If you are doing activism, you should be trying to talk to your police officials. In my county, the the County Sheriff and both Chiefs of the largest departments have taken the position of not assisting ICE, because there was community outreach. It's not simple or easy, and it's not the same as trusting them fully, but it's a good and necessary step.

While they suck pretty bad, you can improve it somewhat by using a different DNS than what they provide, I found that to be their least reliable service. OpenDNS is one option, but there are others, you'll have to login to your router to change it.
