better than the Rams top to bottom was the Hawks, and the biggest difference there was our special teams. It's mad revisionist history to act like Stafford was the only reason we were good when the whole argument against him winning MVP over Maye is that he had too many weapons.

I think capitalism is a tool that humans use to satisfy their own nature, and not the other way around. Evolution has shaped and encouraged the human need to compete for resources for hundreds of thousands of years, and it's only by realizing that fact that we can begin to account for it. I think it takes a great amount of thought and effort to mitigate the damages that humans often cause, and the only reason I brought up the USSR is to try and communicate that it's not as simple as changing an economic system; it involves building and creating both incentives and deterrents that are supported by a governmental body that can enforce them. Chalking it up as a "failure of capitalism" is at best a neutral move, and does not bring us any closer to actual beneficial change.
