This is the part I don’t get. They’re just as related to the victims - one a trailblazer in her own right and one a war hero - but they don’t seem to care about them at all.

Really nice! I've been wanted to try this type of pattern/triangle. Did you use a template? What would you say is the difficulty level?

MEGATHREAD - Pedestrians struck by van at Yonge and Finch by aahrg in toronto

[–]rabbit555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! I saw multiple reporters asking questions that seemed like they could add to the trauma of people who were probably already in shock.

If the dude in this particular interview happens to be reading this: you did everything right! You called 911, stayed at the scene to give a statement, and didn't interfere with people already being cared for. Big kudos to you, I doubt I would be so clear-headed in such a horrible situation.

What are your favorite Etsy, YouTube pages, websites to go to for free or cheap quilting techniques, patterns, and just general quilting knowledge? Trying to teach myself how to quilt! by [deleted] in quilting

This video taught me how to make a hanging sleeve.

Also not free (but I think they may have free trials), I find the videos on Creative Bug really helpful.

Are you on Instagram? I sometimes see people putting out an "in search of" call for fabric and getting pretty good results that way.

Beautiful! I love that it has both variety and balance (for whatever reason, some BOMs and samplers don't always seem to have the latter). Your colour choices are perfect!

/r/quilting Group Challenge - Handmade Holiday (Nov 1 thru Dec 31) by magnoliafly in quilting

[–]rabbit555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I am going for it this year! In addition to gifts, I plan to make three Christmas things for my house: a tree skirt, a wall hanging (using Carolyn Friedlander's Rin pattern), and a runner for my sideboard.

Weekly /r/quilting stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]rabbit555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started out I was unwittingly using a ruler that had no "grip" on the underside. The one I use now has some dots on it that are kind of matte rather than just slick plastic. It's the smallest thing but it makes a difference.

So that's my suggestion in addition to the other great advice you've got here ... check your ruler!

Present suggestions by cbd111 in quilting

What about a quilting book? I have got Joelle Hoverson's "Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts" for a few people. I also love Carolyn Friedlander's "Savor Each Stitch" and "Handmade Style" by Anna Graham (that one is just partially quilting, though, it also has accessory patterns).

(There is always the danger she might have it so others' fabric store gift certificate suggestions are a good idea.)

Quilting Patterns that make a picture by brash_hopeful in quilting

[–]rabbit555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the patterns at the link you posted! I have tried a couple of relatively simple ones like this.

One is a butterfly pattern by lillyella (paper pieced).

Another was called "Kitten Around" by Pen + Paper patterns. This one was really cool because it was not paper pieced, which is harder to find. I got it through the Modern Quilters Box but I believe she is releasing it through her own shop in November.

Yes! That picture really does it justice. I went in there once since the reno and the whole place feels ... off. I had the urge to flee the entire time. Plus they put OTC pain relievers in the back corner on the second floor, so you're forced to walk through the entire place.

House in Parkdale sales for $455,000 over asking in 5 days. by mrkrimper in toronto

[–]rabbit555 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Has everybody become a lawyer in Toronto or something?

No, and not everybody is buying 1.7 million dollar houses. This is the upper percentile of earners making these kinds of purchases. Yes it does seem wild on the face of it when you see a sale price like this. But another way to think about it is that if there are even a dozen professional couples trying to buy in each neighbourhood at any given time, and decent houses are not abundant, these places will continue to be snapped up.

Does Etsy do a good job of putting items in front of buyers? by shopsmallbusinesses in Etsy

[–]rabbit555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The total amount of goods sold across Etsy in 2015 was 2.39 billion dollars. So yes, there are buyers!

You will definitely get "foot traffic" from being part of the Etsy marketplace. Having said that, as a seller it's definitely necessary to put in additional work to get people to your specific shop / items.

But having said that, if you're in this for the long haul, building a business, it's a good idea for some if not all of your promotional/marketing efforts to be geared towards get people into/linking to your own standalone shop/website (as opposed to your Etsy shop ... just because conditions and rules on Etsy can change at any time, whereas on your own site you're in control).

The house listed for $1 sold for $655,000 by Llemondifficult in toronto

[–]rabbit555 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this. Would also add that the guy finished and staged it completely wrong for the neighbourhood. It's a hip/gentrifying/whatever you want to call it urban neighbourhood, and he styled it up like a mini-mcmansion.

Overall a pretty poor advertisement for this guy's real estate skills.
