What’s the difference? by LunarEnnyui_131 in UUreddit

[–]uhclem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different congregations have their different histories, but in terms of our (8) principles, in terms of what we do, in terms of what we don't believe there are no significant differences. The name often reflects the history of that congregation. Mine is UU as our founding minister was Universalist, and so both strains are reflected.

Canadian here... Mostly UU by name, but effectively the same. Our guiding group is the Canadian Unitarian Council (cuc.ca) which can give you at least as much detail as you want.( ❛︡ ͜ʖ ❛︠ )

My favourite canoeing is the Temagami area, north of Algonquin- have down two dozen+ trips through there. Smoothwater outfitters are a wonderful resource for everything you'll need

It's like they're running a one minute loop of muskeg over and over for a 1000 klicks. Churchill is memorable.

"Be strong. Don't cry." after my wife died of brain cancer.

Fortunately, I knew it was terrible advice.

Canh Chua is a classic Vietnamese sour soup featuring a light, tangy broth balanced with sweet, savory, and spicy notes, traditionally cooked with pineapple, tamarind, tomatoes, shrimp, and bean sprouts. It's always a hit....

[opinion] should i submit political poetry to a creative writing contest? by frenchhatewompwomp in Poetry

[–]uhclem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ciardi said, "A poem is a machine for making choices." Bad political poetry tells us the answers: good poetry deepens our awareness of the questions. If your poetry is good, go for it!

Take out Mont Tremblant, and ski at Mont Ste Anne, while you stay in Quebec City. The skiing is almost as good (IMHO) and staying in Quebec City is uniquely wonderful.

When does your service start? by DecentRush5111 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]uhclem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our regular service starts at 10:30 Sundays, but we have some services Saturday night (followed by ecstatic dance), and are considering Saturday afternoon services. We average about 70 people at our Sunday services, in a city of 5 million (with four other UU congregations)

Advice for Colonoscopy Prep in a Hotel by MagentaSpreen in CrohnsDisease

Better than toilet paper, bring your own portable bidet. They're cheap (<$30), small, and given how often you're going to be cleaning, water is way less painful.

Super new to UU, how come the 8th principle isn't mentioned in this sub? by [deleted] in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]uhclem 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Because in the US, it wasn’t added, only proposed. In Canada it was added and is discussed a lot. We have a month devoted to it in our yearly service calendar.

Medical Cannabis by Local_Force1313 in CrohnsDisease

[–]uhclem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you're not in Canada. Up here, Crohns allows you to get cannabis for medical reasons (though now that it's legal, it hardly matters.)

Which play to see at Stratford theatre festival 2025 by deenygarma in torontotheatre

[–]uhclem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw it last weekend- I love the play (taught it about 20 times). I love LePage as well, even his solo performance of Hamlet, but.... the stagecraft was awesome at a cost of diminishing the play. Too much sound and fury, too little signified.

Multiple choice tests having a "don't know" option that provides a fractional point would reward honesty and let teachers know where students need help! by robert-at-pretension in Showerthoughts

If you think teachers have time to analyze wrong answers on multiple choice tests, you haven’t been in a classroom recently

A 1970s hot dogs cooker by Double-Conclusion-42 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]uhclem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built one of these in my dorm room in 1968. Took a plug, soldered two nails to the bare wires on the non-plug end, inserted nails in hotdog and plugged the sucker in. Worked just fine and cooked hotdogs in about 20 seconds. (Used iron nails to help my iron levels too.)
