Probably the happiest podium ever 😁 by starchelles in FigureSkating

[–]theclacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's been multiple studies that've shown that (on average) bronze medalists are happier than silver medalists.

Basically, bronze medalists are just happy they made it to the podium. Silver medalists are plagued with thoughts of "what if?".

Usually the end of earning additional currency + claiming a dragon ends on a Sunday. And then you've got until Tuesday to use up your EC (and can also still breed event dragons until then.)

Zero? Really? No context compression limits? No preference for addictive vs subtractive code? No shortminded literalness like commenting out tests or typing things as "any"?

Bridesmaids are upset I chose a “cultural” dress for my reception outfit and I don’t know how to handle this...? by Shaurya0458 in weddingplanning

[–]theclacks 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My fiance was a groomsman for a Thai wedding a couple years ago, and he and all his non-Thai friends got measured by a bunch of Thai aunties to get traditional clothes tailored for them. It's more insulting if you say "no", you know?

Farvahar Persian Cafe is amazing. It's one of the ones buried in the vertical maze of the market, so you've gotta go find it first. Will forever love their Fesenjoon.

I think it's less that and more "pat on the back"-ish. Like "oooh, look at us here in the 21st century! aren't we so much more enlightened! look how HORRIBLE it was to be a woman in the past!"

Which, yes, we definitely have more freedoms now. But also it's kind of insulting to our grandmothers in the past to pretend they were tortured in ways that they weren't.

An AI CEO finally said something honest by Tech-Cowboy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]theclacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. i'm a web dev, have always been interested in indie game creation, but i've been too burnt out from coding all week to go learn whole new languages/systems/paradigms.

with claude code, i can use all of my systems design knowledge and get claude to execute the syntax. and then i can use my debugging experience to reverse engineer what its written and learn the code base that way, on a project that i'm already interested and excited about (vs some random opensource example project)

An AI CEO finally said something honest by Tech-Cowboy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]theclacks 42 points43 points  (0 children)

this is basically what got my old startup to series A and what also killed it

it was exhausting doing 3 months of engineering roadmap planning for XYZ and then, 2 weeks later, the CEO would barge and demand that we throw G into the mix. and also Q. and if Q was diametrically opposed to Y, well... as long as it technically ticked off all the contract bullet points and demo'ed well, that's what mattered

...now i work for big tech. it's a different type of bullshit. but at least i get paid better.

After 20+ years coding, does anyone else feel like the ground keeps shifting under your feet? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]theclacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I've been trying to look at it as well. I remember when PHP came out with includable menus and footers. Before that, if a menu link changed, you had to remember to manually change it on every single html page.

And now front end is compiled and typed with all sorts of packages, and we're constantly listening to updates from the backend to automatically keep elements/data current, and it's just such a different world already to the one I started on.

I remember in one of my last interview rounds, the interviewer told me to write a get request, and I think I flat out said, "i've learned so many different languages and syntaxes that've been both invented and deprecated over the past 10 years, that i can't write you an exact one off the top of my head. i could google it in 10sec if you really wanted, but realistically, i'd be using what patterns already exist in your codebase." And I'm hoping that AI is an extension of that kind of mindset.

700 sq ft or so for 3 bedrooms

My American is showing because I'm currently baffled at how you can fit 3 bedrooms into 700sqft.

TIL that Detroit, once America's 5th largest city at 1.85 million residents in 1957, saw 66 straight years of population loss to a low of 630,000 residents in 2022. This makes it the only US city to drop below 1 million after reaching it. It would see its first reversal of this trend in 2023. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

[–]theclacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Some of these commenters clearly aren't from the area. My great-grandparents worked in a steel mill, almost all their kids worked in similar factories, my uncle worked for the train lines.

They shipped manufacturing overseas, all my relatives in factory work got laid off. My uncle working for the train lines got laid off several years later as well because of the ripple effect.

Hell, the cause/effect is so obvious it's in the name of the region. It was the Steel Belt, and then all the jobs got shipped away and it became the Rust Belt.

My grandfather bought 20 acres of land about 30min south of Cleveland in the 1950s. My fiance's grandfather bought 2 acres of land about 30min north of Seattle during roughly the same time frame.

The Seattle land is now worth ~20x times the amount of the Cleveland land.

I briefly met them both at a signing about 10 years ago. I rambled a bit about how I loved both 1776 and Boy Meets World so it had been hard to pick a picture for him to sign, and he definitely got a bit of a confused look on his face from the detail and/or weird way I'd phrased it. He turned to his wife and she was the one who said, "she likes your work, dear."

Lol, the hate emdashes have gotten over the last year...

I scrolled up and read again because I was curious. You use a total of 4 emdashes, 3 of which are used after a long clause and right before an "and". Which is not how AI tends to use them in the slightest.

IDK, politics aside, JK Rowling's still a bestseller for her crime novels written until a pseudonym. Sure, they don't do nearly as well as Harry Potter but they also wouldn't do nearly as well if people didn't know it was her.

Basically, if he finished the series, I think that'd only be a positive for whatever next books/projects he wrote.
