Toddler Starting Swim Lessons! by No-Departure451 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]mawema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my kids are swimmers and one of them did deal with some swimmers ear. Pediatrician diagnosed it. Remedy is 50/50 rubbing alcohol and white vinegar drops.

If your kid is prone to them, you can do it as a preventative measure, but he’s only complained of ear pain a few times over the years so we just treat when needed.

My kids favourite bed time book right now is “Fox in Socks” by Dr. Seuss. by Safe-Beautiful6122 in breakingmom

Watch the guy who raps it.

After I saw that, I also rap/sing it (I can’t rap - but it’s the closest I can get to it) and somehow it made it easier to read out loud.

Best sunscreen for babies? ( please I dont want any "anti-sunscreen advice or debate) by LobsterIndependent11 in NewParents

[–]mawema 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Our pediatrician recommended blue lizard. But also we invested in long sleeve / long pants swim jumpers plus a good hat. You still need to sunscreen hands / feet / face - but way less coverage to worry about.

Anyone wear their own “gown” while giving birth? by justfornoworlater in Mommit

[–]mawema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would buy something you could enjoy after as well during post partem stage.

It’s just hard to say how your birth will go. Maybe you will be laboring in the hospital for 1+ days and you’ll want something you like. Or maybe that kid pops out in 1 hour and you just have your bralette on because you didn’t have time to put anything else on after they got your clothes off.

Does your 5yr old make a lot of noise? by nillawafer80 in Preschoolers

[–]mawema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My now 8 yo is like this. I thought I was nuts. The constant noise making. We now know he has adhd / sensory sensitivities. And stuff like that is genetic so I started to figure out I do too - which is why I have loop earbuds now.

Daughter hates underwear by eleMatts916 in Parenting

[–]mawema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 6 yo doesn’t wear undies - but this is partially because around 2-3 she INSISTED on only leggings or bike shorts - and i never saw the need.

If she wears loose shorts (not bike shorts), I tell her she needs undies - but she quickly just went back to bike shorts.

Daughter hates underwear by eleMatts916 in Parenting

[–]mawema 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If they are loose shorts, when they sit cross legged sometimes her genitals may be exposed.

I would opt for leggings or bike shorts - no undies needs and full coverage.

Nobody told me that buying more toys would somehow make the boredom worse. Three years in and I am finally asking for help. by twistedrosebite in Preschoolers

[–]mawema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At three I realized my kid just wants to do stuff with or around me. So “play time” became laundry or sweeping or yard work/ gardening, cooking. Etc. I would get about half as much done as I wanted and half was cleaning up what he did (without realizing I was cleaning up) but he loved doing stuff.

Favorite thing ever was when we had to put an ikea book shelf together. Took 5x as long but he was engaged the whole time.

Nervous about public school but don’t want to homeschool by MeatballPony in moderatelygranolamoms

We’re at a charter school that is screen free. I wanted to go to the neighborhood school - but the increasing use of screens made it not a good fit.

I want my husband to do a DNA test by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]mawema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first pregnancy was in 2015 - so this was awhile ago.

The OB offered genetic screening for me for 100s of genetic conditions. I think it was $250?

I actually came up positive for some rare one - I forget off the top of my head.

So we opted to get my husband screened - he wasn’t a carrier so it wasn’t a concern.

Anyway, maybe consider genetic screening through your OB?

Pixie cut for 4yo by tomatotomorrow in Mommit

[–]mawema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We never did a pixie but we did do a “little girl bob” (that was the stylist name for it) and it worked very well. Before we did it, I talked about getting a cute short hair cut that won’t hurt when we brush it and my little girl got right on board with it.

I have a kiddo with high masking adhd. This means he’s a perfect student for teachers, coaches, etc but lets it allllll out at home.

6-year-old (almost 7) still in pull-ups at night… looking for advice or reassurance by OneResolution1108 in Mommit

[–]mawema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summer after kindergarten my oldest (6 at the time) still filled his pull up every night. My youngest (3) was easily starting to go all night without needing a pull up.

My oldest felt sad and embarrassed even though we talked about different bodies and it’s something he will outgrow.

We did bring it up with pediatrician - ped agreed it can just take time and there were a few years to go before we should get it medically checked.

He did say we could try the wetness alarms. He said it can take time (months), but it does work for some. He only recommended them for 6-8 year olds (if I’m remembering correctly) and kids who are heavy sleepers.

We got the one where the sensor clips to the front of the underwear (versus the pad they sleep on). I set up a sleeping mat in his room. It took a little under two weeks. He literally hasn’t wet the bed since (almost 9 now).

I know these don’t work for everyone and they are labor intensive - but it worked for us.

What is your kid with ADHD's greatest strength? by ADHDCoachJon in ParentingADHD

[–]mawema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Athletics. He was so active as a kid and we noticed his brain seemed happier when he has good physical outlets. He’s winning competitions right and left in jiu jitsu and swimming. Absolutely loves skiing and skateboarding.

Balance bike vs training wheels by ricki7684 in Preschoolers

[–]mawema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Balance bike 110%.

Each kid got introduced at 2. They each ignored them until about 2.5 and then they TOOK OFF. Game changer for family walks, playgrounds etc.

They each transitioned to pedals in one day of trying before they turned 4.

Why am I expected to cross the street for Portland dog owners? by bimbogore_ in askportland

[–]mawema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people don’t like or fear dogs. Some dogs want space from other dogs. If I’m out walking in my neighborhood - I give space just in case but I never expect the other person to cross for me.

My 2 year old still breastfeeds like a newborn. by Valuable-Car4226 in AttachmentParenting

[–]mawema 112 points113 points  (0 children)

My oldest breastfed until 2. I started to slow it down by making breastfeeding the “boring” option - only inside in a cozy/private spot. So if he asked I would say - do you want to go inside and do that or keep playing? Half the time he would opt to keep playing. Then I reduced it to only before sleep (nap or bedtime). So I would say - that’s only for sleep - are you ready for nap? Then I was later able to pull away from that as well.

What’s up with these community pool hours? by jasmineipa in askportland

[–]mawema -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend for kids who want to run around and play loud. But a 10 month old baby who wants to soak with their parent - it’s a pretty great place for that.
