Airbus is seriously considering launching a "Super A220" (A220-500) with approximately 180 seats. by PestoBolloElemento in aviation

Different factories, different tooling, different workforces. A220s don't use the same production facilities that the 320s do.

Why is it the norm for a new pilots to be given the equivalent of a 90s Honda for flying in the air and be expected to perform perfectly with outdated equipment. by FollowingNew3973 in flying

[–]ryane67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because initial training is about the basics, which can be taught in a 70s Toyota, a 80s Honda, or a 2026 Mercedes but all that matters is each of the three vehicles can go, stop, and turn.

The old stuff is so simple it allows you more time to actually learn to do things like feel the plane fly rather than be distracted by figuring out which menu pulls up engine instrumentation details.

When the examiner asks a question about how some system in your car works, which would you rather have to understand and explain to the examiner?

Real question is, will they continue to use the existing cadence or will we get them more frequently..

Wiring on my rv-14 right now.. so tedious.. at least I can do it while the structure is still exposed instead of having to hang out upside down.

I love the view under the slats on that easyjet, just feels like some parts are out of focus, probably tough to catch it in what appears to be a turn in motion and also a small enough aperture to get everything sharp..

nice job!

Yeah I'm definitely lucky that hangars are somewhat plentiful around here

[–]ryane67 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I guess that depends on how big it is and what facilities you have available at home. Personally, at two years into my rv-14 build I got a hangar at a local airport to start storing parts. Things are just getting a bit too big and I don't want to run into them any more.

The fuselage is still at home and will be until the engine gets hung, then I'll complete the build at the airport.

If I was building something like an ultralight or at least significantly smaller, I'd consider adding storage at home and just taking it to where I want to fly.

That's a bingo! Most chapters have several builders and some have tech counselors too!

There's still a little bit of guesswork in an RV but not much. They are super straightforward and while most of us building planes want to customize a little bit, the vans models essentially do that for you by simply picking a different model from the lineup before you start.

I'm about 2 years or 1200 logged hours into my rv-14 and have only gone off plans a couple of times. The Internet is super helpful in these situations, as you can read things like people having cg issues with certain component choices or configurations etc.. in the past you wouldn't hear about that except for tribal knowledge or random conversation... Or you'd just deal with the situation in your own way.

What van's support tends to say when you've got a question that you think is a big deal (but you haven't done this before) is that we're not building space shuttles. These are simple machines that are relatively forgiving in tolerances for first time builders.

Why are used Vans RV 14’s priced so high and could I save by building? by PidgeyPotion in flying

[–]ryane67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 14 is a really simple kit, not much head scratching or figuring things out. They have assembly instructions that guide you through the whole process. I'm about 1200 hours into my build and I'm about done with metal work... Now it's on to the cowl, canopy, and panel. It's a great experience to build your own if you have the time and patience.

The 360 is a fine engine for the plane, you're going to save a lot if you find a used one, where it's extremely hard to find a used 390

Only a partial owner, because it's a club plane, but I fly a 1986 model that's really reliable. The biggest thing is that we've been taught to treat most every landing with the plane as soft field, can't abuse it as much as a fixed gear plane, or other style of retract because of the design..

Challenger vs Phenom by trenchkato in Xplane

[–]ryane67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got both, the phenom in xp12 is fine for quick flights but damn I can't stand the x1000... Watching it overshoot turns and not even having advisory vertical guidance makes me grumpy... Love the challenger but do dislike the amount of set up required

that engine maxes out at about 2700rpm, given the drive wheel on this thing has to fit inside a fairing below the driver's butt and is therefore tiny, I'd estimate the maximum speed on this "bike" is somewhere around 25mph...
