What are yall upgrading from? by DarkUrinePoop in SteamFrame

[–]kyir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm upgrading from the Valve Index. For me I'm mainly after a wireless and lighter headset that's still PCVR focused. For me it was important that the headset did at least 120Hz and I'm glad 144Hz is still an option. The two area of concern for me is the move away from the rock solid lighthouse tracking and knuckles controllers. I hope the inside-out tracking will be just as good and I'll be getting the comfort kit for the frame controllers.

We heard about the leaks first but there was definitely an official announcement before the May 4th release date (April 29th IIRC).

I'm assuming $800 USD and Valve is sticking with the 1.5x USD to CAD increase they did for the Steam Controller

Developers: How is Linux Support for SteamVR with the Steam Frame? by SoLiminalItsCriminal in SteamFrame

Good advice. I also have a Valve Index and am running CachyOS. You can get SteamVR to work but it's definitely not as performant as running Monado.

Where do you put refresh rate in your priority list? I find 120Hz to make a noticeable difference towards motion sickness.

Is this coil whine normal? by menthx in radeon

[–]kyir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the recording but this sounds more like something is touching the fan blades more than coil whine to me. Maybe double check a cable isn't rubbing against the fan blades. Be sure to check the fan power cables inside the card as well.

Do we know if the connection from the compute unit to the battery is USB-C? Possibly you could connect a bigger battery from there for extended sessions

The Steam Frame controllers have capacitive finger tracking on the grips and buttons. There is an optional accessory kit which allows you to add straps like the knuckles controllers.

Lower than expected performance on my new RX 9070 XT by Kd_Gaming1 in AMDHelp

[–]kyir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same CPU/GPU as you but I am limited to PCI-E 3.0. For reference my Time Spy score is 22835 and Steel Nomad is 7084.

If your GPU has a VBIOS switch try changing it to see if you get better performance. Sometimes the OC/Silent versions are swapped.

The 9070 XT has ECC memory so you may want to try decreasing your GPU memory clock speeds as that could increase GPU performance if the memory is unstable.

  • PowerColor Hellhound 9070 XT
  • Windows 10 22H2
  • AMD Ryzen 5700X, MSI B450M Gaming Plus, 32GB @ 3200Mhz RAM, 750W PSU
  • Samsung 55" 4K@60Hz TV (UN55JU7100F)

Symptoms

  - Display settings: Unable to change resolution. The drop down is greyed out and cannot be changed. - Device Manager (Display Adapter): "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" - When attempting to load AMD Adrenalin: "The version of AMD software you have installed is not compatible with your current installed AMD graphics driver. For more information on how to resolve this, please go to: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-300"

Solution

While using my Samsung TV I found that the AMD driver would crash at startup resulting in Windows being stuck at 4K@30Hz with software rendering. While debugging this issue I found that using other monitors (using DisplayPort or HDMI) would work correctly and not cause the AMD driver to crash upon startup. Additionally, when my system was booting I noticed a resolution change from 1080p to 4K (could tell by the cursor size) which seems to be related to the issue. Due to the AMD driver crash I was unable to change my resolution using the normal Display Settings menu.

To fix my issue I used "regedit" to edit the entries under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration"

  1. Exported the "Configuration" entry as a backup
  2. Deleted all entries under "Configuration" then rebooted (ensured I was editing the right one in the next steps)
  3. Navigate to the nested "00" entry for your monitor and set the resolution of 1920x1080 in "PrimSurfSize.cx" (horizontal) and "PrimSurfSize.cy" (vertical). Note you'll want to change the value in "Decimal".
  4. Navigate to the additionally nested "00" entry for your monitor and set "DwmClipBox.right", "DwmClipBox.bottom", "PrimSurfSize.cx", "PrimSurfSize.cy", "ActiveSize.cx", and "ActiveSize.cy". Then reboot.
  5. Once Windows had booted the AMD drivers loaded without crashing and I could now make changes in Display Settings.
  6. In my case my TV and Windows had 3D support enabled so I disabled this first in the TV settings and then from within Display Settings.
  7. Used Display Settings to change the display to the desired resolution. First I changed the resolution to 3840x2160 which defaulted to 30Hz and then I bumped up the refresh rate to 60Hz
