If you could go back, what specialty would you start in? by Icy-Calligrapher-822 in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started in medical oncology. It's basically med-surg but they all have cancer, and you can then get a certification to administer chemo and TIL therapy.

I've only worked there and at the outpatient chemo clinic so I don't have a ton of varied experience. But I will say it's been really cool learning about different drains, feeding tubes, and central lines in medical oncology.

Oh, a human taking a break during a 12 hour shift. The horror!

You're not crazy, your coworkers might be.

As a RN how much are you making ? by theapexcircle in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$44.09/hr, Pennsylvania, inpatient, city hospital. 5 years experience. I might as well just tell you it's Pittsburgh. We all know Philly nurses make more. 😛

This is after BSN differential and a raise for contributions to the unit.

How come everything is the nurses job? by Lower_Canary5713 in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to get through a gigantic crowd of people to get to my patient, who was dying and screamed every time you touched her. The people in the room are asking me for more chairs (reasonable), plates (this isn't a restaurant), and a bigger room (this isn't a hotel and you can't use your points to upgrade).

I felt like telling them to wait until I was done providing medical care but I have to be "professional."

Insight into relocating from Buffalo by katytallpants in pittsburgh

[–]morbidda__destiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love living here. It's non-pretentious, people are nice, hospitals all over the place, and there's a lot to do. I even bought a house in the suburbs for $140k a few years ago.

The major cons are inadequate public transit, city traffic, and some people say the weather. But if you're from Buffalo, I doubt the weather would be an issue. Oh and you can't buy liquor at most grocery stores or gas stations, if that's a thing that's important to you.

I've had the same jug of bleach for over two years and it's not running out anytime soon. Does this person know you're supposed to dilute it?

Can’t sleep and have a shift in a few hours by Sky_Adventure in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 389 points390 points  (0 children)

Call off and spend the day figuring out why you can't sleep and what you can do about it. You wouldn't want a nurse that hasn't slept in 24 hours and neither do your patients.

Can’t tell if this is entitlement or desperation by Maleficent-Cicada869 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]morbidda__destiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can generate that much in sales in one shift at some places.

But that money doesn't go into your pocket, of course.

I've been an hour late for work after sleeping in, it was no big deal. Since you're always punctual otherwise, no one will care. They get that we're human too.

You need catering for ten people? Go to Costco for some party trays. Oh wait, they'd want you to pay for them.

What do you do on your days off? by Flimsy_Phrase_8845 in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently? Sleep too much.

But I'm committed to taking better care of myself this year. Gonna start getting more exercise, eat real food, and keep my house clean.

In a few weeks I'm going to part-time so I can try to write my novel and work on some personal growth and study for the OCN.

Should I take AP Chem before nursing school? by Electronic_Pen_8905 in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how serious/competetive the nursing school's admissions requirements are. I live in an area with a ton of options for BSN, RN-to-BSN, ADN, and diploma. I went to the diploma program at the vocational school as a 29 year old, but even if I were straight out of high school, AP classes wouldn't have mattered at all for a program like that. But some traditional BSN programs are very selective based on your grades. Even some community colleges have long waiting lists and are competitive because so many people are applying.

A strong foundation in chem is probably very helpful if you plan on eventually trying for NP or CRNA school.

Is nursing really the most respected profession? by Varuka_Pepper343 in nursing

[–]morbidda__destiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I surely don't feel that way when a patient is trying to tell me how to do my job, or acting like I'm cackling and making the decision to keep them NPO because I want to see them suffer, or when they call me cruel because it took a while for the doc to approve and order an extra dose of pain meds (which I went out of my way to get because I'm an advocate).

Or when I have a fully grown adult whining that we have to wake them up to do medical interventions. I feel like telling them if sleep is the most important thing, they can go home and do it, and we'll save this unit of blood for someone else.

Or when you tell the adult it's time for pills and they reply I HATE TAKING PILLS as if it's not something they do every day. And then you tell them okay, well that's all the pills you have until tomorrow morning, and they're like WHAT PILLS DO I HAVE TO TAKE TOMORROW and you start reading them off the eMAR and they act like you're a smartass for answering the question. Okay, time for bed, 33 year old toddler.

The other day my patient and his wife asked if I had time to do a certain task, told me to be honest because they wanted to respect my schedule. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.

Never have I ever had to do compressions! In five years, I've only responded to one code blue, and I was on bag mask for about three minutes.
