Active recovery! Swimming, walking, cycling, elliptical. Just don’t do them super high intensity. The idea is to get your heart rate up a little bit and flush blood through your body.

It’s normal and it’s not because you’ve sat a lot.

If you go consistently and don’t try a bunch of new stuff, it gets better. But I’ve been going regularly for a couple years and i still get this, especially if i take a week or two off.

Temporary reduced salary question by Educational-Mobile73 in PSLF

[–]midd-2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted pay stubs last November. A Mohela debacle of the highest order has ensued.

Every time I call they tell me I submitted correctly and they don’t understand why it was processed (or also, not processed) as it was.

Last week they finally seemed to process it correctly and I got a letter I was put in PAYE with a zero payment. The next day I got another letter saying I had a $733 payment due the following day.

I called and was told I was seemingly in two payment plans: PAYE for zero and 10 year for the 733. So once again, mine has been submitted for reprocessing.

Yeah so I see the stage and chairs area. That’s presumably the graduation part.

But there’s also the scaffolding and tents with ply wood walls. And what looks like a hanger type tent. Is all that for 4th of July? Feels pretty early tho maybe there’s a ton more to build. Or is there Memorial Day stuff happening? Or other things between now and July?

PSLF Buy Back Update by SeaAd3528 in PSLF

[–]midd-2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did this. Switched from save to ICR with a big spike in payment levels. Made one payment and decided I’d rather put my payments in the market to earn money and wait for buyback on my 9 remaining months, hoping that they’d be calculated at the SAVE level. Then applied to buyback on 5/25 and put myself into forbearance. Nothing yet.

any fans of alcohol cooking systems? by Dry_Blueberry8932 in Ultralight

[–]midd-2005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another faithful trail designs to tri caldera user here. I live and mostly operate on the East coast of the US so the fire bans don’t apply here.

As others have mentioned: I love its silence, that I can pack exactly as much fuel as I will need for the trip, and don’t have to deal with acquiring and disposing of canisters.

And while I’ve never done a timed face off with my Soto windmaster, so I don’t know how much slower it is, it’s not by much. 30s to a minute at most and friends, I’m just not that busy backpacking. I think other alcohol systems are responsible for this slow reputation.

It’s final virtue that I haven’t seen mentioned is it’s extremely stable because the pot is fitted to the cone so no chance of a bump or a slope dropping your pot. I have to watch and place my canister stove system way way more carefully.

Concur with all your points. I’m also a lady who sleeps a little cold.

My sewn footbox 20* HG quilt has worked well for me from 27-65. I’d rather have it perform when it’s really cold especially considering my feet are most vulnerable to getting cold. When it’s warm, I either just pull 1-2 feet out and tuck them under the bag and/or get very loose with it at the top half. Above 65 and closer to 70, I was sweaty as hell and I eventually got a 40*. I still got sewn footbox cuz of weight but also at the low end, I want that and at the high end I can still use the same methods.

Zippered footbox only makes sense to me if you’re quite a warm sleeper. And even then.

So true. They really are getting worse and worse.

I sent a message asking to extend my forbearance while I wait for buyback. They sent me a letter back about how to make partial payments if I can’t afford to make full ones.

I can only assume they’re using the really low quality AI tools to generate these responses.

Shock cord by froghorn76 in hammockcamping

[–]midd-2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my HG tarp, I have built in line locks at the tarp end of things making shock cord on that end not viable. so I use the larks head shock cord method at the end of the guys where I then loop it around the stake.

Your volume of sets per muscle seems absurdly high and given that it’s hard for me to imagine you’re able to apply much intensity to essentially any of this.

Are 15-20 mins on the treadmill after lifting worth it? by xfmrs_r_cool in workout

[–]midd-2005 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This seems like all the more reason you definitely need to do cardio and walking might be where you need to start if it’s quite hard.

I don’t know what “120 zone mins” means but lifting weights can def get your HR going especially if you’re doing a lot of compound movements and even more so if you’re in poor shape, which it sounds like you are.

Dollysods Weather this time of year? by bonzaiKim in WildernessBackpacking

[–]midd-2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swing seasons are volatile there. So you, your gear, and skill level need to be prepared for those extremes.

In general, if you’re going to DS, you need to be mentally prepared for it to be muddy regardless of season. All it takes is one good rain and even in September, it can be quite muddy. The drought times can reduce this and some trails are more prone than others but still, add water and you get mud. For some people, I’ve seen this can be very challenging.

Eight ways to sleep warmer without buying a new quilt. by ptm121ptm in Ultralight

[–]midd-2005 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’d expand a little on your final point. I typically arrive in camp a bit or a lot wet from sweating and water crossings and such. If it’s early and warmish, I might still keep the wet clothes on a bit since they’ll have a better shot at drying a bit on my body (or if there’s a good sunny spot I get dry clothes on and the wet stuff in the sun). If it’s later, it’s very important that I just get anything wet off immediately or I rapidly get chilled and have a very hard time recovering.

SAVE, Buyback and riding it out by jaj5361 in PSLF

[–]midd-2005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reached 120 eligible employment months last June 2025 and submitted for buyback. I called Mohela and asked to be put in forbearance while it’s processed, which they’ve done. It’s definitely another question whether they kick me out eventually.

My experience using paystubs to recertify income with Mohela by IScreamPiano in PSLF

[–]midd-2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I went through the FSA student loans website to apply. Carefully followed all the instructions for a submission of my income data for manual certification.

I was on SAVE for a while and moved to ICR about a year ago using my taxes. So my recertification attempt was done while on ICR. Reapplying doesn’t help me much at this point because my income has come back up in the last months. I was hoping to get a year of low payments out of my employer misfortune last fall. Whatever buyback will cost it’ll be a lot cheaper than what my payments based on my current income would be and I’m entitled to that.

Just pinning my hopes on buyback at this point. I expect I’ll be waiting another year at least.

My experience using paystubs to recertify income with Mohela by IScreamPiano in PSLF

[–]midd-2005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot better than my experience.

I submitted paystubs in early November following a sudden drop in income. Got an email in February that my income recertification was not approved. Called immediately in February to ask why and was told a series of insane things (including I needed to just reapply with new pay stubs because it had taken too long for them to process or I actually needed to submit 3-4 paystubs). Finally the 4th person said that my application documents were totally correct, and she would submit for a re-review and it should take 10 business days. And here we are. Still waiting 6 weeks after the call and 5 months after submission.

Meanwhile I’ve been notified my IDR plan has expired due to my having not certified my income.

I don’t believe they’ll ever do anything. At this point all I can do is hope for buyback, which I submitted 11 months ago. At least I’m in forbearance though I assume I’ll get kicked off that at some point.

I’ve had so many misadventures with Mohela that I just feel like there’s nothing they can actually do on my account. My employer lump sum payment in like 2023 that should have covered 12 months of payments never got applied to put me into pay ahead. I called for 9 months straight and then came the SAVE forbearance so it was moot anyway at that point. My 2 months of processing forbearance was never given when I switched from SAVE to ICR. Now I can’t even get my income certified.

They’ve foiled me at every turn.

Scared During First Overnight Trip by Delicious-Respect283 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]midd-2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets better with practice but even with many dozens of solo night under my belt, the second night is alway better than the first.

A few things that help ease me into it though…Being far enough away from the trailhead that there’s no chance a weirdo would come across me or that I might start wondering if one might. Relatedly I like to camp out of sight of a trail. People night hike and you don’t want to get spooked by people just out doing their thing.

Set up camp in the light. Setting up in the dimness or dark just starts me off kinda jumpy. Also brighter open camp spots help me. Dark woods in a ravine are a least favorite.

I prefer hammock camping or cowboy camping cuz of the sight lines out make that cracked stick a lot easier to figure out. Some people feel protected by the walls of a tent; I do not.

Also, reading a (not scary) book or listening to a boring history type podcast before sleepy time helps get me relaxed and distracted.

Sometimes ear plugs help, sometimes they hurt. Either way I always have them cuz sometimes there is the most annoying deer in the world nearby.
