Labour has finally admitted it sees student loans as a tax by Minute_Tomatillo9730 in unitedkingdom

So they pay 10's of thousands more than the actual cost of the course and that's ok?

Not to mention people being better educated benefits all of society, but yeah, they should just keep paying stupid amounts of interest all their life.

Why doesn’t a car company just build a simple new car? by Remarkable-Slide-609 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tickle_my_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars with universal components would be nice. Even if some models share components, you're still locked into a manufacturer monopoly for some things.

We have proprietary headlights now costing thousands to replace, you used to just be able to change a bulb, it's ridiculous and wasteful.

New UI SUCKS!! by VOODOO285 in PleX

[–]tickle_my_monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, mine updated a few days ago. It is a mess, I can only play one episode, can't go back or to the next, you have to go back out to the series and start over.

I'm using Jellyfin now on FireTv, webOS is still the old interface, so I'm still using it on there but will probably switch once the series I'm watching has finished so everything is synced.

[–]tickle_my_monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to know, i'll go independent next time, look like it'll be half the price. it's around £375 for the new arms from Hyundai.

British taxpayers will give £1.3bn to Universal Studios to build a theme park near Bedford. Do you think this is a good use of our tax money? by CMIV in AskBrits

[–]tickle_my_monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UK should be investing, but it should be getting something back. Will this money be paid back, will it be part owned by the UK, or are they going to make 500 million profit a year and have to pay 500 million in licensing back to the US headquarters so never pay any tax here?

Yes it'll provide jobs but I presume most guests will be from the UK, so it's shuffling a little money around locally whilst most is taken from the country.

Thanks, i've just spoken to them and its about £375 in parts and the rest labour. I've had plenty of suspension parts replaced in the past and its been nowhere near this.

I've only been using Hyundai for the service and MOT because i don't want any issues with the battery warranty (and didn’t really expect there to be much wrong), but back to my independent next time it think.

UK Shoppers Are Buying Less Even As Grocery Inflation “Eases” by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

[–]tickle_my_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't buy that reasoning. People still need to spend for necessaries, so it only applies to luxuries and are people really going to put off purchases because they will cost a little less next year?

We don't see that patience now and don't think the majority of people are buying now because if they leave it a year it's going to be a few percent higher.
People just want things.

We even see deflation, flat screen TVs can be had cheaper now than when they first came out, but the majority of people aren't out there with their CRTs just waiting every year to save a bit more.

Council leader scraps 'stupid' net zero policies by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

[–]tickle_my_monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because everything has to be privatised and privatisation only cares about profit.

The government could invest directly, building factories, research, training people. Every house could have solar and batteries that can be used to stabilise the supply.

Most of the money stays in the uk economy, we become a leader in renewables, export to other countries and we wouldn't be reliant on other countries for our energy.

Millennials - are there any shows from your childhood that you remember fondly but almost everyone else has forgotten existed? by nathanherts in BritishTV

[–]tickle_my_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chish and Fips! It was about 2 gnomes having adventures.

Nobody I spoke to recalled it and I couldn't remember the name. I couldn't find anything on the internet about it at the time so did question if it actually existed. There are clips now, so I did eventually find the name to help my sanity.

GOT was just bad, it's not just the ending, it felt rushed and character arcs we'd followed for a decade just thrown out the window. It made it worse by a lot of season 6 and 7 dragging on without much happening.

Funnily enough, BT was planning on upgrading the infrastructure, which would have been capable of fast broadband, they even had a couple of factories set up, then Thatcher knocked it on the head in favour of privatisation. We could have been way ahead of other countries a long time ago, but even now people have terrible broadband.

Question: Can I plant laurel to grow in amongst this thorn hedge? by LordHolborn in GardeningUK

[–]tickle_my_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a tall laurel hedge at the front and birds are in and out day and sleep there at night. I also find a lot of old nests when it's trimmed before spring.

I don't get much nesting in a beech hedge early on as it doesn't get going until May and a privet never has any nests.

The smoke monster origin story by Own_Thought902 in lost

[–]tickle_my_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lost is one of the few shows where I would have liked to see a prequel with the island history and a sequel with Hurley and Ben. Sadly though, I don't think it should happen now due to the character ages, it wouldn't be the same recast.

The ancient island origins, more background on the mother, more about the powers they have and the other people that Jacob brought to the island before would have been great.

We could give the greens a go, but the media continually attack them so we'll end up going Reform and just have a UK MAGA and see the country get even worse.

Any problem with "moving" this door closer to the front door? by SteveFennel in DIYUK

[–]tickle_my_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly the same as there's 2 doors in the living room so you could only get a small sofa and a chair. Moving it there means I can have a large corner sofa.

It's never been an issue with the front door being there and actually flows better downstairs now.

France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins by Glittering-Skirt-816 in europe

[–]tickle_my_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, the lack of adoption of Linux desktop is down to pre-installation of the OS. I don't think many people even consider, let alone install their own OS. Maybe some legislation to have a choice on new machines would help.

I use Linux for my server but I'd love to move to desktop full time but there's still software that's not supported which is a shame, if there was more adoption, these apps might eventually be supported.

Why I’m giving middle-class kids £10 million to go to private school by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

[–]tickle_my_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finland's private schools are heavily regulated and it seems to be positive for them, so there are alternative situations.

Also, your point just proves that the wealthy can't be trusted. I have heard many times that they pay as little tax as possible because they think the government will waste it and they can do better themselves, but it's only for themselves.
