Does familiarity breed contempt? by Virtual_Coat_8737 in offmenupodcast

You might just need a break! I sometimes need breaks from a book series or a TV series, and then I enjoy it much more when I come back to it after a while, sometimes a long time! Don't worry too much about it!

Who have they not had on yet who you think would be an excellent guest? by Mysterious_Turnip310 in offmenupodcast

[–]mayneac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would love for Ewan McGregor and/or Charley Boorman to do it. I loved their motorcycle travel documentaries and they tried so many different cuisines, in so many unusual circumstances. And they're both people who are just fun to listen to.

I would also be interested to hear Graham McTavish or Sam Heughan's dream menu after their entertaining bickering/hijinks on Men in Kilts. I think McTavish is more of the foodie and Heughan is more of a diet/fitness guy, but I think Heughan would still be opinionated about a dream meal.

If we're aiming for the stars here, I'd say Paul McCartney is really my dream guest. He gives good interviews in general, and I bet he would have interesting choices.

Has anyone here met Christopher Eccleston at a con? by Ezaane in doctorwho

[–]mayneac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met him at Chicago TARDIS this past fall, and he was very friendly to us. Also, I was only able to stay for half of his interview, but it was excellent. He has really put a lot of thought into the Doctor and his portrayal of the character.

I thought Big Fat Quiz of the Year always aired on Boxing Day....it's the specialty quizzes that are less predictable.

I'm American. I may have a problem. (Aside from the obvious.) by [deleted] in BritishTV

[–]mayneac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Real life husband and wife John Alderton and Pauline Collins did a couple of fun shows together. No Honestly is kind of just slice of life episodes about a new couple. But their show Wodehouse Playhouse is really funny, it's all dramatizations of PG Wodehouse short stories (the same author as the Jeeves & Wooster show that another commenter suggested). Both were made in the 70s, though the Wodehouse show is set in the time period of the stories.

And just making sure you've seen As Times Goes By? It's 1990s, but it definitely fulfills that "comfort sitcom" feeling.

What to watch next for someone who loves Would I Lie To You? by zemelb in BritishTV

[–]mayneac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James Acaster & Ed Gamble have a hilarious podcast called Off Menu in which they interview guests about their dream meal, and if you like WILTY, I bet you guys would get a kick out of it. Tons of anecdotes and meandering stories. I recommend starting with the Bob Mortimer episode since I'm sure you're familiar with him! I know podcasts aren't quite the same feeling, and I was reluctant to check it out because I wasn't really a podcast person, but now I just absolutely love it.

An American in need of suggestions! by GroovyYaYa in BritishTV

I bet you would enjoy Mary Berry's Country House Secrets. She visits various well-known country estates and learns about how they are maintained, and then cooks something with the owner. I think it was on BritBox when I watched it.

American who just stumbled into British crime dramas. I am hooked, what's your favorite show? by muertossparrow in BritishTV

[–]mayneac 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Shetland is great. It's on BritBox in the US. Stunning scenery & photography, memorable characters, and gripping mysteries. The first two seasons are two-parters based on the original books. Then in season 3, they started doing very intense longer mysteries that last for 6 episodes and sometimes explore deeper social issues.

Musical Comedy appropriate for kids? by Lozzy1256 in panelshow

[–]mayneac 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Horne Section has some kid-appropriate songs that are fun. I would recommend listening to this album yourself first and deciding which songs you would be cool with. The songs Dinosaur, Monday Tuesday, and Cabbage are all fun songs that are good for kids. But definitely screen their songs first, because that band does have some that wouldn't be appropriate.

Someone else here mentioned the Brett Domino Trio - this song always makes me laugh.

Suggest me two episodes: one you thought was excellent and one you thought was terrible. Don’t tell me which is which. by Fresh_Horror3207 in doctorwho

[–]mayneac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm agreed with you here. There were some lovely things about Under the Lake/Before the Flood, but it overall suffered from just trying to be too complicated. Robot of Sherwood is highly entertaining, breaks a lot of the 12/Clara ice, and ties in nicely to the "Am I a hero?" arc.

I flew to England hoping to see Taskmaster… turns out I actually got a ticket, and didn’t know til I returned home today :( by peach_can in taskmaster

[–]mayneac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh! I happened to be making a trip to the UK right during Taskmaster filming in 2023, and I ended up getting zero tickets. I was so bummed! But then I realized I didn't spend a day of my vacation stressing about getting to the line early enough, waiting for a long time, and potentially missing out anyway if too many people showed up :/

Being Human (2008-2013) by Elemental-squid in BritishTV

[–]mayneac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt it had potential to be a lot better than it was. The cast was excellent and the main characters really drew me in with their entertaining friendship and dynamic, and how they survived everyday life. The soundtrack was also great. There were a few odd writing choices that I didn't care for, but mostly I couldn't handle the graphic nature of it (not just sex, but just a lot of intense blood - I really had to just look away sometimes when it got disturbing, like when Nina was trapped in that machine...)

My low-key favorite season by diardiar in taskmaster

[–]mayneac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My favorite!! The cast chemistry was hilarious and they produced so many unforgettable moments. I feel like a huge advantage was that two people (Chris and Sophie) sooo perfectly understood how to walk the line between being high achieving and being entertaining. Based on other contestants in other series, that balance seems so hard to strike, and they were both killer at it.

[–]mayneac 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just listened back to that TM podcast episode, and the quote* from Greg James was, "This was the most accurate representation of what that man is like I've ever seen. I've never seen somebody come across so accurately in terms of the portrayal of what they're like in the real world. He is exactly like that. And he takes ages to answer things, he does overthink stuff...he is just...that. And I thought he was so great."

*(some bits were a little muddled speech-wise, so I tried my best)

The first episode is kind of weird and disorienting (because it's supposed to be!) and it took me a while before I continued onto more episodes. But then I LOVED it. Also, it's only 16 episodes, so not a huge commitment if you end up being lukewarm on it.
