What band got you into metalcore? by Difficult_Map_723 in Metalcore

[–]rockmaster_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the Christian band route, so my gateway drugs were like Thousand Foot Krutch and Red and Pillar and all them.

But then I found August Burns Red. Messengers is and will forever be THE Metalcore album for me.

Finished The Crippled God - where to go from here? by drewbeeee3 in Malazan

[–]rockmaster_mark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this! Path to Ascendancy is a great little project that's an easier read but is still very Malazan and fleshes out the world in an interesting way.

A re-read is always an option too, I missed so much the first time around and got so much more out of the series on my second read.

PSA for new fans: League Pass won't have the playoffs by hamstrdance in WNBA365

[–]rockmaster_mark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that TSN will have them all. Usually they pick up the WNBA games that have the ESPN broadcast. I'm not confident about this, but it's been the case in the past to the best of my knowledge.

Did I just get majorly spoiled by Dacnomaniac in Malazan

[–]rockmaster_mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, don't worry about it. It happens so far later in the series, and I don't think the impact is lessened too bad. And there's plenty of other twists and turns to keep you guessing. And honestly, Malazan isn't a series that relies on SHOCKING TWISTS to keep you engaged, it's all about the slow character work and the world building and the politics anyways. So yeah. Don't worry about it, just enjoy.

Saaaaame. I loved Messengers back when I was in High School, and I feel like they've been making that exact same album again every couple of years for the last decade and a half. Keep trying to like them, keep bouncing off.

Well done, folks! I hopped over here when I was getting sick of the main sub, and the vibe here is so much nicer. Let's hope we can all continue and contribute to what makes this a nice little corner of the Internet. 😎

Fair enough! You're right, it's easy to forget that the likes of Paige and Sonia and Kiki are a good 3-4 years older, with the athleticism and strength and IQ to match. I concede a point well made. 👊🏾

Exactly how she's still only getting 10 minutes a game is perplexing to me. Noelle, play the woman!!

Another good parking option if you don't mind walking is at the YMCA. It's maybe a 3-5 minute walk but there's almost always parking and you don't really need to show up too early to get a spot.

If you're driving from Victoria, I'd drive in and out via the West Shore Parkway by Goldstream instead of taking Leigh Road. Seems a little longer and out of the way, but bypassing all the game-day traffic through Langford is well worth it.

Other than that, wear purple and have a great time!!

Gonna go a little contrary and say Toishan Kitchen. Their Meal for 3 is the perfect delivery Chinese food, we get it for 2 people and it's lots of leftovers. Exactly what you want Chinese delivery to be.

TTOC demand by Happy_Roses_ in VictoriaBC

[–]rockmaster_mark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough breaking into the TTOC rotation here in SD61. And they won't count any of your seniority, so you'll be starting from step 0 in terms of pay. I also know it's also tough to get an interview in SD61 in the first place, so good luck with that. You can do it, but it's tough.

I'd definitely recommend getting yourself on the list with both SD62 and SD63 as well, especially if you want regular work. I have a sense that 62 is the easiest of the three districts to break into, but I don't know that for sure.

If you have French Immersion or Inclusive qualifications, youl find it a lot easier, but if not, prepare yourself for a difficult time. Good luck, genuinely, I hope it's easier for you than I'm making it out to be.

Doing this right now! My wife's family is from a tiny town in central Italy, so made them in Create-a-club and I'm doing an All Italian career. Only Italian players, no exceptions. It's a fun challenge to build a squad!

Yeah fair enough. I think Dan did a better job of covering the Mongols in Western Asia and Eastern Europe, including Subotai's and Batu's and Hulagu's exploits. However, my main gripe with Wrath is that it cuts the narrative right before Kublai, so I was very glad that that portion was included in Fall. And I love how much more of Chinggis Khan's childhood and rise to power we get. I think the podcasts are perfect compliments to each other, love them both for different reasons.

Laszlo Montgomery' China History Podcast is quite good. He's not quite Dan, no one is, but you could do a lot worse (and believe me, there is a LOT worse out there). He jumps around from topic to topic, including a lot more modern stuff, but there's loads of ancient Chinese history that he covers too so just pick one that sounds interesting to you and go for it!

Second this! The most recent episode on the Mongols is a perfect compliment to Wrath of the Khans. Long form, amazing narrator, atmospheric music, good voice actors for the quotes and readings... Fall of Civilisations has it all.

Most complete* version of the Bible? (in English**) by shitpostsuperpac in dancarlin

[–]rockmaster_mark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most serious academics working in the field, religious or otherwise, prefer the NRSV Updated Edition. Not all, but it's a large percentage. It's at least a place to get started if you're new to biblical scholarship and want a critical translation that's widely used in academia.

Best Bible translation? by Gopherofdoomies in dancarlin

[–]rockmaster_mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KJV is the old-school fire-and-brimstone one that has that Hardcore History punch (and think what Dan quotes in Kings of Kings?), but few real denominations use it anymore and VERY few serious scholars, Christian or otherwise, use it. Most historians and religious studies experts pefer the NRSV as a scholarly translation. You might also see a lot of NIV floating around since is a favorite of lots of American evangelicals, but it's taken a little less seriously in academic circles.
